Maytag Microwave Not Working (How To Fix/Reset)

Maytag make many different appliances and microwaves. Microwaves typically work perfectly fine for long periods of time but, every now and then they can have an issue. In this article, I will explain how to fix a Maytag microwave that isn’t working.

As a general rule, first check the wall outlet is getting power. Plug a different device into the wall outlet and see if it’s getting power. If not, check the circuit breaker at the switchboard. The other reasons are, the door is not closed, the control lock or demo mode is on.

Maytag recommends only having their microwaves repaired by a qualified technician. The reason is microwaves have large amounts of electricity running through them, and if an error is made it can be a big issue. But, there are a range of steps you can take that can fix the issue before having a repair technician repair it for you, below I will cover what these are.

Maytag Microwave Not Working (How To Fix/Reset)

A common issue which is quite easy to troubleshoot is your Maytag microwave won’t work at all. To solve this issue here’s what causes it, and some steps you can take to fix it.

In general, verify that the wall outlet is supplying power by plugging in a different device into the same wall outlet. There can be packaging spacers on the door that stop it from closing completely, or the door is not completely shut. Also, demo mode or the control lock can be on.

If the wall outlet you’re using isn’t providing any power the circuit breaker has likely been tripped into the off position at your switchboard. Inspect your switchboard and turn it back on if necessary. If it’s not that, then there is an issue with the internal wiring in your home.

In the meantime you can operate your Maytag microwave on a different wall outlet. Visually inspect the door hinge and latch to make sure there isn’t anything stopping the door from closing completely. Then close the door completely.

Turning the control lock on and off

The control lock is turned on and off by holding the control lock button on your keypad for 3 seconds. On some models it can be turned on and off using the ‘Options’ button. Underneath the options button it will say ‘control lock on/off’.

Turning it on and off using the options button is done in the same way, hold it down for 3 seconds. When the control lock is on, and press any of the keys on the keypad the LCD display will flash and say ‘control lock activated’.

Turning off demo mode on your Maytag microwave

Demo mode is set when microwaves are on display so that people testing them out can turn the microwave on which can damage the microwave, when there’s nothing in it. To turn it off:

  1. Open the door of your Maytag microwave and keep it open
  2. Hold down the number 3 on the keypad for 5 seconds. The LCD display will show a letter ‘d’.
  3. It will give you 5 seconds to turn it off, before it reverts back to demo mode.
  4. To turn demo mode off press the start button within 5 seconds.
  5. The LCD display will say dOff, to say that demo mode has been turned off.

Here’s a video from Maytag where they show how to do it:

Generally, there is something stuck in the door hinge, or the latch is broken and needs to be repaired. On new Maytag microwaves there are spacers in the door hinge that need to be removed. The food dish in your microwave can be too large, and you need to use something smaller.

The door can be slightly stuck if it’s bumping up against the dish of food. Visually inspect the inside of the door hinge to see if something is stuck there and stopping it from closing. Also visually inspect the closing mechanism.

Both, on the door, and on the microwave here it clicks into. But, don’t tinker with it or clean it without first unplugging your microwave from the wall. Typically, the door will give a reassuring click when it closes.

If it doesn’t or you’ve tried all of the above, then it’s likely the door latch or where it clicks into are damaged and need to be repaired or replaced. With the microwave unplugged you can slightly jigger the closing mechanism to see if it’s slightly out of place. Otherwise, contact Maytag support to organize a repair technician to repair the latch on your microwave.

The exact method to turn the volume up can differ from model to model. Therefore, if the steps above don’t work, then refer to your owners manual.
