What Paint to Use on Formica?

Modern kitchen wood countertop

Formica is used for kitchen countertops, tables, cupboards, and a hundred other places around the home.

While it may be durable and hard-wearing, making change normally means ripping out tons of stuff, and that’s expensive.

But it’s possible to give it a color makeover. And that’s where you’ll need to know what paint to use on Formica.

When painting Formica you need to choose hard-wearing and durable paint.  Your options are to use a two-part water-based epoxy or interior acrylic paint. Even oil-based paints are suitable. If you’re painting countertops, make sure that you remove all the fittings, including the sink.

After thoroughly cleaning the Formica, take a scouring pad or medium-grit sandpaper and roughen up the surface. This will give the primer something to hold onto.

Use a roller to apply the primer as it will give a much neater finish. You can use a brush to get into the corners and hard-to-reach places.

If you’re using a two-part epoxy, remember that it cures quickly, so you have to work quickly and finish the whole section in one session. Allow the paint 2-3 days to dry before replacing any fittings and removing any tape.

Can You Use Chalk Paint on Formica?

Modern kitchen wood countertop

There is a swing towards chalk paint as it is versatile and allows one to create a vintage, shabby-chic look relatively easily.

Despite Formica being very shiny and slick, you can use chalk paint on it, so long as you follow a few simple rules. You’ll need to prime the surface with an oil or water-based acrylic primer. Scuffing the surface with a scouring pad will help the primer adhere to the Formica more securely.

Here’s a quick way to paint Formica:

  1. Start by cleaning the Formica with a soapy solution to get rid of any grime or oily residue.
  2. Once it is clean, sand the Formica so that it is slightly rough. You can use 120-140 grit sandpaper or a scouring pad to do the job.
  3. Then apply the primer using a roller to get even coverage.

Once the primer has dried, apply the chalk paint, making sure that you don’t apply it too thick. You can even thin the paint with water if it appears too thick.

Can You Use Rustoleum Paint on Formica?

Confused man standing

Rustoleum is known for its quality paints, especially ones that can withstand harsh wear.

You can paint Formica with Rustoleum as the company produces a paint formulated to adhere to Formica. One of the many benefits of using this paint is that it’s not necessary to use a primer. After preparing the Formica by cleaning and sanding it, you can apply a couple of coats of Rustoleum.

To apply Rustoleum to Formica, first, clean the Formica and then give it good sand with 120-grit sandpaper.

Follow this up by:

  • Brushing away any dust left over from the sanding. A damp cloth will help to remove all the dust particles that may be left behind.
  • Then, using a roller, apply the Rustoleum to the Formica so that you have a thin layer of paint on the surface. Allow it to dry and then apply a further coat.
  • Let the paint dry for a day or two before using the newly painted surface.

Can You Use Enamel Paint on Formica?

Confused man standing

It is not the easiest job to paint Formica well. The surface is very shiny and smooth, which makes it difficult for paint to adhere well.

You can use enamel paint on Formica but you have to follow a very precise process to get a good result. It is important that you key the surface and use a good-quality primer. Once the primer is dry, the enamel paint must be applied very carefully so that you get a uniform finish.

Here’s a 7-step process to get the best results from painting Formica with enamel paint:

Step 1: Choose a Suitable Paint Color

The best part about painting your Formica countertops or cabinets is choosing the color.

You have the option of choosing a matte, gloss, or high-gloss finish. It is recommended that you go for the gloss or high-gloss finish as it will look better than matt and is less prone to chipping and scratches.

Step 2: Prepare the Formica

The Formica must be totally degreased and all the smudges and dirt must be removed. It is best to use a detergent first, followed by denatured alcohol, for a completely clean surface.

Step 3: Sanding the Surface

The purpose of sanding the Formica is to give it a slightly rough surface that the primer will stick easily to. To do this you should use 120-grit sandpaper followed by 180 to 220 grit sandpaper. Once the sanding is complete, give the Formic a clean with a damp cloth to remove all the dust.

Step 4: Fill Any Holes or Scratches in the Surface

To provide the best possible finish, you should fill in any holes or scratches in the Formica. This is best done with epoxy putty.

Step 6: Apply Primer

Before applying the primer, tape the edges so that you don’t paint over the parts of the counter that you don’t want to paint on. Then, using a roller, apply the bonding primer. This should be left to dry and when it is touch dry you can start the next step.

Step 7: Paint the Formica Surface

After stirring the paint very well, use a roller and brush to apply the paint to your Formica counter or cabinet. You may need to apply a second coat if the color you are using is lighter than the underlying Formica color.

Just wait for the paint to be touch dry, then start the second coat.

You may want to finish with a sealant. In this case, let the first two layers dry and then apply a coat of clear gloss acrylic.

Can You Use Epoxy Paint on Formica?

Modern kitchen wood countertop

Depending on how daring you want to be, the epoxy coating can really liven up a dull and boring kitchen.

Epoxy paint is perfect for painting Formica as it is a budget-friendly way to get a beautiful new look on kitchen cabinets and counters. While you need to be careful with the process, the result is well worth the time and effort you take to follow all the steps.

To paint your Formica with epoxy paint, this is what you do:

Step 1. Formica Surface Preparation

The Formica needs to be cleaned of any grease and grime. When that is removed, sand the surface with 8o-grit sandpaper to provide a rough surface for the primer to adhere to.

After the surface has been sanded, vacuum the dust and then use denatured alcohol to wash the surface and remove the last of the dust.

Step 2. Applying Primer and Mixing Epoxy Coating

The epoxy will not stick to the Formica without a bonding primer to help. Using a sponge roller, cover the Formica with a good quality primer specifically designed for Formica.

Once the primer is dry, it’s time to mix the epoxy. Once the epoxy is mixed, you will have very little time to apply it to the surface before it starts to harden. It is also not a good idea to mix too much epoxy, as once it starts to harden, you cannot use it later.

Step 3. Painting Formica with Epoxy Paint

Use a roller to apply the epoxy as this gives the best finish. You may have to use a brush to get to the corners or hard-to-reach places.

It is a good idea to start at the outer edges and work your way towards the middle of the Formica surface. If you are painting cabinets or cupboards, be careful of dripping. Use drop cloths to avoid getting epoxy on the counters or floor below.

The epoxy will take about 2-3 days to cure completely. So, it is best if you don’t use the Formica counters or cabinets until after the surface is fully cured.

Step 4. Applying Top Coat

A polyurethane top coat will help to protect the finish of your newly painted Formica. It takes about 5 minutes to dry to a clear finish after you roll it onto the surface. You’ll need 4-5 coats for a perfectly glossy finish.

Can You Use Frenchic Paint on Formica?

Confused man standing

With an increased interest in vintage finishes and décor style, Frenchic paint is a very popular finish.

Frenchic is a chalk paint that can be applied to Formica. It doesn’t require a primer and provides a matt finish that is very appealing when combined with a vintage look. You’ll need sugar soap and a sander to prepare the surface, but there is no requirement for special bonding primers or top coats.

To apply Frenchic paint, follow this step-by-step guide:

Step 1.

Clean the surface with sugar, making sure that all the grease and grime are removed.

Step 2.

Using the sander and 150 – 180 grit sandpaper, rough up the surface so that the paint has a good grip.

Step 3.

Apply the paint in long strokes with a high-quality paintbrush. Allow the paint about 2 hours to dry and then apply a second coat. The finish will be much better on the second coat as the first coat always looks a little sketchy.

The paint takes about 2-3 weeks to cure fully and becomes hard and resistant to knocks and scrapes.

Can You Use Spray Paint on Formica?

Modern kitchen wood countertop

Spray painting is an inexpensive alternative to epoxy coatings.

You can spray paint Formica so long as you prepare the surface carefully. After degreasing the surface, use a sander to rough up the surface with 180-220 grit sandpaper. Then apply a coat or two of bonding primer specifically for spray painting. Then spray paint your Formica to the required color.

Spray painting takes a little practice but is not too difficult to master.

Here’s what to do:

Step 1.

Clean the Formica with a degreaser and rinse it off afterward.

Step 2.

Once it’s dry, sand the surface so that it is slightly rough.

Step 3.

Using a product like the spray-painting primer from Rustoleum, apply two coats of primer for an even, smooth finish.

Step 4.

Then apply two to three coats of spray paint on the Formica, being careful not to allow drips to form or to apply too thick a layer of paint. Rather apply another coat than try to spray a lot on at once.
