Can You/Should You Paint Over Formica Table? (How To)

Painting supplies on a table

You want to give your table a face-lift, but you realize it is Formica. Can you/should you paint over the Formica table?

You can paint Formica if the table is in good condition. You should only paint Formica if you are able to give it the time and patience required. Painting Formica will involve cleaning, sanding, cleaning again, and patience between each coat of primer and paint.

Buying new furniture can be expensive. If the Formica table is in good condition, you can save money while expressing your creative flair by painting the Formica. With a little prep work, you are a weekend away from enjoying the fruits of your labor.

Can You Paint Over Formica Table?

You can envision the makeover you want to give your table but it’s not wood. It’s Formica. Can you paint over a Formica table?

Yes, you can paint over a Formica table. Formica is non-porous so it will need to be roughened so that the paint will stick to it. Use a sander that is fitted with either 120- or 15-grit sandpaper. Use a damp cloth to remove the dust before painting.

It can seem daunting and very time-consuming to use both primer and paint. Primer is the only way to get the paint to adhere to the Formica. Nowadays, you can buy paint that has the primer included. This type of paint is more expensive, but it will save you time and money in the long run.

If the Formica table is dark and you want to paint it a lighter color, you will have to add several coats even with the primer included. The most important thing to remember is that each coat must dry completely before applying the next coat.

Not allowing the primer and paint to dry between coats will cause the paint to have gaps where you can see the Formica coming through or the paint will peel off. The only way to remedy these results is to start all over.

What Tools And Preparation Are Needed?

You’ve decided you want to paint your Formica table. You have the time and patience and are ready to get started. What tools and preparation are needed?

Before you start painting your Formica table, use a drop cloth or old bed sheet to cover the floor underneath the table. If your table has leaves, set up a workstation for the leaves to be placed on while they dry. Place a sheet under the leaves to catch paint drips.

Now that the floor is protected, here are the other items you will need to paint your Formica table.

· 120- 150- grit sandpaper.

· Bucket with mild degreaser mixed with warm water.

· Clean rags to remove the dust from sanding the Formica.

· Epoxy putty – to fill in any scratches or dents so that you have a smooth finished surface.

· Water-based bonding primer.

· Painter’s tape.

· Paint.

· Small roller brush and paintbrush.

· Painter’s tray.

· Painter’s Stir Sticks.

· Clear Gloss acrylic top coat to seal the table and protect the color from everyday wear and tear.

Having all of the items listed above together before you start painting your Formica table will help you finish the project faster. When it comes to protecting the floor, sanding the Formica, and applying several coats of primer and paint, it is best not to skip or rush over these steps.

Skipping or rushing these steps will only add to your frustration at the end of the project because the table will not look good, and you will have a great mess to clean up. It’s best to take your time and follow each step.

What Type Of Paint To Use For A Formica Table?

You can envision the new look of your table and are ready to get started. But what type of paint do you use for a Formica table?

To paint a Formica table, use paint that is either semi-gloss or high-gloss enamel paint. Enamel paint is able to withstand the knicks, dents, and scratches our tables are exposed to on a daily basis. Enamel paint will also retain its shine for years to come.

Choosing the wrong type of paint on Formica can cause the paint to have streaks, separate, or peel. If you are not sure which type of paint you want, ask the professionals for recommendations.

Painting a Formica table is the most affordable – and fun- way to express yourself and update your room at the same time. But Formica is not like painting wood. Formica requires prep work and patience.

It may seem daunting at first but the process can be enjoyable if you allow yourself the time needed. Before starting the project, you want to make sure you are able to work safely.

Sanding and painting Formica can present serious health hazards. The dust and fumes can cause skin, eye, and lung irritation.

Safety goggles will protect your eyes from the tiny dust particles. Long-sleeves will protect your skin from the dust and any paint that may drip. Wear a tight-fitting N95 while sanding and a respirator when painting, especially if you are not able to work in a well-ventilated area.

Step 1: Protect the surrounding floor.

Use a drop cloth or old bed sheet to protect the floor underneath the table. Use a drop cloth or sheet to place your paint and roller trays on as well.

Step 2: Clean the table.

Mix a mild degreaser in a bucket of warm water. Thoroughly wash and dry the table. Removing any dirt, oil, or other grime from the table will ensure the Formica is being sanded and not just the dirt.

Step 3: Use sandpaper to roughen the Formica.

Formica is non-porous, which is why it is so smooth. The Formica needs to be roughened up in order for the primer to adhere to it. Use 120 – or 150- grit sandpaper to roughen the Formica.

Step 4: Clear the dust.

It’s important to remove all traces of dust before applying the primer. Any amount of dust left behind will prevent the primer from sticking to the Formica. This will affect the paint’s ability to stick, often resulting in the paint peeling off.

Step 5: Fill in any imperfections with Epoxy putty.

Epoxy-putty will give your table a smooth finished appearance. If you are not looking for a smooth surface and like the appearance of the dents, scratches, etc., then you can skip this step.

If you decide to use the epoxy putty, use a putty knife or old kitchen knife to apply the putty and smooth it out. Let the putty dry and then lightly sand the putty so that the table surface is uniformly smooth.

Step 6: Remove the dust.

Once again, use a damp cloth to remove any dust created from sanding the epoxy. Allow the Formica to completely dry before proceeding to the next step.

Step 7: Use painter’s tape to tape off any areas of the table that will not be painted.

Step 8: Apply the primer.

Use the small roller brush to apply the primer to the tabletop. The roller brush will leave a smoother finish than a bristle brush. Allow the primer to dry completely before applying the second coat.

Step 9: Apply the paint.

Use a roller brush or paintbrush to apply the paint. As with the primer, allow the paint enough time to dry thoroughly before reapplying the next coat. The number of coats needed will depend on the original color of the Formica and how well the new color covers.

Step 10: Seal the Formica with two coats of oil-based polyurethane.

This step is one of personal preference. It is not necessary to seal the paint but a coating of sealant will make the Formica waterproof and stainproof. The sealant will also give the table a high shine along with a protective coating.

If you are unsure whether to seal the paint, your local paint store professional can assist you.
