In some cases, a Miele dishwasher will turn on, but it won’t start. Below, I will cover the reasons why a Miele dishwasher won’t turn on, and instructions about how to get it to turn on and start.

Miele Dishwasher Not Turning On (How to Fix)

Provided your Miele dishwasher is plugged to the wall outlet you should be able to select and start a cycle. But, if there is nothing showing on the LCD display or it won’t start when you press the on button, then here is what you should do.

As a general rule, first ensure your Miele dishwasher is getting power from the wall outlet, and press the ‘on’ button. Check it’s plugged in, and that the wall outlet is supplying power by plugging a different device into the same wall outlet. After that, do the steps below.

If the LCD display lights up, or there are LED lights that are blinking or solid, then it means your Miele dishwasher is getting power. Therefore, you either need to press the ‘on’ button. Or, an internal component has failed and needs to be repaired or replaced. The on button is clearly labeled and easy to find.

There are a few reasons why a Miele dishwasher won’t turn on. The good news is they are all easy to check yourself, and unless there is a fault with one of the internal components on your Miele dishwasher you should be able to get it working again yourself very quickly. Here are the reasons why a Miele dishwasher won’t turn on.

Overall, either the wall outlet is not supplying power, or you have not pressed the ‘on’ button. Start by ensuring the wall outlet is supplying power by something else into the same wall outlet. If the wall outlet is supplying power, locate and press the ‘on’ button. Otherwise, contact Miele support.

If you try these steps your Miele dishwasher still won’t turn on, then it’s because one of the internal components has failed. Here are each of the steps in detail.

1. No power is getting your Miele dishwasher

If there is no power getting to your Miele washer it won’t be able to turn on. It’s common for the fuse at the switchboard in your home to have blown due to a power surge. As a result, the wall outlet is not supplying power.

First, ensure your Miele dishwasher is plugged in. If it’s been working previously then this is very likely not the issue. Therefore, you check the switchboard in your home to see if the fuse has been tripped.

Another way to check it is to plug another device or appliance into the same wall outlet. This will tell you that the wall outlet is supplying power.

2. The ‘on’ button needs to be pressed

Many Miele dishwasher models have an ‘on’ button. For a Miele dishwasher to be on, this button needs to be pressed. If your Miele dishwasher has an LCD screen then you can see if that has worked because the lights will come on, on your Miele dishwasher.

If your Miele dishwasher does not have an LCD display you won’t know if that has fixed it unless you select a cycle, and press start. So, do this after pressing the ‘on’ button if your Miele dishwasher does not have an LCD screen, or any LED lights.

Reasons Why Miele Dishwasher Won’t Start

According to Miele there are a few reasons why your Miele dishwasher won’t start. Here are the reasons why a Miele dishwasher won’t start, and how to get it to start.

Generally, there is no power coming from the wall outlet, the door isn’t completely closed, the ‘on’ button needs to be pressed, a program has not been selected, the water softener reactivation program needs to run, or there is no water supply to your dishwasher.

Here are each of the reasons why a Miele dishwasher won’t start, and detailed instructions for each step. Do each of them one by one, until you identify what was causing your Miele dishwasher to not start.

1. No power from the wall outlet to your Miele dishwasher

A wall outlet can be causing the issue because it’s not supplying power to your Miele dishwasher. Either, the plug has come loose, or the fuse at the circuit board for your home has switched into the off position because of a power surge. First, ensure your Miele dishwasher is plugged in, after that inspect the switchboard in your home to see if the fuse has blown.

2. Door is not closed all the way

For a Miele dishwasher to start when you press the start button the door needs to be closed completely. It’s common for the door to not be closed all the way. Therefore, you should open the door, and then close it again.

Ensuring that it has a reassuring click. If you don’t need to press the handle to pull your dishwasher door open again, the door is not properly, or the door latch is broken.

If you suspect the door latch is broken or can see that it is broken then it typically needs a repair technician. Before calling a repair technician try the other steps below.

3. The ‘on’ button needs to be pressed

However, if it does not have an LCD screen, it may already be on, and if you press the on button, it will turn it off. Keep this in mind when trying the other steps below, such as ensuring you select a wash cycle. Try pressing the on button once, and then doing the steps below, and if it doesn’t work try pressing the on button a second time to make sure you haven’t turned it off when you were trying this step.

4. A program has not been selected

In order for most Miele dishwashers to start a wash cycle needs to be selected. After a wash cycle has been selected you need to press ‘OK’. If this has not been done your Miele dishwasher will not start.

Therefore, first select a cycle. On most Miele dishwashers you can cycle through the different cycles using the arrow keys on the control panel, and then select ‘ok’ on the far right of the control panel. Try this, and if it still doesn’t start do the step below.

3. Water softener reactivation program needs to run

According to the official Miele website, a Miele dishwasher will not start if the water softener reactivation program needs to run. If it does need to run there will be no indication on your Miele dishwasher. When it needs to run your Miele dishwasher will take 10 minutes before it will start.

Therefore, if you turn it on, select a cycle, and it doesn’t start, you might try turning it off again. So, when you turn it on, select a cycle, and press start, wait for 10 to 15 minutes then see if it starts by itself.

5. No water supply from the water inlet hose connected to your plumbing

There is a water inlet hose that goes from your home plumbing to your dishwasher. If there is an issue with this water supply, hose water won’t enter your Miele dishwasher, and it will not run, or won’t start at all. It’s possible there is a leak in the water inlet hose.

Refer to this video that shows how a Miele dishwasher connects to the water supply. It will show you where to look if there is an issue with the water supply to your dishwasher:

6. Clog in garbage disposer

If your home has a garbage disposer it’s common for the waste water hose from a dishwasher to be connected to the garbage disposer. If there is a clog in the garbage disposer, it will cause a fault on a Miele dishwasher. There is also a plug that is installed on new garbage disposers.

It’s common that a dishwasher will be connected to a garbage disposer but the plug has not been removed. When this happens a dishwasher won’t start. First, check that your garbage disposer is working correctly.

Also, if it was recently clogged, and was cleared your Miele dishwasher may need to be restarted. You restart your Miele dishwasher by unplugging it from the wall outlet, and plugging it back in again.

7. Another error code is showing on the LCD display

There are many different components in a dishwasher. When one of these has failed, or there is an issue such as a clog, an error code will show on the LCD display. If there is an error code showing on the LCD display, it will let you know what the issue is.
