Soft Reset

There are two ways to perform a soft reset of the HP Deskjet printer. The first way is by simply disconnecting the printer from its power source for at least 60 seconds.

It is important to let the printer rest without power so it can clear out any stuck commands or other software bugs. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in and run a test page.

Another way to perform a soft reset is by doing the following:

Step 1: Turn the printer on.

Step 2: Press the Power button and the Cancel button at the same time.

Step 3: Release the Cancel button first.

How To Reset Ink Cartridge Levels For An HP Deskjet Printer

White printer on the desk

You refilled your ink cartridges and now you’re ready to start printing. You turn the printer and are greeted with the dreaded ink cartridge empty light. How can you reset the ink cartridge levels for a HP Deskjet printer?

You can reset the ink cartridge levels for a HP Deskjet printer by pressing and holding the Power button while you press and hold the Cancel button. Hold both buttons down for 3 seconds. The ink cartridge level light will be reset back to full.

Sometimes the issue we are having with our printer has nothing to do with the printer itself. The printer may have trouble recognizing the ink cartridges because there is something wrong with the cartridges.

For example, if the cartridges were not replaced correctly, the printer will not recognize that they are there, let alone that they are full. Remove the ink cartridges and then reinsert them. You should hear them click into place.

Another possibility could be if the ink cartridge contacts are dirty. If ink, dust, or other debris is covering the contacts, this will prevent the printer and cartridges from recognizing each other.

Clean the contacts and the printer head with an alcohol wipe. Alcohol will easily remove any debris and will also evaporate quickly so there’s no risk of moisture getting into the printer.

Printer Memory

HP printers can sometimes remember an empty cartridge. The printer will recognize the cartridge as having been empty and will not acknowledge that it is now full.

You can get around this problem by using an old, empty cartridge to make the printer recognize a truly empty cartridge. Insert the empty cartridge. Once you get the default message, replace the old cartridge with the fresh one.

The printer should now recognize the “new” cartridge and the error message will clear out. You can now run a test page to make sure everything is working correctly.
