Vizio TV HDMI Not Working (Not Supported/Won’t Connect/Etc.)

Vizio TVs are a cheaper alternative to smart TVs, making them a popular choice among customers. Over time, some customers have noticed that their HDMI ports have stopped working, for one reason or another, but this shouldn’t stop you from getting everything you can out of your Vizio. This article offers some solutions to fix a HDMI port that has stopped working on your Vizio TV.

If the HDMI port on your Vizio TV is not working, there are a few things you can try to troubleshoot the issue. First, make sure the HDMI cable is properly connected to both the TV and the device you’re trying to use. Try unplugging the HDMI cable from both the TV and the device, and then plugging it back in securely. If that doesn’t work, try using a different HDMI cable to see if the issue is with the cable itself.

If the HDMI port still isn’t working, try resetting the TV to its factory settings by going to the TV’s settings menu and selecting “System,” then “Reset & Admin,” and finally “Reset TV to Factory Settings.”

It’s also possible that there is an issue with the TV’s firmware. Check for any available firmware updates and install them if necessary.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it may be a problem with the TV’s HDMI port or hardware.

If you have noticed that your HDMI port has stopped working on your Vizio TV, there may be a number of possible causes. Below are some solutions you can try to get things up and running again.

Restart the TV

Most people have found that restarting the TV using the process below fixes the issue of their Vizio TV not detecting a HDMI input. This is known as a hard restart.

Step 1: Turn off your device and then your Vizio TV.

Step 2: Unplug all HDMI cables from the TV.

Step 3: Unplug your TV’s power from the wall outlet.

Step 4: Press and hold the power button on the TV for 30 seconds. This is located on the back of most Vizio TVs, but you may also find it on the side of the TV.

Step 5: Plug your HDMI cables back into the TV.

Step 6: Plug the TV back into the wall power and turn it on.

If the above does not work, you may have to run through each troubleshooting method below.

Check HDMI Cable

The first thing to check would be the HDMI cable itself. Over time, these cables can come loose or even become damaged. Unfortunately, some cables can also be faulty from the beginning.

Unplug both ends of the cable and re-insert them into the TV and device. You could even try swapping ends to see if one end fits better in you TV or device. Make sure you have pushed the cable all the way in.

If this doesn’t work, try the same cable in a different TV, or try a different HDMI cable in your Vizio TV. This will help determine if it is a faulty or broken cable. Note which HDMI port you are using.

Check Input Source

The next thing to check would be the input source on your TV. It may seem simple, but this has been the solution for some people.

When you inserted the HDMI cable, you would have noticed the port was labelled ‘1’ or ‘2’. Press the ‘Input’ button on your remote and make sure that you have selected the correct input source. If you’re unsure or they have been labelled differently, you can cycle through each one to check.

Broken HDMI Ports

You can also try another HDMI port. Sometimes individual ports can break from too much use. Just make sure to change the input source as well.

If it is seems like none of the HDMI ports are working, it could be the TV’s computer chip, known as the Mother Board. This will need to be replaced if all the ports are broken.

Because this can be expensive, you should try some of the other troubleshooting methods listed below or contact Vizio support to see if they agree. They may even offer to replace the TV under warranty.

If you need to use your device in the meantime, you could always find a HDMI to AV converter. This will allow you to plug a newer device into the old TV input. Keep in mind that your picture quality will not be as good, so this is only a temporary solution.

Device Display Settings (Laptops)

You may also need to check the display settings on your device. This mostly applies to laptops because you can have a laptop plugged in without displaying anything on the second screen.

You can access your display settings on a Windows or Apple computer using the following methods.

Windows 10: Start > Settings > System > Display

Older Windows: Start > Control Panel > Display

Mac: Apple Menu > System Preferences > Displays > Display

You may need to play around with the settings here, but a most common issue is that the display is set to the laptop only. Make sure you have chosen to mirror or extend your display onto the TV for the audio/visual input to work.

You may also need to check the resolution, but I will explain this further down.

Update Your Firmware

If there is a bug in the firmware preventing your HDMI ports from working, there may be a new update available with the bug fix. If your firmware is out of date, follow the steps below to update the TV.

Step 1: Press the ‘Menu’ button on your remote.

Step 2: Navigate to System > Check for Updates.

Step 3: If an update is available, select ‘Confirm’ to start the update.

Step 4: Wait for the update to complete.

Reset the TV to Factory Settings

Resetting the TV to its factory settings will help if there are any setting that have been changed to make your HDMI ports stop responding. It will also help if there are any firmware bugs in the latest firmware on your TV.

Resetting the TV to factory settings will restore the TV back to its original firmware. It will also delete all of your saved preferences and downloaded apps, so only do this if you are happy to set up your TV from scratch.

Step 1: Press the ‘Menu’ button on the remote.

Step 2: Navigate to System > Reset & Admin

Step 3: Enter your passcode or the default code, ‘0000’.

Step 6: Run through the TV set-up process.

Make sure to check the HDMI ports are working before attempting to update your TV again.

Vizio TV HDMI Not Supported / Compatible

If your Vizio TV says the HDMI is ‘Not Supported’ or ‘Not Compatible’, it is most likely related to the resolution of your device. You can find which resolutions are compatible with your Vizio TV in the user manual.

Once you know which resolution will be accepted by the TV, navigate to the display settings on your device, whether it is a DVD player, laptop, gaming console or other streaming device.

The most common resolutions that you should try are 1920×1080 (‘1080p’) or 1280×720 (‘720p’). If this does not fix the issue, try the troubleshooting methods above.
