Troubleshoot Maytag Dishwasher Noise Problem (What to Do)

When a dishwasher is operating normally it shouldn’t make unusual noises, other than a quiet click as it goes from one part of the wash cycle to the next, the sloshing around of water, and the hum of the fan during the dry cycle. So, in this article I will explain what to do if your Maytag dishwasher is making other noises, or starts making loud or unusual noises.

As a general rule, it’s caused by an internal component that has failed. A louder than normal hum, buzz or a grinding noise means something is stuck in one of the components, or a part of the component has broken or slipped out of position. Do the steps below to fix it.

It’s possible to inspect and repair the component that is causing the issue, but most issues are too difficult to repair or fix for most people, therefore, you should contact Maytag support to organize a repair technician. Depending on when the noise occurs during the wash cycle CAN help you narrow down what is causing the issue, and some noises that seem odd can in fact be part of the normal operation of your dishwasher. So, below I will cover the different types of noises a Maytag dishwasher will make, whether it’s part of normal operation, as well as any fixes that are easy to fix yourself.

Maytag Dishwasher Circulation Pump Noise

During normal operation a Maytag dishwasher will make a rushing water and swishing water noise. However, when there is an issue with your Maytag dishwasher the circulation pump can make a loud noise that is not normal. Here is what to do when this happens.

In general, this is part of normal operation. But, if the circulation pump noise is louder than normal or making a grinding noise then the circulation pump has likely failed and needs to be repaired or replaced. This is best done by a repair technician, so you should contact Maytag support.

A related component that also might be the issue are the spray arms. When the circulation pump is running it pumps water into the spray arms. And the spray arms will be rotating and spraying water.

It’s possible the spray arms are the issue, and are making a louder than normal noise, or other unusual noise. This can be because the round part where the spray arms connect to the motor has come loose, or has cracked or broken. The spray arms can be easily cleaned and/or replaced yourself.

Maytag Dishwasher Loud Humming Noise

A Maytag dishwasher is normally fairly quiet when it’s operating normally. But, if an issue develops with your dishwasher such as a loud humming noise, or it seems louder than normal there are a few reasons why this happens. Below, is a summary of if a humming noise is part of normal operation, and what to do if it seems too loud.

As a general rule, a mild humming noise is normal. A Maytag dishwasher will hum when the drain pump is running, and at the end of the cycle. At the end of the cycle the hum is caused by the fan that extracts the hot air and steam. If it’s louder than normal, or seems too loud do the steps below.

A loud humming is caused by one of the internal components that has either failed, or has something stuck in it. The issue is that there are multiple components that can be causing it, and therefore, it’s quite a process to identify why it’s happening. As well as, replace or repair the part that is faulty.

There is one part of a Maytag dishwasher that can be inspected and fixed yourself which is the entrance to the drain pump which is located on the bottom of your dishwasher. A piece of food, plastic, or a broken piece of a cup of plate can be lodged there. There is a rotating mechanism called an impeller.

It’s fairly easy to inspect this part and clear anything that can be causing it. The steps to clean the impeller are also used when a dishwasher is not draining.

But, other than that it’s best to contact Maytag support to have a repair technician take a look at it. They will pull your dishwasher out from where it’s positioned, open up the covers and inspect the component that is causing the loud humming noise.

Maytag Dishwasher Makes Grinding Noise During Wash Cycle

A grinding noise is a tell tale sign something is very wrong with your Maytag washer. Here is why a Maytag dishwasher will make a grinding noise and how to fix it.

As a general rule, do an Affresh cycle to clear any blockages caused by food. But, if the grinding noise persists it’s because an internal component has failed mechanically. In general, have a repair technician inspect what component is causing it, and repair or replace it.

During the wash cycle there are 4 components that can be causing the grinding noise:

  • The spray arms
  • The circulation pump
  • The water inlet valve

If you have some experience repairing appliances and working with tools it is possible to clean these, and inspect them to see if they have failed yourself. However, typically it’s easiest to contact Maytag support.

The repair may be covered under warranty. And they can advise you how to schedule a repair technician to fix it for you.

Maytag Dishwasher Making Buzzing Noise

A Maytag dishwasher can make a buzzing noise at different times during a wash cycle. In some cases, this occurs as part of normal operation but at other times it indicates an issue that needs to be fixed. Below, is why a buzzing noise happens and when the buzzing noise is not part of normal operation and needs to be fixed.

In general, a quiet buzzing noise is part of normal operation for a Maytag dishwasher, and will occur when the drain pump is emptying your dishwasher, and when the fan is running to dry the dishes at the very end of the cycle. If the buzzing occurs at other times or is loud do the steps below.

This is caused by either a component that has failed, or has come loose. If a component such as a drain pump has failed and is slightly loose, when it rotates it will make a buzzing noise as the component rubs and bumps against the other parts of your dishwasher.

Typically, identifying which component is causing the issue and repairing or replacing it yourself is too difficult unless you have experience working with appliances. Therefore, you should contact Maytag support to organize a repair or replacement.

Maytag Dishwasher Whistling Noise

If your Maytag dishwasher produces a whistling noise it’s not part of normal operation. There are a few reasons why a Maytag dishwasher can all of a sudden produce a whistling noise during certain parts of the cycle, or constantly. Here is why your Maytag dishwasher is making a whistling noise, and how to stop it from happening.

In general, it’s either the drain motor or water cycle motor that has failed and needs to be repaired or replaced by a repair technician. First try an Affresh cycle to see if this fixes the issue. But, if it doesn’t contact Maytag support to have a repair technician fix it for you.

Maytag Dishwasher Rattling/Crackling/Squealing Noise

A rattling, cracking, or squealing noise is a sure sign that there is a problem with your Maytag dishwasher. Here is why it happens, and how to fix this issue.

In general, either a component has failed, or a piece of cutlery or crockery is not stacked correctly and is moving around. A part of an internal component can break and then it will rub and hit against itself or other components.

For example, there is a motor that pushes water into your dishwasher. If it fails, the spinning part will be rubbing against itself, and/or rattling every now and then as it goes slightly out of position.

Unless you have experience repairing appliances or something similar like electrical experience then it’s best to contact Maytag support. They can let you know if the repair is covered under warranty, and schedule a repair technician to fix this issue with your Maytag dishwasher.

In general, a low hum is part of normal operation, and is produced by the drain pump, extractor fan, or water circulation pump. If it seems overly loud, or there is a grinding, buzzing, whistling, or squealing noise contact Maytag support to organize a repair technician.
