Maytag make many different appliances and microwaves. Microwaves typically work perfectly fine for long periods of time but, every now and then they can have an issue. In this article, I will explain how to fix a Maytag microwave that isn’t working.
As a general rule, first check the wall outlet is getting power. Plug a different device into the wall outlet and see if it’s getting power. If not, check the circuit breaker at the switchboard. The other reasons are, the door is not closed, the control lock or demo mode is on.
Maytag recommends only having their microwaves repaired by a qualified technician. The reason is microwaves have large amounts of electricity running through them, and if an error is made it can be a big issue. But, there are a range of steps you can take that can fix the issue before having a repair technician repair it for you, below I will cover what these are.
Maytag Microwave Not Working (How To Fix/Reset)
A common issue which is quite easy to troubleshoot is your Maytag microwave won’t work at all. To solve this issue here’s what causes it, and some steps you can take to fix it.
In general, verify that the wall outlet is supplying power by plugging in a different device into the same wall outlet. There can be packaging spacers on the door that stop it from closing completely, or the door is not completely shut. Also, demo mode or the control lock can be on.
If the wall outlet you’re using isn’t providing any power the circuit breaker has likely been tripped into the off position at your switchboard. Inspect your switchboard and turn it back on if necessary. If it’s not that, then there is an issue with the internal wiring in your home.
In the meantime you can operate your Maytag microwave on a different wall outlet. Visually inspect the door hinge and latch to make sure there isn’t anything stopping the door from closing completely. Then close the door completely.
Turning the control lock on and off
The control lock is turned on and off by holding the control lock button on your keypad for 3 seconds. On some models it can be turned on and off using the ‘Options’ button. Underneath the options button it will say ‘control lock on/off’.
Turning it on and off using the options button is done in the same way, hold it down for 3 seconds. When the control lock is on, and press any of the keys on the keypad the LCD display will flash and say ‘control lock activated’.
Turning off demo mode on your Maytag microwave
Demo mode is set when microwaves are on display so that people testing them out can turn the microwave on which can damage the microwave, when there’s nothing in it. To turn it off:
- Open the door of your Maytag microwave and keep it open
- Hold down the number 3 on the keypad for 5 seconds. The LCD display will show a letter ‘d’.
- It will give you 5 seconds to turn it off, before it reverts back to demo mode.
- To turn demo mode off press the start button within 5 seconds.
- The LCD display will say dOff, to say that demo mode has been turned off.
Here’s a video from Maytag where they show how to do it:
Maytag Microwave Not Heating
Food and drinks that are already refrigerated or frozen take some time to heat up. But, also large quantities of liquids or food also take a long time. In some cases your Maytag microwave won’t heat at all, when this happens here’s what you should do.
Overall, first do a test by heating up a glass of water for 2 minutes. If it doesn’t change temperature at all your Maytag microwave is faulty and needs to be repaired by a qualified technician. It can often be covered by the 10 year warranty.
If it heats up but not that hot, then your Maytag microwave can be set too low by default. Maytag microwaves are automatically set to high, which is also 100% power.
The power level is set after you put in the cook time.
Maytag Microwave Not Starting
Ordinarily to use your Maytag microwave you press cook time, then input how long you want it to cook for and then press start. Your Maytag microwave can be set so that it won’t start, or there can be another issue causing it not to start. This is a summary of what causes this to happen and how to get your Maytag microwave to start.
As a general rule, the control lock or demo mode can be on. These need to be disabled, explained below. If it’s neither of these then check that the door is completely closed. New Maytag microwaves have spacers on the door hinge that need to be removed.
Instructions for how to turn off the control lock, and disable demo mode are explained near the top of the article under the headings ‘turn off control lock’, and ‘turn off demo mode’. Scroll to the top of this article and do those steps first. If it’s not that then your Maytag microwave can not be registering that the door is closed.

And therefore it won’t start as a safety feature. Open the door and inspect the hinge of the door, the latch on the door, and where the latch clips into your microwave. It’s common for pieces of food to be stuck in the door hinge or the closing mechanism.
It can also accumulate debris over time and needs to be cleaned. But, before touching the closing mechanism, unplug your Maytag microwave. If it’s neither of these, then there is an
Maytag Microwave Not Closing
The door needs to be completely closed for a Maytag microwave to operate. There are a few issues why your Maytag microwave is not closing. Here’s what they are, and how to get your Maytag microwave to close completely.
Generally, there is something stuck in the door hinge, or the latch is broken and needs to be repaired. On new Maytag microwaves there are spacers in the door hinge that need to be removed. The food dish in your microwave can be too large, and you need to use something smaller.
The door can be slightly stuck if it’s bumping up against the dish of food. Visually inspect the inside of the door hinge to see if something is stuck there and stopping it from closing. Also visually inspect the closing mechanism.
Both, on the door, and on the microwave here it clicks into. But, don’t tinker with it or clean it without first unplugging your microwave from the wall. Typically, the door will give a reassuring click when it closes.
If it doesn’t or you’ve tried all of the above, then it’s likely the door latch or where it clicks into are damaged and need to be repaired or replaced. With the microwave unplugged you can slightly jigger the closing mechanism to see if it’s slightly out of place. Otherwise, contact Maytag support to organize a repair technician to repair the latch on your microwave.
Maytag Microwave Not Beeping
After the cook timer has finished, and when you press the buttons on the LCD screen of your Maytag microwave it will beep by default. It can still operate without beeping, or nothing happens when you press any of the buttons. This is how to get your Maytag microwave to start beeping again.
Overall, either the speaker has blown and needs to be replaced or the sound has been turned off or down, and it needs to be turned up or turned back on. To turn the sound on and off hold down the number ‘2’ on the keypad until you hear a double beep. Turning the volume up is explained below.
The exact method to turn the volume up can differ from model to model. Therefore, if the steps above don’t work, then refer to your owners manual.
There are online versions of the manuals which can be accessed on this page of the official Maytag website. It also has instructions for how to find your model number so you can find the exact user manual for your Maytag microwave.
Maytag Microwave Not Spinning
A Maytag microwave can still heat food and drinks without the turntable spinning. But, it heats the food more evenly if it does, and is part of the normal operation of your Maytag microwave. If the turntable on your Maytag microwave isn’t spinning, this is what causes this to happen, and how to get it to work.
Generally, the turntable has come off the ring and the turning mechanism underneath. This commonly happens when the turntable is removed to be cleaned. Make sure the grooves on the bottom of the turntable are sitting in the turning mechanism at the bottom of your microwave.
There is also a ring that has wheels on it that sits underneath the turntable. This can have come slightly out of the grooves. When the turning mechanism underneath spins the ring will stay put. And your turntable won’t spin.
Lift out the plate, and make sure the ring is positioned in the track that the wheels should be on. Then replace the turntable onto the ring. When you do, be sure to make sure the teeth on the on turning mechanism are fitting into the teeth on the underside of the plate.
If the ring, and turntable are positioned correctly but it’s still not spinning the spinning mechanism at the base of your microwave can be faulty, and needs to be repaired or replaced. Contact Maytag support to have this done.
Maytag Microwave Display Not Working
The LCD display on a Maytag microwave is required to operate it. It can have an issue where nothing happens when you press the buttons, or it won’t light up at all. To solve these issues, here’s the steps you should take.
Typically, the control lock is on and needs to be disabled, or it’s in demo mode. If the display does not light up at all then it may not be getting power. Try plugging a different device into the same wall outlet your microwave is plugged into. Additional steps are explained below.
If you plug in another device to the same wall outlet and it also doesn’t turn on, the wall outlet isn’t getting any power. The circuit breaker for the area of your house where your microwave is can be blown. And the circuit breaker is in the off position.
Go to your switch board and turn it back on again. Or, use your microwave in a different working outlet in the meantime. To turn off the control lock, refer to the instructions near the top of this article under the heading that says ‘turning the control lock off’. Underneath that heading are also the instructions for how to disable demo mode.

Unplug your Maytag microwave first so that no power is going to it. Then you can gently jigger the latch on the door, and where the latch clicks into the microwave. It can be slightly out of place if the door was accidentally closed too hard.
The latch can also have a build up of grime that needs to be removed. When cleaning it don’t get any water into either mechanism.
It’s best to use a very damp cloth to clean. And as a reminder, it’s very important to have your Maytag microwave unplugged when doing so.

Provided, the LCD display and your fingers are dry, the other issue it can be is if the door is not closed completely, or there is a fault with the LCD screen. Open and close the door, and if it’s still not working contact Maytag support to have it repaired. It’s possible it’s covered under warranty.
Maytag Microwave Fan Not Working
The internal fan keeps the components and the interior of your microwave cool. If your Maytag microwave gets too hot it can damage your microwave. Here’s how to fix your Maytag microwave fan when it’s not working.
Generally, this is a fault with an internal component on your Maytag microwave and needs to be repaired by a qualified technician. But, the fan isn’t on 100% of the time. It only turns on when the internal thermostat registers that it’s above a certain temperature.
But, if it never works, and you never hear it run, it’s worthwhile resetting your Maytag microwave. To do that disconnect it from the wall outlet and then plug it back. Monitor whether the fan comes on every now and then.
And if you’re sure it’s not working then get in touch with Maytag support to have it repaired. Many faults are covered under the 10 year manufacturers warranty.

In some cases everytime you go to use your Maytag microwave or when it’s plugged in it will cause the circuit breaker for that part of the house to click into the off position, or blow completely. Depending on the type of switchboard you have. This is what causes this to happen, and how to stop it from recurring.
In general, this occurs because there are too many appliances, or devices plugged into the same area that your Maytag microwave is plugged into. It draws too much power and blows the fuse. Otherwise, there can be a fault with either the internal wiring in your home, or the microwave.
If you have a lot of appliances plugged in near your Maytag microwave such as a laptop, then move one or a few of them to a different wall outlet. If the fuse still blows when you use your microwave there are two possible reasons. The first is that there’s an internal issue with your microwave and it needs to be repaired.
The other is the internal wiring in your home has an issue and an electrician needs to repair it. It’s up to you to decide which you think is more likely the issue.

When there are too many appliances plugged into the same wall outlet your Maytag microwave can not be able to draw enough power. This is particularly the case if it shuts off when you’re cooking/heating something with it. It can also indicate that there is an issue with the internal wiring in your house, which needs to be repaired by an electrician.
It’s helpful to isolate this issue by taking your microwave to another part of the house, and see if the problem keeps happening. If it does then it’s either a fault with your microwave, or with the wiring in your home.
If all of the other appliances work just fine then it’s your microwave. You should get in touch with Maytag to have it repaired, and see if the repair is covered under the 10 year manufacturers warranty.
