Dyson Stick Vacuum Not Working

When it is time to vacuum, whether because it’s cleaning day or you have an emergency mess to clean up, you expect your Dyson vacuum to work. What does it mean when your Dyson stick vacuum is not working?

If your Dyson stick vacuum is not working, make sure the vacuum is correctly positioned on the charging station, that the power cord is not damaged and is securely inserted to a working outlet, and also that the wand, hose, brush, and filter are all free of obstructions.

Dyson vacuums are not complicated machines. They are designed to be lightweight and user-friendly. If your Dyson stick vacuum is not working correctly, here are some suggestions to troubleshoot the issue you are having.

Dyson Stick Vacuum Brush Not Spinning

Cleaning the floor using Vacuum

The brush head attachment makes cleaning larger areas much easier. Here is what it means when the brush is not spinning.

If your Dyson vacuum brush is not spinning, make sure you are using the vacuum correctly. The floor setting may need to be adjusted to a higher setting. Also, make sure the vacuum is not being used in an upright position. This position will signal for the motor to shut off.

Another common reason why the brush will not spin is if the brush has become clogged with hair or other long fibers. When hair is picked up by the brush bar, it clumps together and forms knots that weave through the brush bristles.

These knots eventually restrict the brush so much that it will not be able to spin. If you try to keep using the vacuum even though the brush bar is not working, you risk damaging the motor belt.

Unlocked

Did you recently clean the brush bar? The brush head can be removed for easy cleaning, however, if the brush head is not locked into position, the motor will not be signaled to engage and the brush bar will not spin.

Drive Belt

Some models of Dyson stick vacuums have a drive belt that is connected to the brush bar. This belt is made of rubber so, overtime, it can become brittle and break or become stretched and start slipping.

You can replace the belt yourself. Consult your User’s Manual to identify which type of belt your specific model of Dyson vacuum requires.

Dyson Stick Vacuum Battery Not Charging

Vacuuming is a chore many of us view as just that – a chore. So when it’s time to vacuum, you don’t want to discover that the battery has no charge.

If your Dyson vacuum battery is not charging, make sure the vacuum is correctly positioned on the charging station and that the power cord is securely inserted into the power source. Check the power source for sufficient power, and inspect the power cord and battery housing for any signs of damage.

In rare cases, the reason why a Dyson vacuum battery will not charge is due to a defective battery. Dyson batteries are designed to last several years but if your battery is new or only a few months old, contact your Dyson seller to request a replacement.

Charging Station

Some models of Dyson vacuums come with a charging station that is meant to be mounted to the wall. If the power cord to the charging station becomes stretched, the power cord could become damaged overtime and the battery will not charge.

Dyson Stick Vacuum Not Turning On

Is your Dyson stick vacuum not turning on? Here are some reasons why this is happening.

If your Dyson stick vacuum is not turning on, inspect the power cord for any signs of wear and tear. If the cord has been stepped on, pulled and stretched, the fibers inside the cord could be damaged. Also inspect the cord for any signs of electrical damage such as burn marks.

A damaged power cord is a serious safety hazard. If you see any signs of damage, stop using the vacuum immediately. Unplug the power cord and put the vacuum in a location where it will not be used by anyone else. Contact your local Dyson to see about a replacement cord or vacuum.

Battery

Dyson batteries are encased in a plastic battery housing that is designed to protect the battery. If the housing is damaged, has cracks or dents, the battery is also damaged. You will need to contact our local Dyson seller to request a replacement battery.

Not Sealed

A safety feature on all Dyson vacuum cleaners is that if any parts are not correctly and securely installed, the vacuum will not turn on. If you recently cleaned your vacuum, recheck each piece you removed to clean and make sure it has been correctly reattached.

Dyson Stick Vacuum Blue Light Flashing

A solid blue light means the vacuum is ready for more powerful cleaning. So what does it mean when the blue light is flashing?

If your Dyson stick vacuum blue light is flashing, either the battery is getting low or it is not charging. Make sure the battery is correctly placed on the charging station and that the outlet is supplying sufficient power to the charger.

If the blue light continues to flash after the vacuum has been fully charged, the battery is not holding the charge and will need to be replaced. Contact your Dyson seller to request the appropriate replacement battery.

Dyson Stick Vacuum Blinking Red

Red lights are not usually a welcomed sight. Unfortunately, a blinking red light on your Dyson vacuum means the battery needs your immediate attention.

If your Dyson stick vacuum is blinking red, there is a problem with the battery. The flashing red light is an indicator that there is a problem with the voltage of the battery itself, resulting in the battery not charging. The battery will need to be replaced.

When the red light is flashing on each side of the battery pack, this means there is a voltage issue with one or all of the battery cells. These cells cannot be replaced individually. The entire battery will need to be replaced.

Dyson Stick Vacuum Keeps Going On and Off

Are you trying to vacuum but the vacuum keeps going on and off? Before you take your anger out on the vacuum, here is why this is happening.

If your Dyson stick vacuum keeps going on and off, the vacuum could be overheating. A safety feature of Dyson vacuums is that they will shut off if they start to overheat. The vacuum will overheat if there is restricted airflow or if the motor is overheating.

The most common reason for the vacuum to overheat is due to not cleaning the vacuum properly. It is important to disassemble the vacuum when cleaning it to make sure there is nothing obstructing the wand, hose, or filters.

If your Dyson stick vacuum is losing suction, clean the brush bar, removing anything that could be preventing suction and airflow in the wand and hose. Adjust the floor setting to a higher setting. Remove and thoroughly clean and dry the filters.

It is very important that the filter is removed and disassembled when cleaned. If your Dyson filter has a plastic insert, the insert must be removed and cleaned. Any debris left inside the filter will build and harden, restricting airflow.

One other very important fact to keep in mind is that the filter must be completely dry before returning it to the vacuum. If the filter is not completely dry, any dirt, dust, and debris that is sucked up will harden and clog the filter.

Dyson Stick Vacuum Making Noise

By nature, vacuums make noise, But if your Dyson is making unusual noises, here are some reasons why.

If your Dyson stick vacuum is making noise, make sure the attachments are correctly and securely attached, that the seals around each attachment are tight, and that nothing is blocking the airways in the vacuum.

You will also hear noise when the clutch of the vacuum becomes stuck. You may need to manually move the clutch to adjust the setting. If the clutch continues to stick, you will need to contact your Dyson seller about a replacement part.

Dyson Stick Vacuum Canister Stuck

Dyson vacuums are designed to make cleaning our homes easy. Cleaning the vacuum is also meant to be easy. So then why is the canister stuck?

If your Dyson stick vacuum canister is stuck, food or debris has become logged under the seal around the inside of the canister. If the seal is too small for the canister, the canister will not open easily and will require the use of a flathead screwdriver to pry open the canister.

When cleaning the canister, use a damp cloth to gently clean around the canister seal, removing any debris that may have become logged underneath.

If the canister seal is the issue, contact your Dyson seller for a replacement seal so you don’t risk damaging the bin each time you need to open it.

Dyson Stick Vacuum Clogged

It is crucial to clean each element of the vacuum in order for it to work properly. One of the foremost reasons for a Dyson to stop working correctly is when it becomes clogged.

If your Dyson stick vacuum clogged, remove any obstructions in the wand, hose, and brush attachment. Keep the dirt canister clean. Regularly wash and dry the filters. If the vacuum has overheated due to a clog, allow the vacuum time to cool and recharge before using again.
