Amana Dryer Not Working

I think that most of us would agree that a dryer is one of the most convenient appliances we have in the home. If they aren’t working, we want to get them back up and running quickly.

The most common reason why an Amana dryer is not working is that it is not getting power. This could be an issue with the power supply, such as a tripped breaker or a bad receptacle. If not, it is an internal issue, such as the thermal fuse going bad or a damaged power cable.

Of course, a problem with the power is only one of the many different issues that could result in an Amana dryer not working. As you look down through the following list, you are likely to see another issue that needs to be resolved at your home.

Amana Dryer Not Working

Since a power problem is a primary reason why an Amana dryer may stop working, we will look down through the most common reasons why it could happen to you and what to do about it.

Tripped Breaker – If a breaker trips, you are not going to get any power to the dryer at all. A dryer will be on its own, dedicated breaker so make sure it is labeled in the breaker box.

A tripped breaker will be slightly out of line with the other breakers and may have a red line showing on one side. Turn the breaker off and on again.

If the breaker continues to trip, contact an electrician. It may be a problem with the breaker or the wiring that needs to be fixed.

Receptacle – Although receptacles don’t often go bad, the plug for your Amana dryer is a specialty item. Be cautious when working with it because it is high voltage.

If you suspect that the receptacle needs replaced, contact an electrician. You should not work on a high-voltage plug unless you know what you are doing.

Power Cable – Inspect the power cable carefully for any damage. Check the plug itself for any burnt areas or if a prong is bent or missing. Replace the pigtail if it is damaged.

Check the Door Latch

Your Amana dryer may stop automatically when you open the door. This is a safety feature that is built into the dryer.

If your door latch or sensor is not working properly, it may shut down your dryer because it thinks that the door is open. You can check continuity on the latch and sensor using a multimeter.

Thermal Fuse – There is a fuse in your Amana dryer that monitors the temperature and shuts things down if it gets too hot. If the thermal fuse is going bad, it may keep your dryer from stoping.

Start Switch – One of the common problems experienced by many Amana dryer owners is that the start switch is not working. You can use a multimeter to check the switch.

Dryer Settings – Since your dryer does not just have an on/off switch, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the settings. If any of them are not set right, the dryer may not start.

Amana Dryer Not Turning On

If your Amana Dryer is not turning on, you are likely looking at a start switch issue. Try this to get it working.

If the start switch is malfunctioning on your Amana dryer, you will not get it to turn on. It will be getting power so the lights may work but the switch needs to work for it to start. Use a multimeter to test the switch and replace it if necessary.

Sometimes, the dryer will give you an indication that it is not working by the sounds that it makes. For example, if the switch is the problem, it will probably not make any sound when you try to turn it on.

On the other hand, you may try to start the dryer and it could make a humming or a slight buzzing sound. This is not typically a problem with the switch but it could be a problem with the motor.

Like the switch, it is possible to test the motor using a multimeter. If it is bad, it will likely need to be replaced. Some motor issues can be repaired but it may be worth the cost just to replace the motor because it should last for a long time.

Another problem that can keep the dryer from starting is if there is an issue with the door switch. This is the switch that activates when the door is shut and allows the dryer to work.

If the door switch is faulty, it will not allow the dryer to start. This is a safety system built into the Amana dryer to keep it from operating with the door open.

One other issue that could stop the dryer from starting is if there is a problem with the main control board. You can’t test the control board easily but you can inspect it.

If you see any burnt areas or cracks on the control board, it should be replaced. You can not repair the control board.

Amana Dryer Not Spinning

We need our Amana dryer to spin in order to tumble the clothes and get them dry. Here is what has gone wrong when your dryer is no longer spinning.

The main reason why your Amana dryer has stopped spinning is that the drum rollers are damaged or have worn out. When this happens, the drum will not spin. Try to spin the drum by hand when the dryer is off. If it is stuck in place or spins with difficulty, the rollers are likely worn.

There are also some other issues that could lead to the drum not spinning. This would include issues with the drive belt.

When the drive belt breaks, the drum will no longer spin. You may smell a burning rubber smell when this happens and it will suddenly stop, rather than gradually stopping.

The drive belt can also become stretched over time. This is an issue that is typically associated with overloading the dryer. A stretched drive belt needs to be replaced.

One other issue that can keep the drum from spinning is if the bearing supports are worn out and need replacing. Try turning the drum by hand and if it seems stuck in place, it is probably a problem with the bearings.

Amana Dryer Keeps Shutting Off

It can be frustrating when a dryer keeps shutting off but it is something that can be fixed.

A faulty drive belt is the primary cause behind an Amana dryer that keeps shutting off. It usually happens within a few minutes after the driver starts and may be accompanied by the smell of burning rubber. Drive belts can stretch over time, especially if you overload the dryer frequently. Replace the drive belt.

Another possible reason why the dryer is shutting off is that the door latch is not working properly. The door latch allows the dryer to run and if it is broken, the dryer will think the door is open.

You may be able to start the dryer with a faulty door latch but the vibrations will eventually trigger it to stop the dryer from operating.

One other thing to check is the moisture sensor. This device detects when the clothes are dry to keep the dryer from running for too long.

If the moisture sensor is malfunctioning, it may be sending faulty signals to the control board to turn the dryer off at the wrong time.

Amana Dryer Turns On But won’t Start

When an Amana dryer won’t start, even though it will turn on, it is a problem that needs your attention.

A blown or faulty thermal fuse is the most common reason why an Amana dryer will turn on but not start. The thermal fuse is designed to shut off power to the dryer if it overheats. Once the fuse starts to fail, it may not allow the dryer to start, even though you are getting power to the controls.

If you are experiencing problems with the thermal fuse, it has to be replaced. Until it is replaced, you will continue to have the same problem with the dryer.

Other issues that can stop an Amana dryer from starting include a faulty door latch or operating the dryer using an extension cord.

Amana Dryer Won’t Start Just Buzzes

Is your Amana dryer buzzing but not starting? This is probably a problem with the belt or motor.

The two most common reasons why a dryer will make a buzzing sound and not start are if the motor is burnt out or if the belt is faulty. The belt can be examined visually for any defects and the motor can be tested using a multimeter. You can replace both the motor and the belt to get things running again.

If the issue is not the belt or motor, then it could be a problem with faulty rollers. In fact, any part of the machine that works with the operation of the drum could be at fault.

If your Amana Dryer is not working, the first place to look is with the power. If you are not getting power to the machine, such as with a faulty cord, breaker, or receptacle, it should be fixed. Otherwise, it could be a problem with the door latch or the thermal fuse. Any of these is fairly easy to fix.
