Your free trial or monthly subscription gives you access to Apple TV shows. The Apple TV app also aggregates content from other providers like Hulu, Netflix, and Showtime. But these providers may also require subscriptions.

The Apple TV app has a library tab with a list of all your TV shows and movies. But it only lists Apple purchases. Amazon Prime or YouTube purchases will not show up in your library. They may show up in an Apple TV App search, as many movies are available through the iTunes store. But you will be asked to purchase it again.

Additionally, the Apple TV app offers buttons that will take you directly to Amazon Prime, YouTube, Disney Plus, or other providers. You add these apps to your Apple TV app’s home screen, or you can go to them directly from your Home button.

Can I Get Apple TV App on Older Samsung TVs?

Apple has become famous (or notorious) for its “walled garden” approach. They design their operating systems and apps for carefully selected hardware. This approach provides better security against hacking and malware and allows for a consistent user experience. But it also leaves many device owners locked outside the garden.

Unfortunately, the Apple TV app is only available on certain Samsung TVs. According to Apple, the Apple TV app only supports the following Samsung TVs:

  • Samsung UHD 8, 7, 6 Series (2018, 2019, 2020)
  • Samsung FHD/HD 5,4 Series (2018, 2019, 2020)
  • Samsung The Frame Series (2018, 2019, 2020)
  • Samsung QLED 4K Q9, Q8, Q7, Qx Series (2018, 2019, 2020)
  • Samsung QLED 8K Q9, Q8 Series (2019, 2020)
  • Samsung Serif Series (2019, 2020)
  • Samsung the Sero Series (2019, 2020)

If you have an older Samsung model, you’re out of luck. Apple TV will not load on any Samsung TV that is not on Apple’s list of approved models. If you can’t find the Apple TV app on your Smarthub’s “Apps” panel, you cannot download it to your smart TV.

Apple TV Box

Samsung Smart TVs save owners the tangled cords and extra hassle of set-top boxes. But even if your Samsung TV can’t use the Apple TV app, it can still connect to an Apple TV-capable source.

If you want to watch your Apple TV programs in 4K with HDR, you will need an HDMI cable that is capable of handling the required bandwidth. This Zeskit Maya Ultra High-Speed HDMI Cable will give your Apple TV box and your Samsung TV the connection they need for the best possible picture.

Alas, while your Samsung TV has HDR (High Dynamic Range) capability, it does not have Dolby Vision. Some TV manufacturers have included Dolby’s proprietary technology in their higher-end models. Samsung remains committed to the royalty-free HDR10+ standard.

HDR10+ and Dolby Vision offer slightly better color saturation and more balanced brightness. But your Apple TV box will still provide a standard HDR10 signal to your Samsung TV or an SDR (Standard Dynamic Range) signal for older Samsung TVs, which do not support the original HDR10 protocols defined in 2015.

Playstation or Xbox

If you use your Samsung TV for gaming, you may already own an Apple TV app-capable device! The following gaming consoles can run the Apple TV app:

  • Xbox One X
  • Xbox One S
  • Xbox Series X
  • Xbox Series S
  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 5

The Xbox Series X and Series S and the PlayStation 5 ship with the Apple TV app already installed. If you are using an Xbox One X or One S or a PlayStation 4, you can download the Apple TV app from your console’s app store.
