Hotpoint Washer Flashing Lights (How to Fix)

Some Hotpoint washers have very complex control panels, but all Hotpoint washers have a fill, soak, wash, rinse, and spin light. These can be called something different such as pre-wash instead of fill, however, in some cases one of the lights on your Hotpoint washer can be blinking or all of the lights all at once. Today, I will cover what it means when one or all of the lights on your Hotpoint washer are flashing, and how to fix it.

Overall, if all the lights are flashing, restart your washer by unplugging it at the wall and plugging it back in again. If all the lights continue to flashing the onboard computer has failed and needs to be repaired or replaced. For a single flashing light refer to the instructions below.

For a single light it indicates a specific issue, such as water not entering the tub, or the load is out of balance. There is a helpful table below that shows what it means for each of the single lights, such as the wash light, or spin light. As well as, videos that show exactly what to do to fix it.

Hotpoint Washer Flashing Lights (How to Fix)

When a Hotpoint washer is working normally it won’t have any flashing lights, but will show a solid light on the control board to indicate what part of the cycle it is on. If a light is flashing, or multiple lights are flashing it is an inbuilt feature of Hotpoint washers to tell you that there is a problem. Here is what it means if your Hotpoint washer has flashing lights.

In general, for multiple lights flashing all at once first inspect the water filter (front loading washers only), otherwise, a repair technician will need to fix it, because the internal computer has failed. For a single flashing light such as the spin light refer to the steps below for how to fix it.

Each type of single flashing light means something different. If it’s the:

How to fix it

All lights. and stopping mid cycle

Water filter is clogged and needs to be cleaned (front loading washers only)

All lights. and won’t let you press any buttons

Onboard computer has failed. Requires a repair technician to replace the onboard computer. Try restarting it first.

Load is out of balance or overloaded. Take some clothes out, or move the clothes so they are evenly spaced out inside the tub on your washer.

Issue with water getting into your washer.

Check the water hoses at the rear of your washer aren’t damaged.

Check the water supply from your home’s plumbing.

Check the water inlet filter screens – located where the water inlet hoses at the rear of your washer screw into the back of your washer.

Lid lock light

Open the lid and close it again. This happens if 3 cycles are run back to back, without opening the lid.

1. How to inspect and clean the water filter (front loading washers only)

Here’s a video that shows how to clean and inspect the water filter on a Hotpoint washer, which you should do if all the lights are flashing.

2. Restart your Hotpoint washer (all lights flashing)

If the water filter is fine and all the lights are still flashing then it’s an issue with the onboard computer. You can repair or replace it yourself, however, it is very difficult unless you have some experience working with electronics, or repairing appliances. Therefore, you do need a repair technician to repair this issue.

Before doing that it’s a good idea to try resetting your Hotpoint washer. To do that, unplug your Hotpoint washer at the wall outlet, wait about 10 seconds, then plug it back i. If all the lights are still flashing it’s an issue with the onboard computer on your Hotpoint washer.

It’s possible the repair is covered under warranty. Therefore, you should contact Hotpoint support. In some cases the cost of repair is more than the cost of replacing the entire washer.

Especially if the washer is quite old. So, you may decide it’s better to buy a whole new washer, rather than repair the onboard computer.

3. Single solid light flashing – what each of them mean

If there is a single solid light, it is showing what part of a wash cycle our Hotpoint washer is on.

Spin light is flashing – load is out of balance

When the spin light is flashing it’s pretty straightforward to fix. Simply take out about a third of the load or more.

If the load is quite small it’s possible they all got bunched up on one side by accident and the tub is having a hard time staying in the center. Rearrange the clothes so that they are evenly distributed in the tub.

Fill, wash, or pre-wash light is flashing – issue with water entering your washer

If the fill light is flashing it requires a bit more work to fix. The two things that need to be checked are:

  • The water inlet hoses at the rear of your Hotpoint washer
  • The water inlet filter screens

There are generally two hoses at the rear of a Hotpoint washer, one for hot water and one for cold water. These can have a leak or it somehow got kinked, and therefore water can’t flow into your washer. You may be able to inspect these to see if you can see any signs that they are leaking. Or, if there is a bend in them.

In rare cases the plumbing in your home is not supplying water. So if the water hoses look fine it’s a good idea to disconnect them from the valves at the wall where they connect to the plumbing in your home, and test that the water supply from your plumbing is providing water. Where the water hoses connect at the back of a Hotpoint washer there are small screens about ½ an inch (1.25 cm) in diameter.

Over time these can accumulate sediment from the water, or hard water deposits. When this happens water can’t flow into a washer fast enough or at all. They can be inspected and cleaned or replaced yourself.

Reasons Why Hotpoint Washer Flashing Lights

Modern two washer

There are a few issues that can cause a Hotpoint washer to not work properly. When this happens Hotpoint washers have an inbuilt feature where one or all of the lights will flash. Below is why your Hotpoint washer has flashing lights.

As a general rule, if multiple lights are flashing all at once either the water filter is clogged and needs to be cleared, or the internal computer has failed, and needs to be repaired or replaced by a repair technician. If only one of the lights are flashing, refer to the info below about what it means.

If it’s the:

  • Spin light – the load is out of balance or overloaded. Take some clothes out or rearrange them so they are even distributed
  • Fill light (also sometimes labeled as pre-wash) – There is an issue with water entering the tub. Inspect the water supply lines, and filter inlet screens.
  • Lid lock light – 3 consecutive cycles have been done without opening the lid. Open the lid and close it again to stop it flashing.

Do the fix based on which light is flashing. I have provided full step by step instructions for each of the issues a bit further up in this article.
