If you want to upgrade the look of your home, whether inside or outside, then putting stone veneers is a great idea. As with any other home improvement projects, however, it always pays to be on the lookout for any potential issues.

Should you decide to put stone veneer over drywall, pay attentiont to how it is sealed. One of the most common issues is water seepage. This can lead to mold growth, which can damage the wall underneath. It can also cause rotting of the material, further spreading the damage.

What Tools Do You Need to Put Stone Veneer Over Drywall?

The secret to successfully installing stone veneer over drywall is having the right tools and techniques. With these, the task can be completed safely and efficiently.

The most important tool you’ll need to put stone veneer over drywall is a cement board. This makes it possible to add the stone veneer without having to tear down the drywall. You’ll also need screws that are long enough to pass through the cement board and drywall.

Other tools to help you pull off this job include a thin-set mortar for a better hold on the stone against the wall. Make sure to get the one with polymer additive for best results. If the stone veneer is going to be applied on the outside, you might need a metal lath for added strength.

Apart from that, keep your drill, screwdriver, concrete hand grinder, and sheet metal cutter handy. And don’t forget your measuring tape, level, and table saw.

What Preparations Do You Need to Put Stone Veneer Over Drywall?

The preparation is just as important to the actual application itself. Get your tools ready, organize your work area so you can have a smoother workflow, and keep your workspace safe.

The first thing you need to prepare to put stone veneer over drywall is to compute how much stone veneer panels you’ll need. Once you have the panels, lay them out first as you would install it on the wall to see the fit. You may need to cut some panels to fit a certain section.

To compute how much stone veneers you’ll need, multiply the length (ft) by the height (ft) to get the size of your surface area (sq. ft). This will help ensure that you have enough materials to work with.

If you’re installing stone veneers with irregular dimensions, like the exterior of a bay window or the face of a fireplace, you’ll most likely have to cut or trim the stone veneer to fit the corner sections.

While some would suggest pre-cutting the stone veneers at this point, it might be better to wait until everything else has been put up. This way, you can have a more definitive measurement of how much you need to cut.

With your preparations done, you should be ready to go ahead and install stone veneer over drywall. One important thing to note before you start is that you should not install the stone veneer directly on the drywall.

To put stone veneer over drywall, begin by installing the cement board or backerboard. This is the only way you can safely put stone veneer over drywall. Otherwise, the drywall won’t be able to bear the weight of the stone veneer, which may cause damage to the structure.

Installing the Cement Board

The cement board is not only important for the installation, it’s also crucial for preventing water damage. Even if water seeps and gets trapped into the space between the cement board and the stone veneer, the cement board still won’t be susceptible to mold growth, rotting, or warping.

For wall installations, a half-inch thick cement board is ideal. To install the cement board, lay it on the drywall as you would position it.

Make sure that the entire surface area where the stone veneer will be added is going to be completely covered by the cement board. Cut any corner or irregular sections as needed. A utility knife is enough for the job.

Apply thin-set mortar on the cement board. The good thing about this material is that it dries slowly, which gives you time to adjust the cement board in case it’s necessary. Use a trowel to evenly spread it on the panel.

Once all the panels have been set, secure them with cement board joint tape. Put another layer of mortar to cover the tape and to mud the joints. Drying time may vary, so check the manufacturer’s recommendation.

Install the Stone Veneer

Once the mortar sets and the drywall is firmly in place, you can proceed to installing stone veneer. A good tip to keep in mind is to stagger them when you lay them out for a more natural look.

Stone veneers don’t come in one solid color or tone, which is why it has such a rich texture to its appearance. A staggered layout enhances this feature. You can also cut them into different sizes so that your layout will be consistent all the way through.

Begin laying the tiles or panels row by row. Screw them in place once set. Make sure that the screws you’re using are long enough to pass through the stone veneer, the cement board, the mortar layer, and about a quarter-inch bit into the drywall itself.

If you’re using natural stones, backbutter the stones first to get a smooth, even surface before putting it on the cement board.
