Can You Put Peel and Stick Tile Over Textured Surface (Walls/Floor)? (How To)

Refreshing the look of your house doesn’t always require expensive renovations Sometimes, all it takes is a simple, cost-efficient hack, like using peel and stick tiles. The question is: can you put peel and stick tile over texture surface?

Technically, you can use peel and stick tiles on textured surface. What you really need to look out for is how well the tiles will adhere to it. The adhesive peel of the tile needs to be set evenly in order for it to stay on. Textured surfaces can make this difficult.

However, this shouldn’t keep you from making the most out of this option. With the right tools and instructions, you can pull off a brand new look in your home using only peel and stick tiles.

Before you go and buy your peel and stick tiles, you should first have a clear understanding of the surface you’re working with. The biggest issue you need to anticipate is whether or not the tiles you’re using will be able to successfully stick on the textured surface.

The material used on the floor or wall has a direct impact on the stick and peel tiles. A stucco or brick wall, for example, wouldn’t be the most ideal surface to work with. To make the stick-on tiles work you might need to use an extra layer, like an acrylic panel.

Remember that the key to a successful application is having an even layer where the adhesive peel can stick on fully.

What makes textured surfaces challenging to work with are the gap between the textures, which could have otherwise been utilized as added support. Once this issue is resolved, however, such as with an acrylic layer, putting up the stick-on tiles should be a breeze.

The tools you’ll need to put peel and stick tile over textured walls will vary depending on the kind of surface you’re working with.

Ultimately, you need materials that will help you get that even surface for the perfect application. A sander, primer, and paint are good for starters. Use a roller brush to prime and paint faster. Get an acrylic layer if that works best for your surface.

You might also need a drywall scraper, a water can or spray. Because you’ll be exposed to microdust and particles, having the proper safety equipment is important too.

Wear a mask in case you have any respiratory sensitivities, just to be on the safe side. Safety goggles should also protect you from any debris or spray particles.

What Preparations Do You Need to Put Peel and Stick Tile Over Textured Surface?

Using stick and peel tiles is as easy as it can be. However, you still need to put in some work, specifically when it comes to preparing the textured surface.

The most important component in successfully using a peel and stick tile is having a clean surface. Remove any dirt or grime that could lessen the hold of the adhesive peel. Use a degreaser if necessary. Clean the surface thoroughly, including the grout lines.

Cleaning a smooth wall or floor tiles are easy enough to do. With a textured surface, however, you’ll need a bit more work.

If you’re working on a kitchen backsplash, a degreaser would be very helpful in ensuring that you get rid of all the oil splatter buildup.

If it’s stucco walls, you’ll need to smoothen out the surface to remove the textures. For this, you’ll need to sand the surface. An electric sander is helpful in getting the job done fast. Also keep sandpaper handy to make sure you get to even the hard to reach or smaller corners.

For stucco walls that have big reliefs, you’ll need to sand the surface all the way down to the drywall. Using a scraper helps get this job done faster.

A good tip to make this process easier for you is to first soak the walls. Using your spray cans, soak the walls or floor with water, leaving it on for about 15 to 20 minutes.

By the time you come back, the water would have been absorbed and softened the surface, making it a lot easier for you to sand or scrape. For textures with bigger chunks, use a drywall knife first before proceeding to sand it down.

Keep that water spray handy to repeat the soaking process as needed. Especially if you’re working on a big surface area, the water would have dried and hardened the surface again by the time you get to the other sections.

Once all the sanding and leveling preparations are done, you need to apply the primer. Some prefer to use interior paint instead, and that should be fine too.

Once the surface is clean, all that’s left for you to do is apply your peel and stick tiles. Make sure to choose the right design and dimensions to achieve your desired results.

The primer would take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours to dry, so you’ll need to wait a bit before you proceed to install the peel and stick tiles. When it’s fully dry, do a final clean of the surface by brushing off any dust or dirt that might have settled on it while the primer was drying.

When all the final preparations are ready, you can go ahead and apply the tiles. And as is the biggest selling point of these tiles, all you need to do is peel off the protective paper, and stick the tile on the wall according to your design plan.

Repeat the process until you’ve covered all the surface area you’ve decided to work on. Once that’s done, simply leave the tiles to adhere to the surface, and you can enjoy the advantages of using peel and stick tiles.
