Black And Decker Air Fryer Is Not Turning On (How To Fix)

Out of all of the different appliances we have around our home, I think the air fryer is probably the most convenient. What do you do, however, when the air fryer is no longer turning on?

The most common reason why an air fryer is not turning on is that it is not plugged in properly. Make sure that the plug is firmly seated into the receptacle and if necessary, test the receptacle by plugging in another appliance. In most cases, this will get you back up and running quickly.

It would be nice if things worked easily and every time we wanted something to work well, it would work well. As we continue to get more and more advanced with the electronic appliances that we use, however, we quickly find that simplicity is not always improving along with them.

We love the fact that our air fryers are able to cook food without oil and we can cook food quickly for our entire family. At the same time, however, we need to put up with some glitches along the way and one of those is for the air fryer not to work in the first place.

As we work our way down through this article, you will find that there are numerous possibilities of why an air fryer may not turn on, and along with it, there are some specific reasons why certain models of air fryers may not be working.

It is best if you look down through the list one by one because you will likely find something that works well for you. Even if you don’t find something and the air fryer is completely dead, there may still be options available so that you can get it replaced for free.

We will also consider a number of other issues that may be associated with working on an air fryer. Here are 4 to consider.

1. Safety – One thing that is important to consider when working on any type of electric appliance is safety. It is very easy to injure yourself or even to die as a result of working on electricity. This includes the electricity that is coming out of the receptacle in your kitchen.

The first order of business when you are going to do any electrical work around the home is to turn off the electricity. It should be turned off at the breaker box and you should find a way to lock it out so nobody can turn it back on accidentally.

For the most part, an air fryer is not going to hold on to electricity after it is unplugged and even if it does, it will not hold onto it for more than a few minutes. The real problem is when you work on something electrical and then plug it in, because you may be exposed to an issue if you energized the item.

You should also pay attention to other areas of safety, such as wearing safety glasses when doing any DIY work and the possibility of wearing some all-purpose gloves. Rather than being cumbersome, they can protect you and your health.

2. Warranty – Even if you are somebody who is technically inclined and you don’t have any fear of opening up your air fryer and fixing it, you may be doing more harm than good. In many cases, if you open the air fryer to do any work, you’re going to void the warranty.

Quite simply, if the air fryer is relatively new, it may still be covered under warranty and the company may fix it or replace it for free. It is best if you check the documentation that came with the air fryer or research it online to see if you qualify under a factory warranty.

Some stores where you buy air fryers may also have a warranty of their own. That is why it is a good idea to keep your receipt if you feel that there may come a time when you need to call in the warranty.

3. Specific Solutions – Although we would like things to be simple, there are times when certain models of air fryers will have problems that need to be addressed. This could even be a factory recall for some electronic appliances.

It would be difficult to keep up with all of the recalls and other issues that may be associated with the specific models you may own. We will cover some of the details of those models in the paragraphs below, but for the most part, you would want to check online to see if there was a recall.

4. Multiple Problems – When you have one problem occurring with an appliance, it typically leads to other problems occurring. If you don’t catch it quickly enough, you may end up having to fix a number of issues in order for things to get back in working order.

That may be the case below. You might find a problem with the electrical cord, for example, but that issue could lead to the thermal fuse blowing. Fixing one or the other is not going to fix the air fryer but fixing both will get it back up and working.

The best decision you could make when working on appliances is to do it methodically. Do the things that are most likely the problem and if they don’t fix the issue, move on down through the list. Sooner or later, you will find the solution.

For now, let’s take a look at seven different reasons why an air fryer might not turn on. You might just have your solution before the list is over.

Fixing Black And Decker Air Fryer When Not Turning On

Air fryer with food inside

Black & Decker is one of the best-known names in tools and appliances. If you have a Black & Decker air fryer that is not working, how can you get it working again?

Reset the Air Fryer

Your Black & Decker air fryer is equipped with a protection system that shuts down if it overheats. After it turns on, you cannot use the appliance. Remove the food and let the appliance cool off for 30 minutes. You can then set the appliance on its side and locate the reset button. Use a pointed object to press the reset button for two seconds and this should fix the issue.

Removed Pan

If the pan has been removed from your Black & Decker air fryer, it will no longer operate. You have to reinsert the pan properly to get it working again.

When you have an air fryer that is not turning on, the first things to check are the power cord and power supply. Make sure that the receptacle is live and that the air fryer is plugged in fully. If not, plug it in or move it to a different receptacle.

7 Reasons Black And Decker Air Fryer is Not Turning On

Nobody ever said it was going to be easy to fix your air fryer. Then again, fixing it may be one of the easiest things you do all day.

When you are having a problem with your air fryer and it is not turning on, here are seven different solutions that may help you to get back up and running easily.

1. Electrical Problems Stopping the Air Fryer from Working

The first and most common reason why an air fryer will no longer turn on is that the electricity is not getting to it. Although we typically only think about plugging it into the wall and pushing the power button, there are actually quite a few stops along the way that could be problematic.

The first place to start is with the receptacle itself. Receptacles don’t typically have problems but in the kitchen, it may be possible that they get grease back into the receptacle and they could get burnt out.

The easiest way to test this is to unplug your air fryer and plug in a different appliance. Make sure that you are doing it in the specific plug that was being used for the air fryer and not a different plug on the same receptacle. It is possible that half of the receptacle is bad.

If the receptacle is not working, it may need to be replaced or it could be a problem with the circuit breaker. Go to the breaker panel and open it. Look for a breaker that is out of line with the others that may also have some red showing on the side.

That is the sign of a tripped breaker and you can reset a breaker by turning it completely to the off position and then back on again.

This tends to be an easy fix and it sometimes happens because you are overloading the circuit. Air fryers and other portable appliances take a lot of energy. If you are using your air fryer, a toaster, some kitchen lights, a ceiling fan, and maybe even a countertop microwave oven at the same time, your circuit breaker is going to buckle under the pressure.

If your circuit breaker continues to trip, you can try running just a few items on the circuit at one time. If problems continue to occur, contact an electrician because the breaker itself may be bad.

Downstream from the receptacle, you have the power cord that plugs in and runs to your air fryer. This power cord can sometimes be pulled out separately so it is relatively easy to replace. It is also easy not to plug in fully.

Make sure that you check the plug on both ends of the cable. It needs to be firmly seated in order to work.

You should also check those areas for any debris or buildup of grease. That could keep the power from flowing. You can clean them but make sure that you do so with the power off.

2. Internal Fuse Problems

Up until this point, we’ve been talking about electrical problems that occur outside of the air fryer. It is also possible for them to occur on the inside of the air fryer.

Most air fryers have something that is known as a thermal fuse. That fuse measures the heat in the air fryer and if it gets too hot, it will disconnect and shut the power down to it.

This is a real safeguard, but it can also be problematic if the thermal fuse is no longer operating properly. It could be sending signals to the control panel, alerting it to an issue with the heat when one doesn’t actually exist.

After unplugging the air fryer from the receptacle, find the internal thermal fuse and remove it. You can check it with a multimeter to see if it tests for continuity and if necessary, a new one can be purchased and replaced.

3. Air Fryer Control Panel is Not Working

The internal computer for any electronic device, including your air fryer and other appliances, is in the control panel. The control panel is typically directly attached to the keypad where you push the buttons, turn the dials, and otherwise make the appliance work.

If the control panel is experiencing any problems, then the air fryer is not going to work. It’s like trying to operate your body without a brain.

Unfortunately, it is not easy and is sometimes impossible to test the control panel. Typical problems include some of the buttons working and others not working or strange glitches building up and happening at random.

After unplugging the air fryer to ensure that you’re not going to get shocked, remove the control panel and inspect it. Use a magnifying glass and flashlight to make sure that you can see everything.

If you notice any of the circuitry that is burnt or if you notice cracks in the panel, it is likely the culprit. It can be replaced but not fixed.

4. Stuck or Broken Power Button/Switch

A similar problem to the control panel is for the power button or switch not to work. In some cases, this may be a control panel problem but it could also just be a simple matter of grease and debris getting stuck under the switch or button.

The easiest way to fix a problem with this is to work the power button multiple times. You don’t even have to have it plugged in to fix it. Just work the power button or toggle switch to get things loosened up again.

If that doesn’t work, you may need to remove the power button and replace it.

5. Air Fryer Basket Is Not Inserted Properly

In order for an air fryer to work properly, the basket has to be inserted properly. If the air fryer notices that it is not inserted, it will likely give you an error message and will not work.

This is a safety feature that is built into the electronic appliance and one that can be of benefit to you if it works as it should. If you’re having problems with this issue, make sure that the basket is seated properly each time you use it.

If you continue to get the error message but it isn’t corrected when you fix the basket, you may need to get a new basket. They can get warped at times and it leads to this problem.

6. Air Fryer Turning on But Not Heating

Sometimes the problem you have with your fryer is not fully understood. It may turn on so you have power to it but it’s not heating.

Although this is not the same type of problem, it is something that needs to be addressed. After all, if your air fryer is not heating, none of your food is cooking. What can be done?

Typically, this can be boiled down to a problem with user error. Perhaps you didn’t close the lid fully or you might not have inserted the basket so that it is completely seated in the position.

When you find that you are having this issue, it can be frustrating because you might not know about the heating problem until it is almost too late. It could ruin a recipe, but it is easy to avoid in most cases.

Rather than rushing through the process, take your time and make sure that you are doing everything according to the instructions. You will likely find that this solves the problem and gets you back up and running quickly.

7. Air Fryer Needs to Be Replaced

One other issue that can occur at times is for the air fryer to be completely destroyed. They might have internal problems that are unable to be repaired or they could have so many small problems that it really isn’t worth repairing.

If you feel like you are having this difficulty, the best thing to do is to check with the warranty and see if you are covered. If you are, you may just get a brand-new air fryer for your trouble.

Even if you are covered under warranty, however, air fryers are relatively inexpensive. You can often find them on sale or you may be able to purchase one locally through the Facebook marketplace or even on eBay. You might be surprised by what people or selling them for.
