The steps involved in painting a Formica countertop are:

  1. Prepare the countertop to be painted
  2. Tape off the edges
  3. Apply the primer
  4. Apply the first coat of paint
  5. Apply the second coat of paint
  6. Apply the gloss finish

Preparing your Formica countertop to be painted requires removing any imperfections, shown in the video above. After that the surface needs to be sanded using 240 grit sandpaper. This allows the primer to adhere better to the countertop.

After sanding it, wipe the entire surface down with mineral spirits to remove any dust. Wait for the mineral spirits to dry and then run your hand over the entire surface to make sure it’s smooth and there isn’t any dust. Next tape off the areas using painters tape. This includes where the countertop meets the backsplash, around the sink, and anywhere else you don’t want the paint to go. When doing so, make sure the painters tape is completely stuck down.

If paint gets where it shouldn’t it’s a big job to remove it. Also, it’s a good idea to put newspaper or a plastic sheet on the floor and front of the cabinets in case some drips get on it. When applying any of the paint layers, do it all in one go, and don’t pause for more than a small amount of time to refill the roller tray with more paint.

If you allow the paint to dry in between it will create a visible line where you stopped painting. This is known as keeping a wet edge.

Paint as much as you can with a roller, and fill in any areas that it can’t reach using your trim brush. Paint in long even strokes from front to back. Apply one layer of primer and give it 6 hours to dry.
