Laptops are an important part of our daily lives and the inconvenience of one not turning on is matched only by the frustration of lengthy software updates.
If your HP laptop will not turn on, then the first thing to check is your battery. If the battery has reached the end of its life, then replacement is your only option. You can still use your laptop while attached to the charger, but that negates the benefits of using a laptop.
Problems can occur if you use the incorrect charger or charging cable.
Each battery requires a particular voltage to charge and trying to charge it with the wrong voltage will damage it.
If you must replace your battery, then your options are to buy an original (OEM) battery or a non-branded one. So long as you match the replacement battery with your original battery, using a cheaper non-original battery can save you some money.
You may find that your CMOS battery has worn out and needs replacement. You can usually diagnose this as the problem if you find that the laptop doesn’t retain its time and date settings.
If you have installed new components, you may have forgotten to connect the wiring. Open the case and check that the cables are all correctly attached. Don’t forget to check that your battery is properly connected.
HP Laptop Will Not Turn On Or Charge
It can be a frustrating experience if your laptop fails to turn on or charge.
When your HP laptop will not turn on or charge, unplug the power cable and hold the power button down for 15 seconds. Reconnect the charger cable and press the power button. If that fails to boot the laptop then you may need to unplug the battery and then hold the power button for 15 seconds.
After holding the power button down for 15 seconds, the power in the laptop will have dissipated. Reconnect the battery and try switching the laptop on.
If the charger is the problem, you may need to try charging your laptop with another charger to see if it works.
If the battery fails to charge, it may have worn out and needs replacement. To do that, you must open up the laptop and locate the battery. Then unplug the power cables and retaining screws.
Replace the battery and plug the cable back in.
If you are struggling to find a reason for your laptop not turning on, then check the power outlet with another device. You may have no power at the wall socket. Also, check that the power cables are firmly connected and that your charger is plugged in properly.
HP Laptop Will Not Turn On When Plugged In
We often spend a lot of time with our laptops plugged in. This does not allow the battery time to discharge.
If your HP laptop will not turn on when plugged in, try disconnecting the charger and holding the power button down for 15 seconds. Then press the power button to attempt to restart the laptop. If the laptop is very hot, it won’t start or charge. Allow it to cool down and then try to restart it.
You may find that the power supply has failed and requires replacement. To test if that is your problem, remove the battery. Plug the charger cable in and see if you can start the laptop.
If it starts, then the battery needs replacement. If it still doesn’t work, then the power supply may have a fault.
Often, laptops will power off when they are too hot. If you are using your laptop in a hot environment or if you’ve blocked the cooling ports, the laptop may overheat.
HP Laptop Will Not Turn On Without Battery
There are multiple protections built into laptops to prevent damage to the machine.
When your HP laptop will not turn on without the battery, it is most likely a faulty battery. Some laptops are set up to not work when the battery is removed or dead. If you have ruled out the power supply as the cause of your problems, then you must replace the battery for the laptop to work.
While many laptops will work with the battery removed, some HP laptops will not work without the battery in place.

HP Laptop Will Not Turn On With Battery
Often, laptops will fail to charge or, once charged, fail to boot up.
If your HP laptop will not turn on with the battery, then check that the power supply is working and that the battery is charged. A faulty charger will not fully charge your battery. A dead battery will not accept a charge and once used up you will not be able to turn your laptop on.
