What Paint Can You Use On Glass? (How To)

Painting glass can be done for crafting purposes or perhaps you might want to paint a window for advertising. Regardless of why you want to do it, what paint can be used for painting on glass?

Acrylic enamel paint is the best choice for painting on glass. Regardless of the paint you use, however, it is not going to be as permanent as if you were painting on a porous surface, such as wood or paper.

Painting the cup of glass

It can be difficult to choose the type of paint that you should use for painting on glass. It depends on why you are doing it and how long you want it to last.

In some cases, you may be doing a craft project and you are simply going to have the glass sitting on the shelf and you will not be using it or washing it. If that is the case, there are many different options available.

On the other hand, if you plan on using the glass item regularly and you never want the pain to come off, you are limited in what you can use. There may be some solvent-based paints that will etch their way into the glass and stick better, but it will still not be a perfect option.

Essentially, you need to choose from a few different types of paint if you are going to be painting on glass. Chalk paint is one option that can work on a smooth surface but it doesn’t adhere permanently. Enamel paint is a good choice and if it is cured, it will stick. Spray paint can be used but you need to use it properly.

What Paint Can You Use On Glass? (How To)

Regardless of the type of paint you use, you are likely to run into some type of problem. This can include difficulty having the paint stick or it may be in removing the paint from the glass once you are finished.

Sometimes, it is also in the preparation of the glass and this is something that is often overlooked. You have to clean the glass properly and that may mean using some rubbing alcohol or another solvent that will remove grease and grime from the glass.

If there is any dirt or anything else on the surface of the glass, including the oil from your skin, it will make it difficult for the paint to stick. Cleaning it properly ahead of time can go a long way in helping the paint to stick around for a while.

The other problem is removing the paint. If you feel that it is necessary to remove paint from the glass, there are some options available.

Razor Blade – Using a razor blade is one of the best ways to remove any type of paint from glass. You should wet things down with soap and water or Windex to provide some lubrication and then scrape the paint from the glass.

Vinegar – Using a solution of warm vinegar and water can also help to soften the paint and make it easier to remove. It isn’t a perfect option, but it is one to consider.

Acetone – Either straight acetone or fingernail polish remover based on acetone can remove paint very quickly. It can be used along with a scrub brush or even a razor blade to completely clean the glass.

Then again, if you want to paint to stick around, be as gentle with it as possible.

One other thing to consider is your personal safety. If you are going to be using or drinking out of the glass for any length of time, be careful that you leave plenty of room so that you aren’t accidentally drinking some of the paint as well.

Most paint is toxic, at least to a certain extent and it will wash off very easily if it comes in contact with your saliva. You can use the glass, such as if you were to paint a wineglass as a craft, just don’t get the paint near the rim.

Let’s consider some of the different types of paint and whether they can be used effectively on glass.

How To Paint Glass Properly?

Now that we have considered some different types of paint, we will look into how to paint glass properly. This is something that will work with almost any type of paint, but using paints that we identified above that work better for glass will yield better results.

Step 1: Prepare – Before you try to put any paint on the glass you need to get it ready for the paint. This will include removing any dirt or oil from the glass, including oil from your skin.

The easiest way to prepare glass is to use soapy, warm water. You can also run the glass through the dishwasher as well. Afterward, use some rubbing alcohol or vinegar on a paper towel to wipe it and remove any oils that are left behind. Be sure to allow the glass to dry thoroughly.

Step 2: Tape – If you are going to be doing any type of pattern or if you are limiting the paint to a particular area, you should tape it off at this point. Stencil tape is good for crafting purposes but you can also use painter’s tape if you are doing a larger area.

As far as the removal of the tape is concerned, this is something that should be done before the paint is dry. Since the paint is not likely to stick to the glass well, you will want to pull the tape off early or you will pull some of the paint off the glass as well.

Step 3: Painting – This is the point when you will actually paint the glass. Try not to put too much paint on the brush and if possible, use several lighter coats in order to build the paint up. You may have to allow the paint to dry between coats.

If you cover the area immediately after painting the first time, you will likely pick up that paint and either move it to another area of the glass or remove it altogether. Always paint in layers.

If you have any details that you are painting, use a smaller brush. Larger details can be painted with a sponge or a larger brush.

Step 4: Curing – Each different type of paint will have specific instructions on how you cure it. Make sure you read those instructions and follow them carefully.

One important part of the curing process is to allow the glass to dry. If you give it a full day for the drying process, it will likely stick to the glass much better.

Sometimes you might also have to cure the paint by baking it. This is done with certain types of enamel paint and you would put the glass in the oven for 30 minutes at 350°F. Do not put it directly into a hot oven but allow it to preheat with the oven.

If you bake the glass, turn the heat off after 30 minutes and allow it to come to room temperature slowly. Do not use or touch the paint on the glass for 72 hours.
