HBO Max is an exciting new addition to the streaming world and many people have been waiting patiently for its arrival. However, if you have an LG TV, you may have noticed that you can’t find the HBO Max app to add to your home-screen. This article outlines why HBO Max does not work on your LG TV and how your can work around it.
HBO Max cannot be downloaded onto any LG TV because it is not supported. However, you can play HBO content on the TV using an external device. If the app does not work, try updating or restarting the app and device. You can also clear the app cache, reinstall the app and check your WiFi signal.
These troubleshooting methods have been detailed below, as recommended by HBO Max. You can also find a detailed list of which devices do support the app so you know which device you can use to stream your content.
LG TV HBO Max Not Working
HBO Max can only be streamed from a separate device onto your LG TV, which I will explain further down. According to the HBO website, there are five standard troubleshooting tips you can try if your HBO Max app is not working.
1. Install Latest Updates
Sometimes there may be small bugs in the firmware that are preventing your HBO Max system from working. This is particularly common in newer streaming services. To combat this, make sure your HBO Max app is up to date on whichever device you are using.
You may also need to update the firmware on your streaming device. It may be that a component of the device’s firmware is unable to support the HBO Max app. If the streaming device is listed on the HBO website, which you can find further down, they will actively be releasing new firmware updates to fix these issues.
2. Restart the App and Your Device
You can also try restarting both the HBO Max app and your device. It may be something like the app having difficulty contacting the HBO servers. Once you restart the app, you are allowing it to try again.
One successful method is to perform a hard reset on your device. This will clear any small errors that have occurred and are retained in the device’s memory. The following steps should be performed on both your device and TV at the same time to effectively perform a hard reset.
Step 1: Turn off your LG TV and all devices connected to it.
Step 2: Unplug the TV and your streaming device from the power.
Step 3: Press and hold the power button on the TV for 30 seconds.
Step 4: Press and hold the power button on your device for 30 seconds (if it has one).
Step 5: Wait another 10 minutes before plugging your TV and device back into the power source. This will ensure all residual charge has been drained.
Step 6: Reconnect your device to the TV and turn them both on.
You can also try to reset your streaming device t its factory settings. This will clear any saved data or downloaded content from the device, but will also clear any large errors that have occurred over time.
3. Clear the Cache
The cache is where an app’s short-term memory files are stored to allow the app to load faster when you use it. These are temporary files, but having too many build up can cause your app to crash or stop working.
The cache is normally cleared periodically, but if HBO Max is left open for extended periods of time, it may not have the opportunity to clear itself. You should be able to find the option to clear the HBO Max cache in the app settings on your streaming device.
4. Reinstall the App
Reinstalling the app is another way to clear the cache. This will also download the latest version of the HBO Max firmware, ensuring you have the latest bug fixes.
5. Check Network
You home network is one of the most common causes for a streaming service to fail. A weak signal, slow download speed or interference can all disrupt the normal function of your HBO Max app. Even though your TV may be connected to your WiFi, you should also make sure you have connected your streaming device as well.
To test your internet speed, you can use your LG TV’s Web Browser, following the steps below. Streaming normal TV shows or movies on HBO Max requires a download speed of at least 3MB/s. For any 4K content, you should aim for at least 25MB/s.
Step 1: Open the LG Web Browser from the TV’s main menu.
Step 2: Go to any internet speed testing website, such as https://www.speedtest.net/.
Step 3: Follow the website’s instructions to test your internet speed.
If your internet seems slower than what you need for uninterrupted streaming, you can try using an Ethernet cable to connect the modem/router directly into the TV. If this is not an option, you may need to contact your service provider about why your service is so slow.
However, before you assume your modem or router is broken, you should try resetting them. Similar to the hard reset mentioned above, this will clear any internal errors that may be affecting the performance of the modem or router. You can reset these using the process below.
Step 1: Unplug both the modem and router (if you have one).
Step 2: Wait at least one minute with them unplugged.
Step 3: Plug in your modem and wait until it has fully rebooted.
Step 4: Plug in your router and wait until it has fully rebooted.
If none of the above is working, check to see if there are any other devices that may be interfering with your WiFi. These can include the following. Solid walls, water or large distances can also affect your signal.
· Other WiFi or Bluetooth devices.
· Radio devices such as baby monitors.
LG TV HBO Max Won’t Download
If your HBO Max app won’t download onto your chosen device, there may be network issues preventing the download. It may also be a firmware bug. In this case, you should try updating your device or resetting it. These processes are detailed above.
You should also ensure you have enough space on your device to download the HBO Max app. For example, you will need approximately 75MB of free space to install the app on an Apple device.
LG TV HBO Max Won’t Install
If you are struggling to install the HBO Max app on your device, this could be similar to the issues faced when downloading the app. Check your network connection and the space available on your device, then try resetting your streaming device.
HBO Max App Not Showing Up/Available On LG TV
The HBO Max app is not available on LG TVs. Therefore there is no way you can download the app onto your TV until LG and HBO work together to make it available to LG users. Unfortunately, even the previous HBO app, ‘HBO Now’, is not available yet on these TVs.
The only way to play HBO Max content on your LG TV is to use an external device. If you have a 2019 LG Smart TV or something newer, you will be able to use Airplay to stream content directly from an iPhone. This is the only free option for streaming HBO Max content to your TV.
If your TV is too old or you do not have an Apple device to stream from, you could purchase a Chromecast device. This is a small and relatively cheap device that can plug into a HDMI port in the back of your TV. Once it is set up, it will allow you to stream content directly from any phone, tablet or laptop on the same WiFi.
The final option would be purchasing another device, such as an Apple TV, Roku player or Fire TV, or streaming from a PlayStation or Xbox console. Unless you already have one of these devices, this is the most expensive option and defeats the purpose of having a smart TV to begin with. You could also play HBO Max on your laptop while it is plugged in directly to the TV’s HDMI port. This is not ideal though, as the laptop would need to be plugged in every time you use HBO Max.
LG TV HBO Max Not Loading
HBO Max will not load if your network is down or too slow. If this is occurring when opening the app, consider restarting your modem/router. You may also need to clear the HBO Max cache as this can cause the app to crash.
If it is occurring when you are trying to stream content, it is likely that your internet speed is too slow. To stream content, the app will download the episode or movie as you watch, downloading at least a few minutes more than where you are up to in the show.
If the internet connection is too slow, this buffer will not be able to keep up with the playback speed and your stream will keep pausing or will not load at all. Try the troubleshooting methods mentioned at the beginning of this article to resolve this issue.
