Hotpoint Washer Not Working

Sometimes the issues we have with our washing machines are easy to diagnose. We used too much detergent. We used the wrong detergent. We put too many clothes in the washer. Other times, though, the issue can be a little more difficult to diagnose.

If your Hotpoint washer is not working, make sure the lid is locking when closed. Check for any objects that could have become lodged between the washer tub and basket. Reduce the number of items being washed at a time. Make sure the washing machine is receiving adequate power.

Woman sitting behind the laundry

It is never a good feeling when you open the lid to your washing machine and discover your clothes are still sitting in a pool of water. There is no one clear answer to why this is happening, but this article will help point you in the right direction so the problem can be resolved quickly.

Hotpoint Washer Not Spinning

The spinning feature on every washing machine is what distributes the water throughout the load and it is then removed outside the washer. Without this cycle, we would always have a tub full of water and soaked clothes.

If your Hotpoint washer is not spinning, make sure the door and lock switches are engaged. These switches are safety features that prevent the spin cycle from starting. Some washing machines will beep or you will hear an audible locking sound when the door and lock are engaged.

If the door and lock switches are engaged but the spin cycle is still not starring, here are a few more possible reasons why.

Uneven Load

An oversized or unbalanced load can prevent the washing machine from spinning. If large, bulky items are washed with smaller, lighter items, the bulkier items will put a great strain on the drum’s ability to spin.

The washing machine will try to achieve balance by shaking the drum, but if it is unsuccessful, the washing machine will stop spinning altogether. You will need to open the lid and manually redistribute the load.

Check Power Source

As we just mentioned, when a load is unbalanced, the washing machine itself will try to readjust the load. We have all heard this happen – the washing machine drum rocks back and forth violently and loudly.

When the washing machine has rocked itself back to the wall, it is possible that in the process the power cord has become knocked loose. Securely insert the power cord back into the outlet and, if possible, reposition the washing machine further away from the outlet.

Hotpoint Washer Not Draining

Before the washing machine can begin the spin cycle, it must first drain all the water out of the drum. If your laundry is still sitting in a pool of water, here are some possible reasons why.

If your Hotpoint washer is not draining, switch to a High Efficiency detergent. Other detergents create a high amount of suds that can cause the sensors to detect the drum is too full. This will result in the machine not reaching an adequate spin cycle and water will remain in the drum.

Drive Belt

The drive belt is looped around the motor drive pulley and the agitator drive shaft. Over time the belt will wear out, becoming loose or even breaking. When the belt is defective, the drain pump is unable to remove water from the washing machine.

You will often hear squealing or squeaking noises as the belt breaks down. You may even smell burning rubber.

Drain Pump

The drain pump can become clogged or obstructed by small items that were left in clothing pockets, by smaller clothing items, even hair. If the drain is blocked, the washing machine will be noisy during the drain cycle.

Remove the drain to inspect for any obstructions. If there are no obstructions, the pump will need to be replaced.

Drain Hose

The drain hose is how water inside the washing machine is drained out. Check the hose for any kinks, twisting, or bending. Make sure the hose is straight and is free of any obstructions.

Water Pump Belt

Some older Hotpoint washing machine models have a water pump belt. The belt connects the washing machine motor to the water pump. If the belt is loose or broken, the washer will not drain.

Consult your owner’s manual or do a quick Google search of your Hotpoint washing machine model to determine if your washer has a water pump belt.

Clogged Coin Trap

This, too, is a feature on a few Hotpoint models. The coin trap collects small objects before they enter the drain. If the trap becomes clogged, the washer cannot drain properly. Removing the trap and cleaning it will resolve the issue.

Select Cycle Setting

When the ‘Crease Care’ or ‘Rinse Hold’ setting is selected, these settings will cause the water from the final rinse to be held in the drum. If you are unsure if this setting has been selected, unplug the washer from its power source to reset the machine and then select ‘Drain Cycle’ to remove the collected water.

Hotpoint Washer Not Agitating

The agitation cycle of a washing machine is what really gets our laundry clean. The agitation creates the scrubbing action needed for the detergent to do its job. If the agitation cycle is not working properly, your laundry is not the cleanest it could be.

If your Hotpoint washer is not agitating, the drive motor may need to be replaced. The drive motor is what enables the washing machine drum to fill with water, agitate, spin, and drain. A qualified service technician can replace the drive motor.

The agitator is made up of several small components that enable it to work properly. If you are able to easily rotate the agitator by hand, the cogs that allow the agitator to rotate need to be replaced.

Agitator Cogs

The agitator cogs are located at the bottom of the agitator and are what give the agitator its mobility. If the cogs are broken, the agitator will not work.

Motor Coupling

The motor coupling connects the motor to the transmission. If the washer is overloaded, the coupling will sacrifice itself to protect the motor and transmission. Normal wear can also cause the coupling to fail.

Transmission

The transmission in a washing machine has an assembly of gears and pulleys that allow it to turn the drum and help transition the washer through its cycles. The transmission will make a whining noise if it is going bad.

Another indicator the transmission is failing is if you smell a burning odor. When the bearings in the transmission fail, the friction created by the motor and drum will create a burning smell.

Hotpoint Washer Not Starting

Few things in life are more frustrating than when you go to the washer, open the door, and see that the washing machine never started.

If your Hotpoint washer is not starting, the timer knob could be the culprit. If the knob has recently been removed, the knob may have been replaced incorrectly and the setting you chose is not what the knob is set to.

When examining the timer knob, make sure the knob is replaced securely back on the metal switch. If the knob is not able to make a connection with the starter switch, no signals will be sent to start the wash cycle.

Main Control Board

Another possibility for why your Hotpoint washing machine is not starting is the display panel could be defective. A defective display panel is not able to send electrical signals to the selected wash cycle. A qualified service technician can diagnose and replace the control board.

Thermal Fuse

This is another safety feature of the Hotpoint washing machine. In the event the washer overheats, the fuse will blow so the washer loses power immediately. The fuse will only blow one time and then must be replaced.

If the fuse has been blown, it is important to investigate the problem further to determine why the fuse blew. There could be an electrical error that needs further investigation.

Power Supply

The power outlet the washer is connected to may not be receiving sufficient power to run the washer. Plug the washer into another outlet or test the outlet with another item to see if the outlet is receiving power.

Inspect the power cord for any damage or fraying. Do not use tape to cover the damage. Power cords must be replaced. Not replacing the cord is a dangerous fire hazard.

Door Lock

Another added safety feature to the Hotpoint washing machine is the door lock. The washer will not start if the door is not securely locked. The lock could be defective due to electrical or mechanical reasons.

Hotpoint Washer Not Filling

A washing machine is not very useful if it cannot fill with water. The first place to start troubleshooting this issue is the water inlet valve.

The water inlet valve is what allows water into the washing machine. If the valve is not open enough to allow sufficient water pressure through the line, the water will not reach the washing machine.

If your Hotpoint washer is not filling, check the fill hose and screen. If the hose is kinked or pinched, water will not reach the washing machine. A clogged fill screen can also impede water flow. Remove and dirt, debris, or hard water build-up from the screen.
