Can You Put a Vanity On An Uneven Wall? (How To)

A vanity provides cabinets you can use for storage that also has a sink, so you can make the most of the bathroom area you have. Problems arise with putting a vanity on an uneven wall, but following the right steps for installation will help you correct most issues.

You can put a vanity on an uneven wall, but you need to fill in spaces to avoid bowing of material. To do this, make sure you fill in any gaps where unevenness already occurs.

You also can fill in spaces that are already uneven or bowing with caulk or joining compound. This requires measurements for not only the vanity top and cabinet placement but also for when you add a backsplash to conceal the wall caps.

Should You Put Vanity On An Uneven Wall?

Don’t think of whether or not you “should” put a vanity on an uneven wall. You may not have a choice to work with the walls you have, even if they’re not as level as they used to be when new.

You can put a vanity on an uneven wall if you have the right tools and supplies handy to correct that unevenness. The tools you use will prepare you for placement. Then, you’ll complete the final installation steps.

Just because you can put a vanity on an uneven wall, that doesn’t always mean you should, however. It’s wise to assess your bathroom wall condition before starting any do-it-yourself cabinet project. If you’re not sure you can add a vanity on an uneven wall, call a professional for an inspection.

What Tools Do You Need To Put Vanity On An Uneven Wall?

Tools you use for putting a vanity on an uneven wall depend on your method. Kenneth Crawford provides a list of tools you may need. However, your situation may call for a different technique.

Keep in mind that these instructions provide you with only a general idea of what you can do. It’s up to you to make sure you understand specifics, which may require more research and training. It may take a bit of pondering before you have determined the tools and equipment will produce the desired result in your case.

Some tools required for putting a vanity on an uneven wall include masking tape, a tape measure and a compass. You also will need a pencil, 100-grit sandpaper and sanding tool, construction adhesive and a caulk gun. Alternative methods may not require a compass though.

You’ll still need to use the measuring tools, however. In this case, you’d use backsplash pieces to fill in the space between the vanity and the wall. Otherwise, you’d fill in the space with caulk, which requires a caulk gun.

An additional option would be to fill in the area with a joint compound, which will call for a trough (mud pan), a putty knife and a taping knife. It’s considered a fill-in option that provides better coverage and “looks better” than caulking overall.

Before installing your vanity on an uneven wall, you need to establish its exact placement. This requires marking off the position where the vanity would go. It also determines where the backsplash should go.

Use masking tape to cover the edges of your vanity all around its top edges. This will help you define where you would make your mark using the pencil. It also prepares your vanity for placement without destroying its surface.

If your vanity top is currently separated from your vanity cabinet, measure the front cabinet frame edges to the front. Do this on both sides and make sure you match up the distances on both sides as much as possible.

You’ll need to mark off the sections that you measured. This will show you how much of your vanity top you may need to trim to line it up with the wall. Using a compass will help with this, or you could alternatively use a square or ruler.

The measurements you take will also prepare you for adding a backsplash, which improves the vanity’s appearance. It’s the cap behind that you will have to fill after installing the vanity on an uneven wall.

One of the most complicated ways involves the use of the compass. You will want to review the instructions for that before starting. It provides you precise measurements for vanity tops. The caulking and joint compound method uses similar steps.

The next two instruction variations involve the caulking or joint compound fill-in methods. They take place after you’ve chosen the backsplash you would place on your vanity top. The compass measurement before placing the backlash is another topic you’ll have to explore before completing these steps.

First, insert the caulk tube into the gun. (Unless you’re using the joint compound method.) Then, squirt behind the backsplash until you have filled the entire gap and cannot add anymore caulk. Smooth off the top edge and let it dry.

When using the joint compound mixture, you can apply that joint compound before you even add the backsplash. Then, cover the joint compound with the backsplash before it dries.

To apply the joint compound, scoop up some of the substance you added to the “mud pan” (trough). Use the large taping knife, which has a wide, flat spreading surface, to distribute the compound over the area where you would place the backsplash.

When you think you added about the right amount of compound, smooth it out. Then, add the backsplash over it. You may need to add more joint compound, but you can wait until the compound you just applied dries.
