Carpet Cost Estimator / Calculator

One of the many different things you can do around the home to make improvements is to change out the flooring. In many parts of the world, carpeting is preferred because it offers warmth and it also does so on a budget. How can you estimate carpeting costs?

The easiest way to estimate the cost of carpeting is to measure the length and width of the room being carpeted. Multiply the length by the width to get the square footage and then multiply that figure by the cost per square foot.

It is not difficult to estimate the cost of carpeting but there are a number of things that need to be considered in the process. This includes who is going to be installing the carpeting as well as the type of carpeting that is being installed.

On the low end of carpeting, you can expect to pay approximately $.50 per square foot. This is not going to get you a high quality carpet but it will cover the floor.

On the upper end of carpeting, however, you could easily spend $10, $12, or much more per square foot. You will be getting higher quality carpeting in this instance, which may last longer than the less expensive carpeting.

Of course, it’s not all about the cost of carpeting because there are a number of other factors to consider. This includes the area of the home where it is going to be installed as well as who lives in the home, including if you have any pets.

Putting a higher quality carpeting in a room is not going to be beneficial if it is going to be ruined very quickly. Many people with children and pets or a home that is very busy still want to carpet the room, but they want it to last a long time.

That is why you can choose something like a low pile, or perhaps a Berber carpet in those instances. It adds some warmth and other benefits to the room and it certainly will cover the floor. At the same time, however, it will not have to be pulled out quickly.

Other factors also need to be considered, such as what is going under the carpeting, any tools that may need to be purchased for the project, and even the cost of removal of the old flooring.

We will consider those factors and more in this article.

How To Calculate How Much Carpet Materials Needed

Computing using calculator

The first step in the process is to calculate how much carpet material is needed for the project. This is not difficult, but there are more than one factors that need to be considered.

You purchase carpet by the square foot, so you need to calculate the square foot of the area being carpeted. This is done by measuring the length and the width and multiplying those two numbers.

If you have an odd-shaped room or are doing multiple rooms, you can measure each rectangle or square individually. Make sure that you don’t overlap those areas, or you can get an inaccurate number.

After you get the square footage of each individual area, add those numbers together to get the square footage.

You should always add some overage when you are installing carpeting. As a general rule, 20% overage is recommended. Depending upon the type of carpeting being installed, you may be able to return the overage for a refund.

An overage is there for a number of different reasons. It can help in case you made a miscalculation or it may help if you make a mistake with the installation. In either case, it’s best to have the overage from the same lot so you don’t have a color difference.

How To Calculate Cost Of Carpet Materials

Now that you know how much carpet and other materials are needed, you need to get the cost before you head off with your credit card in hand.

Essentially, you need to get the square footage of the room to calculate the cost of carpet materials. Multiply the length of the room by the width of the room and then multiply it by the cost per square foot. This will give you a general indication of your carpet material cost.

In most cases, you have two different things that need to be considered when installing carpeting. You have the carpeting itself, but you also have the padding.

If you’re pulling up carpeting and the padding is in good condition, you might even consider reusing it to save some money. If you can fit it into your budget, however, you would be better off replacing the padding because it adds a number of benefits.

Carpet padding adds comfort to the room as well as some soundproofing. It is something that you certainly should not overlook because it can really make the job something you enjoy for many years to come.

This leads us to the question, how much should you be spending on carpet padding? There are generally three different levels of carpet padding for any type that is considered. It is recommended that you get the highest quality padding you could afford.

Other costs can also be considered in this calculation, such as the alternatives that may be available. That can come in the way of the different types of padding you may choose.

This could include rubber padding, rebond padding, waffle padding, fiber padding, and even memory foam. It is best if you research this because there may be a specific type of padding that is better for you and your family.

How To Calculate Cost Of Carpet Installation (Cost Of Materials, Labor, Incidentals)

By this point, you should have the cost of the project firmly in mind. You know how much you will be paying for the carpeting and any other materials that may be needed, such as padding. Now let’s consider how much you would pay for installation.

As a general rule, you will pay approximately one dollar per square foot for carpet installation. This will be the price you pay for a general contractor or carpet installation company that has insurance and the experience to do a good job.

There are a number of things to consider when hiring somebody to install carpeting. Perhaps the most important of these is the fact that you have to trust the people in your home.

Always hire a quality company that has insurance and is bonded. They should also have good ratings that can be found through the Better Business Bureau website or online.

One other thing to consider is the possibility that you may be able to get free installation. This is sometimes offered by larger retailers, such as Home Depot or Lowe’s.

When you purchase carpeting through some retailers, they will offer free installation. Typically, it is built into the price of the carpeting so you still need to compare prices but it is a possibility, as they do the research to get you a good company in your home.

Other Things To Consider When Estimating A Carpet Project

Computing using calculator

As is the case with any project, there are going to be many factors to consider. When installing carpeting, you need to look beyond the carpet itself and the underlayment.

Those two factors are important but they are not the only things to consider when doing this job. For example, you may have some flooring that needs removed or repaired before the carpeting goes down.

Flooring removal can add to the cost of a project and really could be more expensive than the installation of carpeting. Depending upon the type of floor you have, you may want to consider just using it as a subfloor.

One thing to keep in mind is the elevation of the floor. If you put carpeting on top of an existing floor, you are going to be raising the floor slightly. You will also be adding some weight, which should also be kept in mind.

You also need to consider any materials that may not be included in the process. Those additional materials could include a tack strip or the transitions that take you from carpeting to another type of floor or from carpeting to carpeting.

In many cases, if you hire a company to put down the carpeting, they will worry about those extra expenses. They add them into the billing process so you often don’t even see them included.

If you are going to be doing the installation yourself, however, they are going to be an expense that is unavoidable. In some cases, some of them may be avoided, such as if you are installing carpeting after removing carpeting but in others, they will affect the bottom line.

Installing carpeting in the home may be a fairly easy process but it is not one to rush into without thinking about it in advance. Give it the thought it deserves and in the end, you will have a project you can be proud of.
