GE Fridge Water Dispenser Not Working

It is almost a mindless action to go to your GE fridge and get water straight from the dispenser. This small convenience is something that is used dozens of times per day for many GE fridge owners, so what do you do when the water dispenser simply stops working? This may not be a dire issue, but it is certainly one that is invonenient and can also be frustrating to figure out what is causing the problem.

If your GE fridge water dispenser is not working, try determining what is causing the issue. The problem could be due to a frozen water tube in the door, a defective water inlet valve, low water pressure, an issue with the dispenser control board, a defective dispenser switch, a failed door switch, or a clogged water filter. Be sure to examine each of these areas to figure out what exactly is the cause of your problem.

The key to finding a solution to your water dispenser problems within your GE refrigerator is being able to identify exactly where the issue originated. For more general problems, a reset of your water dispenser may be helpful (see below “How Do You Reset a GE Refrigerator Water Filter?”), but it is typically more effective to find the specific area of origin so that you can tailor your solution more specifically.

GE Fridge Won’t Dispense Water

If you find the source of the problem which is causing your GE fridge water dispenser to stop working, you can move forward with more exact solutions to get your water dispenser back into working order. The most primary and basic function of a water dispenser is to do exactly as its title indicates – dispense water. What, then, do you do if you go to grab a glass of water and realize that your water dispenser is no longer dispensing water?

If your GE fridge won’t dispense water, be sure that the water line to the refrigerator is turned on. If the water line is on, then be sure that the cradle of the dispense has been held down for 2-3 minutes, which will allow the reservoir to fill up completely. Once the water has been dispensed, rid the line of any air by dispensing air for about 5 minutes. This will equal out to about 2 gallons of water, which can sometimes take more time.

If you have a GE refrigerator that was just recently installed, there could be the chance that during the installation, the doors were removed. If this is the case, double check that all the wiring is put back in place. To do this, you can refer to your owner’s manual to find exactly where the wiring harness is located on your particular model.

GE Refrigerator Won’t Dispense Water After Replacing Filter

When a GE refrigerator experiences no water flow after replacing the filter, there can be several potential reasons behind the issue. One common cause is improper installation of the replacement water filter. If the filter is not installed correctly, it may not be able to filter water effectively, leading to restricted water flow.

Another possible reason could be air trapped in the water line after installing the new filter. Air bubbles can hinder the flow of water until they are flushed out.

Additionally, a malfunctioning water inlet valve or a clogged water line can also contribute to the problem, preventing water from reaching the dispenser.

To fix the issue of no water flow after replacing the filter in a GE refrigerator, start by ensuring that the correct replacement filter is being used, and it is installed properly. Remove the filter and reinsert it, making sure it fits securely and tightly.

To flush out any trapped air or carbon particles, run water through the filter for a few minutes. If the refrigerator has a water filter indicator light, reset it after installing the new filter.

Additionally, check the water supply line connected to the refrigerator for any kinks, blockages, or loose connections. Ensure that the water supply valve is fully open and that the water inlet valve is functioning correctly. If needed, clean or replace the water inlet valve to restore water flow.

Lastly, inspect the dispenser components for any obstructions or damage that may be hindering the water flow and ensure the dispenser switch is engaging properly when the dispenser lever is pressed.

GE Refrigerator Water Dispenser Not Cold

One of the greatest advantages of having a water dispenser within your GE refrigerator is that the water which comes out is ice cold. This is a huge benefit for those of you who simply cannot stand drinking a glass of lukewarm water from the tap, but is even better for those who come in after a hot day and need a quick cool-down. If you dispense water from your GE refrigerator and notice that the water is not cold, what is the fix?

If your GE refrigerator water dispenser does not produce cold water, this could be an indication that the refrigerator compartment in your fridge is set at a temperature that is too low. To change the temperature of the compartment, find either the temperature knob within your fridge or the electronic temperature pad and turn down the temperature. Allow at least 24 before seeing if the temperature has adjusted.

If you find that your GE refrigerator is set at an appropriate temperature for cold water, the problem of no cold water could stem from the fact that you may have a model that is not equipped with a reservoir tank. This tank holds chilled water in it, therefore, if you pour a half glass of water and notice that the water is not chilled, it is because this is the water that comes from sitting in the line. Continue dispensing water and you should get a cold glass.

GE Refrigerator Water Dispenser Won’t Stop

If you are experiencing problems with your GE refrigerator not dispensing water, this can be a big inconvenience, but it likely does not go beyond that – an inconvenience. However, if you go to get a glass of water from your fridge and the water won’t stop, this can be a recipe for disaster when it comes to keeping water from dripping or gushing onto the floors and causing damage. How do you fix a GE refrigerator that won’t stop dispensing water?

If your GE refrigerator water dispenser won’t stop, it is likely a problem with either the water inlet valve or the water level dispense. To resolve this issue, find the water valve which is located at the back of your refrigerator, then open the water valve and take both plugs from the valve. Once you do this, if the water will still not stop, you need to replace the water valve, but if it does stop, you need to replace the water lever switch.

Another way to test if the valve on your GE refrigerator water dispenser is the issue is to stop power to your fridge. To do this, you will simply unplug your refrigerator directly from the power source and check to see if the water stops. If the water keeps running, it means that the valve is sticking open even when the water dispensing feature is not in use. This then means that the valve will need to be replaced to stop the issue.

GE Refrigerator Water Dispenser Keeps Freezing

You may have no trouble with your GE water dispenser actually doing as it should – dispensing water. However, some owners have found that, over time, their water dispenser continues to freeze which actually ends up causing you trouble that you never encountered before. This can occur slowly as you see that your water is more slowly dispensing, or it can be an out-of-the-blue issue that happens after a long period of time with no use.

If your GE refrigerator water dispenser keeps freezing, it is likely that the internal temperature of your refrigerator is set to a temperature that is too high. To lower the temperature of your refrigerator find the control knob or electrical control with your freezer and decrease the temperature to a more moderate range (such as 5). Once this has been adjusted, allow 24 hours for the effect to take place.

If the problem of your GE refrigerator is not one that includes a constant stream of water that will not cease, you may think that you are out of the woods as far as issues go. However, if you have a water dispenser that is constantly dripping or leaking, this can cause the water to overflow onto your floor in a slower manner, but one that can be still as damaging. If your water dispenser is dripping or leaking, read below to find the solution.

If your GE refrigerator water dispenser is dripping or leaking, it may be that the vinyl tubing which dispenses water needs replacing. This can be due to either cracking or splitting within the tube, which can be the reason that your water dispenser is constantly secreting water at a low rate. To remedy this problem, all you will need to do is replace the damaged vinyl tubing and the leaking will cease.

If you find that the vinyl tubing is not causing the problem of your GE refrigerator constantly leaking, it could be that the water pressure to your refrigerator is too high. To remedy this issue, it will depend on the household and the experience that you have with such problems. However, if you are unsure of how to adjust the water pressure which goes directly to your fridge, be sure to call a professional so that you can ensure no extra damage is done.

GE Refrigerator Water Dispenser Slow

Of course, it can be problematic when you find that your GE water dispenser is leaking, will not stop flowing, is not coming out cold, or is generally not working. To add to this list, some owners of GE refrigerators have found problems with the rate at which water is dispensed from their refrigerators. Not only should your water dispenser offer convenience, but it should also offer the ability to quickly fill your glass or pitcher without too much wait time.

If your GE refrigerator water dispenser is slow, this could be due to a clogged or partially clogged filter. The filter on your GE refrigerator should be replaced every 6 months, so if you have not replaced a filter within this timespan, it is likely that a clogged filter is the culprit. To confirm this problem, remove the filter and install the bypass plug and if it works, the filter needs to be replaced.

The bypass plug should have been supplied with your refrigerator, but if you cannot find the plug or you purchased a used GE refrigerator, you can easily order one with no charge by calling GE appliances to order this particular part. If you are in an area of new construction, sediment could be more prolific in your water, which can cause your filter to clog quicker, making it necessary to change your filter more frequently than every 6 months.

How to Clean GE Refrigerator Water Dispenser

Hands cleaning refrigerator door

For most owners of a GE refrigerator, one of the most used features of their appliance is the water dispenser. With so much use, it is inevitable that the dispenser itself may get a bit dirty over time, which is a completely natural occurrence. If you are using the water dispenser on your GE refrigerator often, you may decide that it is time for a good cleaning to occur, but how do you go about this?

To clean your GE refrigerator water dispenser, you will first take out the dispenser spill shelf by lifting it out of the spill shelf compartment. Once you have this removed, fill a container with undiluted vinegar and place the spill shelf into the container of vinegar while allowing it to soak for around about half an hour. You will then remove the spill shelf from the container and dry any deposits with a cloth.

Once the spill shelf has been properly cleaned, you will wipe the area behind the class cradle with a paper towel that is diluted with any cleaning solution. Give the area a total drying before proceeding to take off the soft touch dispenser off the back of the dispenser area and put the dispenser pad in the sink with warm water and dish soap. Then rinse and dry the dispenser pad well before reinstalling.
