SMEG Dishwasher Not Working (How to Fix/Reset)

Modern white dishwasher

Starting a SMEG dishwasher is very easy, you simply press the on button, select the wash cycle you want to use, and then press the start button. However, if there’s an issue with your SMEG dishwasher it can not start at all or a specific feature such as the dry cycle doesn’t work. Today, I will explain what to do if your SMEG dishwasher is not working.

In general, first check your SMEG dishwasher is getting power by seeing if any of the lights light up on the control panel. If it is getting power, then check the door is closed completely. Then check if the spray arms are blocked from spinning. After that, do the steps below.

Check that there isn’t any water pooling in the dishwasher, this indicates a clog which will need to be cleared. The delayed start could also have been selected by accident and you’ll need to cancel it. Below, I will cover these steps in detail so you can see exactly what to do.

SMEG Dishwasher Not Working (How to Fix/Reset)

Dishwashers like all appliances can all of a sudden just stop working. While oftentimes it can be something simple, other times it can be something that takes some time to fix. Below are the first steps you should take when your SMEG dishwasher is not working.

As a general rule, verify that your SMEG dishwasher is turned on, is getting power, and that the door is closed completely. If it’s getting power and turned on at least one light will be on or flashing. If it’s on and the door is completely closed do the steps below.

These steps are a little bit tricky but are very easy to do even if you have no experience with fixing a dishwasher. Here’s each of these steps, as well as, additional troubleshooting steps you should do:

1. Checking your SMEG dishwasher is getting power

The best first step is to verify that your SMEG dishwasher is getting power. If any of the lights on the control panel are lit up, you’re good to go, and move on to the next step. But, if no lights are showing there are two potential causes.

The wall outlet can not be supplying power or an internal component on your SMEG dishwasher can have failed. To check that wall outlet, it’s best to plug in another device into the same wall outlet that your SMEG dishwasher is plugged into. This isn’t easy if the wall outlet is located behind the dishwasher, and the dishwasher needs to be pulled out to access it.

But, in other cases the wall outlet might be very easy to access. If it is plug in another device like a phone charge into it to test whether it’s supplying power.

When it’s not supplying power or you don’t have easy access to the wall outlet check the switchboard in your home. The fuse can have blown, or has clicked into the off position.

2. The program delay timer is on and needs to be canceled

There is a delay timer function on SMEG dishwashers. When it’s set the cycle won’t start for a set amount of time like 30 minutes or 1 hour. It may have been accidentally set, and needs to be canceled.

Canceling the delay timer is done by pressing and holding the start/pause until it has a solid light. Then you press the ‘delay start’ button until the display says zero, instead of the time it’s set to, such as 2 hours, or 8 hours.

This can vary by model so if required, refer to the specific owner’s manual for your SMEG dishwasher. To see where to find your dishwasher model, and download a digital copy of the owners manual refer to this page on the official SMEG website.

3. The door is not closed all the way

Another common issue is the door is not completely closed. There is a sensor on a dishwasher that detects whether the door is closed, and it won’t start if it’s registering that the door is still open. To check this, open the dishwasher and close it again.

Making sure that it’s pushed all the way closed. Typically, it will click securely into place. And if you tug on the door without squeezing in the handle it won’t open.

After checking each of these steps, if it’s still not working then get in contact with SMEG support. Before doing so, there are some more specific issues with a SMEG dishwasher.

Such as, the dishes aren’t drying, or there is water pooling at the bottom of the dishwasher. Below are step by step instructions for how to fix more specific issues with your SMEG dishwasher.

SMEG Dishwasher Not Drying

At the end of a SMEG dishwasher cycle the dishes will be almost always completely dry, apart from a little bit of pooling on certain dishes. If you open the door soon after it has finished some steam will also come out. But, if it’s not drying at all, or not drying very well, here’s what you should do.

In general, the vent gasket is blocked, the vent fan is not working, the heating element is faulty, or the dishes have been incorrectly stacked. Any issues, other than the dishes being incorrectly stacked requires a repair technician. Below is how to make sure you’re stacking the dishes correctly.

Make sure bowls that are placed in the top rack and turned over so the curved side is facing down. And that cutlery is stacked in the cutlery compartment facing up. Otherwise it’s an issue with one of the compartments in your SMEG dishwasher.

There is a vent fan that blows the steam out of a SMEG dishwasher, and a vent gasket where the steam blows out. Either of these can be an issue of the heating element. Overall, unless you’re experienced with repairing appliances you should get in contact with SMEG support to have it repaired.

SMEG Dishwasher Not Heating

A SMEG dishwasher gets hot water from a hot water inlet valve. There is also a heating element that heats up to dry the dishes at the end of the cycle. If your SMEG dishwasher remains cold here’s what causes it to happen.

As a general rule, there is an issue with the hot water inlet valve, or the heating element is faulty. If you have hot water coming out of a nearby tab then it generally indicates there is no issue with the hot water. If the heating element is faulty it requires a registered technician to fix it.

Therefore, you should get in touch with SMEG customer support to have your SMEG dishwasher repaired. It can be worth doing a dishwasher factory reset, or a soft reset on your SMEG dishwasher. A soft reset is done by disconnecting it from the power, and then connecting the power again.

To do that you’ll need to unplug it at the wall, if you have access. Or, turn off that area of your house at the switchboard. The instructions for how to do a factory reset on your SMEG dishwasher can be found at the very end of this article.

SMEG Dishwasher Arms Not Spinning

Modern white dishwasher with plates inside

There are two spinning arms on SMEG dishwashers, one on the top, and the other on the bottom. They spin and spray water to wash the dishes. If they aren’t spinning, this is what you should do.

In general, the arms are obstructed by a piece of cutlery or crockery, the spinning mechanism of the arm is broken, or the part of the spinning arm that connects to the spinning mechanism is broken. Check that it isn’t obstructed, otherwise it requires a repair technician.

The spinning arms are a detachable component but it can be a bit of a waste to buy new ones and replace them if they’re not what’s causing the issue. Therefore, contact SMEG support to see if it’s covered under warranty, and to have it repaired.

SMEG Dishwasher Not Spraying Water

Confused woman standing

For a SMEG dishwasher to clean the dishes water needs to spray out of the spraying arms. There are a few reasons why your SMEG dishwasher is not spraying water. Below is what to do if your SMEG dishwasher is not spraying water.

As a general rule, the holes where the water comes out are blocked with food or something else, or the pump that sends water to the spraying arms has failed. Inspect the holes in the spraying arm to verify that they aren’t blocked. If they’re clear then contact SMEG support to have it repaired.

Inspect the holes in the spraying arms. Some food remnants can be stuck in them. If they’re clogged, clear them using an old toothbrush or similar.

The pump that is responsible for spraying water out of the spraying arms is located on the interior of your dishwasher, and is very difficult to access without specialist skills. Therefore, to inspect the pump to see if it’s faulty and/or repair or replace it contact SMEG support.

SMEG Dishwasher Not Draining

There is a pump at the bottom of SMEG dishwashers that sucks water out of your dishwasher. There is a screen that filters out food particles, and an opening for the water to flow out which can be clogged and needs to be cleared. Here’s what to do if your SMEG dishwasher is not draining.

As a general rule, there is a clog in the base of the dishwasher that needs to be cleared manually. If the clog is cleared the drain pump is likely faulty, and will need to be replaced. If you’ve cleared the clog and it’s still not draining then it’s best to get a repair technician to fix it.

After you clear a clog you should start a cycle. At the start of a cycle it will detect if there is water in the base of the dishwasher and begin draining it, if it’s able to do so.

However, if it can’t it won’t start. In that case, you should contact a SMEG support to organize a repair technician to repair your dishwasher.

SMEG Dishwasher Door Won’t Close

Confused woman standing

The door on a SMEG dishwasher will give a click to let you know that it is completely closed. If there’s a problem with the door it won’t close all the way, or when it’s pushed completely closed it won’t click and close securely. Here’s what to do when that happens.

As a general rule, there is either something in the way of the door, or the latch or hinge has failed and needs to be repaired or replaced. First check that a piece of cutlery or crockery is not sticking out and stopping the door from closing. Then do the following.

Inspect the door latch, and the hinges for any sign of cosmetic damage. For example, one side of the door handle can be out of place. The door handle is connected to the power to the dishwasher so be careful when working with it.

And don’t use a screwdriver or anything else metal to fiddle with it without first disconnecting your dishwasher from the power. If you see any cosmetic damage to the latch or hinges, it’s best to contact SMEG support to have a qualified technician repair it for you. If you’re handy with tools, then there are many tutorials on Youtube that explain how to replace the hinges, and the latch.

SMEG Dishwasher Door Won’t Open

Modern white dishwasher with plates inside

A SMEG dishwasher door and handle gets a lot of use, but typically the door handle and latch will work perfectly fine for long periods of time. However, if it fails the door won’t close and in some cases will be stuck shut. This is what you should do if your SMEG dishwasher door won’t open.

In general, it’s best to have a repair technician fix the door mechanism. The door mechanism can be released using an allen wrench. However, you will need to be very sure your SMEG dishwasher is disconnected from the power, as there is a risk of a serious electric shock.

In general, after you do get it open the issue will keep happening. In that case, the door handle will need to be replaced. Get in touch with SMEG support to have a repair technician replace the door latch for you.

How to Reset SMEG Dishwasher to Factory Settings

Confused woman standing

A factory reset is good for fixing issues with most electronic devices. When you’re having issues with your SMEG dishwasher and you want to factory reset it, here are the steps to do it.

Turn your SMEG dishwasher off, then when you turn it on, as soon as possible press the program button 4 times very fast. If you do it fast enough the 1st light and 5 th light will light up. Press the program one time, and the first light will go out. Then do the steps below.

After that, turn it off using the power button. Then turn it back on. This will perform a factory reset, and everything should be working again.

If the above steps don’t work then it means there’s a board failure. When there is an error that your dishwasher is aware of it will have an error code. When there is an error code the 5th light from the left will stay solid, and some of the other lights will flash.

As a general rule, make sure it’s getting power by seeing if any of the lights on the control panel are lighting up when you turn it on. If it is getting power then check that the door is closed all the way, and that there isn’t anything stopping the spray arms at the top and bottom from spinning.
