How To Remove Paint From Aluminum Siding

Whether the paint was already on the aluminum when you purchased the house or you yourself accidently painted the aluminum siding, you don’t have to just deal with the paint. You can actually remove the pain from the aluminum siding.

There are several different ways for how to remove paint from aluminum siding, such as using Goof Off, vinegar, and baking soda. Methyl ethyl ketone can also be used for removing oil-based paint from aluminum siding.

Soak an old rag in Goof Off and then blot the paint for several seconds. The Goof Off will help to soften the paint. Then scrape the softened paint off the aluminum with a paint stick. Continue in this manner until all the paint has been removed.

Another option is to mix ¼ cup of vinegar or baking soda with 1 quart of water. Dip a scrub brush in the mixture and scrub the aluminum vigorously until the paint is removed. Make sure to rinse the aluminum clean with fresh water after removing the paint.

How To Remove Spray Paint From Aluminum Siding

Spray paint is the most common choice of paint for graffiti artists. So find unwanted art on your aluminum siding, there is a good chance that it is spray paint.

Rubbing alcohol works well to remove water-based spray paints, while acetone does the trick for oil-based spray paints. Simply dip a rag in either rubbing alcohol or acetone and rub the spray paint until it comes off the surface. Reapply the rubbing alcohol or acetone as needed.

Always wear protective clothing when working with any chemicals, and rinse the aluminum siding clean with water once all the paint has been removed.

If you’re still having trouble removing spray paint from aluminum siding, consider a pressure washer. Pressure washers can sometimes blast the spray paint off of aluminum surfaces. However, they are also known for damaging surfaces if not used properly. Because of this, you should use a PSI of between 2,000 and 4,000, and never above that. Using more than 4,000 PSI can damage the aluminum siding beyond repair. 

How To Remove Latex Paint From Aluminum Siding

Latex paint is a water-based paint that is used on a wide array of surfaces. Because it is water-based, it is much easier to remove from aluminum siding than other types of paints.

To remove latex paint from aluminum siding, simply rub the paint with a rag and some Goof Off. It may take several seconds and even a few minutes to remove all the paint. Additionally, you may need to keep applying Goof Off during the removal process.

Once the latex paint has been removed, spray the aluminum siding with water to remove the Goof Off residue and let the surface air dry.

Even though Goof Off is relatively safe, you should still wear rubber gloves when working with this chemical. This is merely a safety precaution that can help prevent skin irritation if you are sensitive to the ingredients in this product.

How To Remove Oil Based Paint From Aluminum Siding

Oil-based paint is a bit harder to remove than latex paint, but it’s not impossible. In fact, all you need to remove this stubborn paint is mineral spirits, a rag, and a brush. 

Dampen a cloth with mineral spirits and then rub the paint until it is soaked. Allow the mineral spirits to soak into the paint for several minutes before scrubbing the area with a soft-bristled brush. Continue applying mineral spirits and then scrubbing with the brush until the paint is gone.

Always wear protective gear, such as safety goggles and rubbing gloves, when working with chemicals like mineral spirits. Additionally, mineral spirits, or any cleaning chemical for that matter, should only be used in a well ventilated area.

How To Remove Acrylic Paint From Aluminum Siding

Acrylic paints are fast-drying paints often used in the art world. They are typically water-based, which makes for easier cleanup. However, these paints become water-resistant once dry, which makes removing them from a surface a tad bit difficult.

Scrub the acrylic paint with a rag dampened in ammonia. This can take several minutes and may require refreshing the rag with ammonia before all the acrylic paint is removed from the aluminum siding. Rinse the surface clean with water and then let the siding air dry.

Ammonia gives off strong fumes and should only be used in an open area with good ventilation. Additionally, never mix any other chemicals with ammonia as there is a potential for a toxic chemical reaction that could occur.

Additionally, as with any other cleaning chemical, always wear safety glasses and rubber gloves when working with ammonia. If you start to feel dizzy or lightheaded when using ammonia, immediately discontinue use and move to an area with fresh air. 

How To Remove Paint Stain From Aluminum Siding

Paint stains can be some of the most difficult things to remove from aluminum siding. After all, stains are made to soak into the surface and stay there. That doesn’t mean, however, that you just have to live with the stain.

Paint strippers will typically remove paint stain from aluminum siding. Keep in mind, however, that the paint stripper can also remove the paint and sheen from the siding as well. This means you may have to touch up the siding to make it match the rest of the aluminum siding.

Dip a rag in the paint stripper and rub the paint stain vigorously until it is no longer visible on the siding. Before using this method, however, don a pair of rubbing gloves, breathing mask, and safety glasses.
