What Paint to Use on Steel? (How-to)

Painting the steel

It is not too difficult to find what paint to use on steel as we’ve been painting cars and other machinery for over 100 years.

However, finding the right paint for a smooth metal surface can be a bit of a challenge.

Oil-based and enamel paints are the best for steel. Due to the nature of their environment, tough, hard-wearing paint is desirable for machinery and other metal products. The ideal paint will have a rust inhibitor to help prevent the metal from oxidizing.

Before painting a metal surface, it is best to wash the metal with soapy water to remove any oil or waxy build-up. After the metal is dry, sand it with fine-grain sandpaper or steel wool. This will remove any dust particles left on the surface.

Depending on what the metal is used for, there are a wide variety of specialized paints to provide for every eventuality.

There are paints for very hot conditions, moisture-resistant formulas as well as rust inhibitors. There are also a variety of application technologies, from spray painting to brush-on types.

For the most hard-wearing paint finish, use an oil or enamel paint system.

Can Acrylic Paint Be Used on Steel?

Painting the steel

There are many different metal applications for which acrylic paints are suitable.

Acrylic paint can be used on metal so long as the proper preparation process is followed. After removing any rust with sandpaper or a wire brush, the metal surface must be cleaned with a dry cloth. Then a primer suitable for use with acrylic paint must be applied to the metal surface.

At least 2 coats of primer are needed to ensure that the metal does not rust.

Step 1

Clean the metal surface and remove all signs of rust and oil with sandpaper and a wire brush. Then rub the metal down with a dry cloth.

Step 2.

Tape off all the areas that you don’t wish to paint and remove any hardware or components on the metal surface that you don’t want to be painted. Plug any holes with a paper towel or wooden plugs, taking extra precautions with threaded holes.

Step 3.

Spray on two coats of primer, making sure that the primer is dry before applying a second coat.

Step 4.

Once the primer is completely dry, apply the first coat of acrylic paint. Wait for it to dry before applying the next coat.

Avoid trying to spray too much paint on at any one time as that will result in runs. Build up the paint gradually, even if it takes many more coats than you anticipated.

Once the metal surface is totally covered with paint and the finish is smooth and blemish-free, allow the surface to dry for a day or two before removing the tape and plugs.

With garden furniture and other outdoor metal surfaces being under constant threat from the weather, it makes sense to use paint that is purpose-made for the job of protecting metal surfaces.

Latex paints are perfect for covering steel and other metals used outdoors. While it is easy to use and provides excellent protection from rust, latex-based paints chip more easily than other types of paint. You can extend the life of latex paints by using a high-quality oil-based primer.

To apply latex paint to a metal surface, you first need to get back to bare metal.

Step 1.

Strip the metal surface back to bare metal using a scraper, wire brush, or sandpaper. Once you have removed all the rust and old paint, it’s ready for the primer.

Step 2.

Wipe down the surface with an alcohol-based cleaner so that it is as clean as possible. Then apply a coat of oil-based primer. For an even coverage, use a short nap roller. If the final finish is less important to you, use a good quality brush.

Step 3.

Allow the primer to dry, before applying a coat of latex paint.

Step 4.

Apply a second coat if the paint has not covered the whole surface evenly. Allow at least 48 hours before using the metal component.

Can Oil Paint Be Used on Steel?

Painting the steel

Oil-based paints are usually used for exterior metalwork. They are better at protecting steel from rusting than latex paints.

Oil-based paints can be used on steel and are best for outdoor use as they are formulated to resist rust very well. While a more uniform finish is achieved when painting over a primer, oil paint contains no water, so it can be applied directly to metal and it won’t make it rust.

Step 1.

Remove any rust or old flaky paint by brushing it off using a wire wheel, steel brush, or sandpaper. For larger metal components, sandblasting can remove all traces of rust.

Step 2.

Once the metal is clean, apply a coat of primer or apply the oil-based paint directly to the steel surface. You may require two or three coats to achieve your desired finish.

Step 3.

Allow the paint to dry for a minimum of 2 days before using the steel item.

Can Water-Based Paint Be Used on Steel?

Confused man standing

Water-based paints usually have a high gloss finish and are desirable when applying a finishing coat to a metal surface.

However, as they contain a high quantity of water, a good quality primer is needed to protect the metal from the risk of oxidation and rust.

Water-based paint is normally a direct-to-metal finish or a topcoat. These are used when a high gloss finish is desired. Zinc primers are the preferred metal coating to prevent corrosion. By removing all the rust and oil and then applying a zinc primer, a glossy finish is assured.

When preparing the metal for the primer, it is best to scuff the surface a little to provide an etched surface for the primer to grip on.

After the primer is dry, spray the water-based onto the steel surface for the best quality finish. Each coat should be very thin so that there is little chance of the paint running.

It is better to have many very thin coats that bond together than a single thick coat that drips and sags.

After applying the final top coat, allow the paint to dry for at least 2 days before removing the tape or attaching the steel to anything else, as it may damage the paintwork before it has time to properly cure.
