Dyson Cordless Vacuum Not Working

When it is time to vacuum, you do not want anything to prolong the chore. You want to get it done quickly so you can get back to more enjoyable activities. A good day can quickly be ruined when you reach for your Dyson cordless vacuum and discover it is not working.

If your Dyson cordless vacuum is not working, make sure the vacuum is properly placed on the charging station and is charging. Check the hose, filter, and dust bin for blockages. Thoroughly clean the filter and let it completely dry before using the vacuum.

Oftentimes the solution to why the Dyson cordless vacuum is not working is a simple one. This article will help you troubleshoot some reasons why your vacuum is not working properly and what the solution is.

Dyson Cordless Vacuum Display Not Working

Has the LCD screen on your Dyson cordless vacuum stopped working? The vacuum will still work but you will not be able to adjust the settings, vacuum modes, or be notified of certain alerts such as changing the filter or other maintenance items.

If the Dyson cordless vacuum display is not working, there could be a defect within the LCD screen itself or the hardware. This is especially true if the vacuum has been dropped. Before calling a Dyson representative, make sure the vacuum is receiving a full charge on the charging station.

Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done when the LCD screen does not work. The problem could lie within the screen itself or another hardware issue. You will need to contact a local Dyson seller to see about a repair or replacement option.

Dyson Cordless Vacuum Losing Suction

Dyson vacuums are known for their great suction ability. What can you do if your vacuum is losing suction?

If your Dyson cordless vacuum is losing suction, make sure nothing is preventing the vacuum from receiving sufficient airflow. Obstructions in the brush, hose, filter, even inside the dust bin can greatly reduce airflow. Replacing the filter before it is completely dry will also restrict airflow.

Another reason why your Dyson cordless vacuum is losing suction could be due to an air leak.

Air Leak

We don’t often think of air leaks when we think of our vacuum but Dyson vacuums are unique. The Dyson vacuum has air-tight seals all around the connecting parts. These seals are what ensure good suction.

If one of the seals is cracked or worn out, air will leak out and the suction will be compromised. Instead of sucking in dirt and debris, you will be sucking in air at the weak seal joint.

You can test the seals by turning the vacuum on and feeling all around each seal for any air. If you discover that a seal is compromised, you can contact your Dyson seller for a replacement kit.

Dyson Cordless Vacuum Intermittent Suction

When you use your vacuum, you expect a steady suction. What does it mean when the suction is intermittent?

If your Dyson cordless vacuum has intermittent suction, adjust the mode of suction on the LCD display panel. More suction and airflow are required if you are vacuuming a carpet or rug with thick fibers. Adjust the setting to MAX mode when cleaning tougher messes.

Two other possibilities for intermittent suction are an overloaded dust bin and a battery that is not fully charged.

Dust Bin

When the dust bin gets full, suction will be intermittent or stop altogether. Dirt, dust, debris, food, all of these things will clog the hose, affecting the suction of the vacuum hose and the vacuum. It is important to empty the dustbin when the contents reach the first MAX line.

MAX Mode

Using the MAX mode setting is great for emergency use but when it is used often, the battery will be quickly drained. You will experience intermittent suction before the vacuum loses power altogether.

Dyson Cordless Vacuum No Suction

Worse than intermittent suction is not having suction at all. It is impossible to use a vacuum if there is no suction. Thankfully, the solution is easy and quick.

If your Dyson cordless vacuum has no suction, make sure the vacuum battery has a full charge. Examine the vacuum for any signs of obstruction. Make sure the hose, filter, and dustbin are all securely connected.

If there is no suction, this means something is obstructing the airflow inside the vacuum. The first place to start troubleshooting this issue is to check for a blockage.

Check the vacuum hose for a blockage. Check the brush bar for hair or other debris that could cause the brush to stop working. Check the dust bin for any debris that could be blocking the opening for debris to enter.

A common mistake that creates blockages, is when the filter is not completely dry when it is placed back in the vacuum. Any remaining water in the filter obstructs airflow and also creates a blockage much quicker than if the filter were dry.

Dyson Cordless Vacuum Max Suction Not Working

Dyson vacuums come with a MAX setting to let you tackle the hardest of messes. What does it mean when MAX suction is not working?

If your Dyson cordless vacuum MAX suction is not working, make sure the battery is fully charged. Using the MAX requires more power and will quickly drain the battery. If the battery is not fully charged from previous use, there will not be enough power for MAX suction.

A common theme with any vacuum experiencing suction problems is to check for blockages. Dyson vacuum cleaners require constant airflow for sufficient suction. If there is a blockage in the hose, or if the filter or dust bin is full, the airflow will be restricted, causing suction to stop.

Depending on the model of Dyson cordless vacuum you have, the filter may be in a different location or you may have more than one filter. Some models have a pre and post-filter. Consult your User’s Manual to know where your Dyson cordless vacuum filters are located.

Dyson Cordless Vacuum Keeps Pulsing

Cleaning the floor using vacuum

You turn the vacuum on only to have it pulse on and off. Before you throw the vacuum away, here is a suggestion to try.

If your Dyson cordless vacuum keeps pulsing, there could be a clog obstructing airflow. Dyson vacuums have a safety feature that will momentarily shut the vacuum off if there is an obstruction. This is to prevent the vacuum from overheating.

Pulsing can also happen if there is a clog. Inside the dust bin is a flap that allows dirt and debris to enter but not escape. If the flap is clogged or blocked, nothing can come into the bin.

The vacuum will shut off and on to prevent the motor from overheating while the vacuum is in use. You will need to remove the hose from where it connects to the dust bin and clean everything, including the dust bin.

When cleaning everything, also clean the vents on the dust bin canister. These openings are crucial to good airflow.

The tube that connects to the motor may also have a blockage. It is best to remove all the parts of the vacuum and give it a good cleaning before using it again. Most of the time the blockage is easy to remove and once everything is dry, the vacuum is ready to be used again.

If the vacuum continues to pulse while in use, especially when on MAX mode, the issue is with the battery. Consult your User’s Manual to identify the correct battery you need.

Dyson Cordless Vacuum Won’t Open

Cleaning the floor using vacuum

Dyson vacuum cleaners are extremely user-friendly. The different components of the vacuum are simple in design and have minimal instructions. That being said, what do you do when you are not able to open the dust bin?

There are several small red clips that hold the bin in place. Because the power button for the vacuum is a trigger, the release buttons for the bin require two hands. This is smart because you don’t want to accidentally release the bin when you are trying to vacuum.

These little clips can sometimes present a problem if the bin gets too full. Too much debris in the bin can cause these tabs to become blocked. If an object gets under the tab, you will not be able to easily open the bin.

Another possibility is that the seal holding the bin in place is not the correct size. In this case, it will require some firm but gentle elbow grease to release the bin. Continue applying pressure to the clip until the bin releases. It is best to contact your Dyson seller for a replacement so you don’t risk damaging the vacuum each time you clean the bin.

If your Dyson cordless vacuum won’t open, apply more pressure to the red clip. The clip is meant to provide a secure seal so the bin will not be accidentally released while the vacuum is in use. If applying more pressure does not work, use a flat head screwdriver to pry the clip open.
