Nowadays, however, homeowners are looking to update the appearance of their homes and wondering if they can paint over Formica.

In order to achieve the desired look, you will need to prepare the formica before painting. While it may be tempting to skip these steps, they are vital to ensure your painted formica looks stunning for years to come.

The tools and preparation needed to paint over formica include a degreaser, rags, sandpaper, epoxy putty and putty knife, bonding primer, paint roller, and oil-based or water-based paint. The formica will need to be cleaned and sanded before you can begin painting.

To begin, you will need to first clean the Formica with a degreaser, making sure to get rid of all the grease and grime that is on the surface. Then use either 120- or 150-grit sandpaper to scuff up Formica’s glossy appearance. Without this, the paint wouldn’t properly adhere to the surface. Any dings or damage found in the Formica will need to be repaired with an epoxy putty and a putty knife.

Once the putty has dried, clean the surface once again to get rid of any dust and debris. Wait until the Formica has dried completely before beginning. While the Formica is drying, however, you can keep preparing the area by covering items with drop cloths to prevent paint from accidentally getting on their surface. Furthermore, use painter’s tape to cover the trim, which will help give the Formica crisp, sharp lines.

Properly painting over Formica isn’t difficult, but does take certain tools and procedures to ensure you get the desired look from the newly painted surface.

Painting over Formica properly is key to ensuring that the Formica surface not only looks good, but lasts for years to come. Rushing the process or skipping steps will only leave you with lackluster results.

Before beginning, prep the area by cleaning, sanding, and repairing the Formica surface. Always start with a clean surface before painting anything, no matter what it is made from.

Step 1: Cover the area around the Formica you are painting with drop cloths to protect it from drops of paint. Use painter’s tape to ensure you get crisp and clean lines around trim and other edges where you don’t want the paint to touch.

Step 2: Use a foam paint roller to apply the bonding primer over the Formica surface. Make sure to cover the entire area that will be painted. Let the bonding primer dry before continuing.

Step 3: Stir the water-based or oil-based paint for several seconds until it is well mixed. Apply the paint over the Formica using a clean foam paint roller.

Step 4: After you have covered the entire surface with wait, let it start to dry. Remove any painter’s tape that was applied while the paint is still a bit tacky. Avoid removing it immediately after painting or after it has completely dried.
