It is feasible to put marble tiles on drywall, but does that mean it’s okay to do this? Not all ideas are good ideas, after all. Fortunately, you don’t have to worry about that with marble tiles, and there shouldn’t be any issues if you install marble tiles on drywall.

It is important that you ensure the drywall surface is completely level before you place the tiles. If there is no workaround and you have to work on an uneven surface (which is probably unlikely), start at the lower end to ensure the corners match up perfectly.

It can be tempting to just start installing your beautiful marble tiles, but it’s important to take things step-by-step and prepare for the project so you don’t make avoidable mistakes.

Before you install marble tiles on drywall, you need to mix and apply grout to the wall. The mixture should be applied with a rubber paddle, and while mixing, you will only need small amounts of water.

Once you’ve adequately prepared for the tile installation, you can get started on making your home as lovely as you imagined when you bought your marble tiles.

Installing marble tiles on drywall is, fortunately, not a very complicated task. There isn’t a lot of pre-planning that needs to be done, and the preparations are also easy to take care of.

To install marble tiles on drywall, you will have to clean the wall and mix the thinset that will help the tiles to stick to the wall. Make sure you have the right number of tiles and that they’re all clean and ready to be placed.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how you should install marble tiles on your drywall:

Step One

Add water to the powdered thinset by adding two cups of water to half a bucket of the powder. As you mix, you will need to add more water until you get a finished mix that is runny enough to stick to the tiles but won’t cause the tiles to fall off the wall.

The thinset will dry out if left to sit for ten minutes or more, so you can determine if you need more water. If you think it is getting too dry, you can add a small amount of water.

Ensure the wall is level or you will find that the corners of your tiles don’t match up. For the best results, start at the lower end so you can ensure all tiles fit. You may need to cut the tiles in the first row, but that’s better than ending up with an ugly gap.

Spread the thinset evenly on the wall and lay the tiles. Push them firmly to make sure they’re sticking to the wall properly.

Step Two

The next step is preparing the tiles for grout. You will have to wait for the tiles to get settled, and this can take between half a day and 24 hours. Once the time has elapsed, you need to clean out any thinset that made its way into the gaps between the tiles. A razor blade should be able to clean out the thinset.

Make sure there is no debris between the tiles.

Step Three

You should mix the grout and ensure that it is runny enough to fill the gaps between your marble tiles but also dry enough to stay there. You will only need a little bit of water, much less than you needed for the thinset mixture.

Use a rubber paddle to spread the grout on the tiles and make sure you get the grout into the gaps. Remove the grout from the surface of the tiles while you work so that your cleanup is easier once you’re completely done.

Spread the grout diagonally on the spaces so that you don’t accidentally remove some of it with the paddle.

You should spread only a small amount at a time, enough grout for about six tiles. This may take longer but ensures a cleaner job. Use a sponge to wipe the grout off the surface of the tiles, but be sure not to press too hard. This can result in the grout becoming uneven, leading to uneven tiles.

Leave the grout to settle, this should take only a few hours, and use a clean sponge or towel to gently wipe the grout film from the tiles’ surfaces.

Step Four

Now it’s time to seal your tiles, and you can use whatever tile sealer you prefer. You will have to spray them on with a spray bottle, and most sealers come with a spray bottle supplied.

Spray the sealer and wipe it with a sponge to spread it around. Make sure you cover the entire area. Leave the sealer for a few minutes and wipe off the excess product. That is all you have to do.
