Sharp Microwave Not Turning On

Modern microwabe in the kitchen

You open the microwave door to put food inside but there is no light. The microwave is not responding to any command buttons. Why is the Sharp microwave not turning on?

If the Sharp microwave is not turning on, inspect the fuses located inside the microwave. The fuses inside the microwave are designed to blow in order to immediately turn off the power to the microwave. Fuses prevent the microwave from overheating.

There are two different kinds of fuses inside a microwave. It is important to identify the correct one when trying to replace it.

Line Fuse

Microwaves have more than one type of fuse. The line fuse monitors the amount of electrical current passing through the microwave. When the current is too high, the line fuse will blow, and the microwave will not start.

A multimeter tool can test the line for continuity. If no continuity is detected, the fuse needs to be replaced.

The underlying reason why the line fuse should be immediately investigated. Any time there is a surge in electricity, there is the risk of an electrical fire.

Thermal Fuse

Thermal fuses monitor the amount of heat being produced. When the microwave is overheating, the thermal fuse will blow, immediately cutting off power to the microwave.

The reason why a thermal fuse should also be investigated is if the cause is not readily known. A faulty heating element or electrical issue will cause the microwave to overheat, posing a serious fire hazard.

Child Lock

A safety feature on Sharp microwaves is the Child Lock. Engaging this lock feature prevents children or anyone else from being able to activate the microwave.

The microwave will still have power, but the command buttons will be disengaged. The following steps will walk you through how to disengage the Child Lock feature.

Step 1: Press the ‘Clock’ button.

Step 2: Press the number 1 button.

Step 3: Press and hold the ‘Start’ button for 3 seconds.

Step 4: The word ‘SAFE’ should appear on the display screen once the Child Lock feature is turned off. You can repeat these steps to engage the Child Lock feature in the future.

Demo Mode

The ‘Demo Mode’ feature is what stores use so customers can inspect the microwave without actually turning it on or heating anything. This setting can be activated by pressing the wrong sequence of buttons. Here is how you can turn it off.

Step 1: Press the ‘Clock’ button.

Step 2: Press the zero button.

Step 3: Press and hold the ‘Stop/Clear’ button for 3 seconds.

Sharp Microwave Not Heating

Modern microwabe in the kitchen

You put food in the microwave and select the cooking cycle. You return only to find the food is not warm. The microwave is not heating.

If your Sharp microwave is not heating, there could be an issue with the microwave’s magnetron. The magnetron heats up and generates microwaves that travel into the microwave oven, heating and cooking food.

Replacing the magnetron can be dangerous and should only be done by a qualified technician. Another possibility as to why the Sharp microwave is not heating up is if the Central Processing Unit is defective.

Central Processing Unit

The Central Processing Unit inside the microwave is what sends out command signals to the working components of the microwave such as the carousel, timers, and the different food settings.

When the Central Processing Unit is not working correctly, the microwave will not work as it should even though it is still receiving power. A recent power surge can cause this type of issue.

One way to refresh the Central Processing Unit is to clear out the last command. If the last command is stuck, the microwave will not accept a new command.

Press the ‘Stop/Clear’ button several times in a row. After a few seconds, enter a new command and press the ‘Start’ button. The microwave should work as normal.

Sharp Microwave Not Spinning

Modern microwabe in the kitchen

You put the plate in the microwave and turn the microwave on. But the plate is not rotating. Why is the turntable not spinning?

If the Sharp microwave not spinning, the glass tray roller guide could be defective. Inspect the roller guide for cracks, damage, or other signs of wear and tear. If there are signs of damage, replace the roller guide.

The turntable in the microwave is important to use because it rotates the food so that it is cooked or reheated evenly. There are a variety of reasons why the turntable is no longer rotating.

Motor

The most common reason why the turntable will not turn is if there is an issue with the turntable motor. Use a multimeter tool to test whether or not the motor is receiving power.

Step 1: Remove the glass tray and support ring.

Step 2: Remove the screws located in the back of the microwave.

Step 3: Squeeze the plug to disconnect the motor’s wire harness.

Step 4: Remove the terminals connected to the turntable motor’s wires.

Step 5: Connect the multimeter tool to the terminals of the turntable motor.

Step 6: Replace the motor if there is no continuity.

Drive Coupling

The glass tray inside the microwave is powered by a motor-driven coupler. If the couple is broken or stripped, the motor will not work and the turntable will not rotate.

The drive coupling is attached to the turntable motor shaft. Gently remove the coupling from the motor shaft and inspect it for any signs of damage. If signs of damage are visible, the coupling needs to be replaced.

Obstruction

Sometimes the answer is a simple one. The turntable will not rotate if there is anything obstructing the roller guide. Even something as tiny as a poppy seed can obstruct the guide, preventing the tray from turning.

Remove the glass tray and roller guide. Wash the tray and roller guide in warm soapy water. Use a clean cloth to wipe out the inside of the microwave, removing all crumbs or other debris that could affect the wheels of the roller guide.

Sharp Microwave Display Not Working

Modern microwabe in the kitchen

You’ve entered the command in the display but the display panel is blank. Why is the display not working?

If your Sharp microwave display is not working, the main control board could be defective. The control board is responsible for sending commands to the other components of the microwave. The control board will need to be replaced.

The main control board can be replaced but it should only be replaced by a qualified technician. The main cause for a control board to stop working is if the control board has a missing solder or it has a faulty capacitor.

In either event, a steady hand with soldering experience is needed to replace the part. It is best to let the professionals do this type of repair.

Power Supply

If the microwave is not receiving a sufficient supply of power, the display will be blank. Unplug the microwave from its power source and plug in a smaller appliance in its place. This will let you know whether or not the outlet is receiving enough power.

Sharp Microwave Light Not Working

Modern microwabe in the kitchen

The light inside the microwave is a small thing but it is important. It’s hard to see our food without that little light. What does it mean when the light is not working?

If the Sharp microwave light is not working, the light bulb may have burned out. Remove the microwave cover. Locate the halogen light casing. Squeeze the light bulb casing to release it. Unscrew the old bulb and replace it with a new one.

Exercise extreme caution when replacing the light bulb. Even though the microwave is unplugged, the circuitry holds electricity for a while. Leave the microwave unplugged for at least 30 minutes for all the electricity to drain out of the microwave.
