  1. Check that the Hulu app has the latest patch
  2. Restart your Apple TV
  3. Check your internet connection
  4. Close the Hulu manually and reopen it
  5. Delete the Hulu and install it again

Apple TV Won’t Play Hulu

A major issue when watching Hulu on your Apple TV is when it wont play at all. This can occur for a number of reasons. Here’s what they are and how to get it working again.

As a general rule, the internet connection needs to be inspected to ensure it has a stable connection. After that, check there is not a pending software update for the Hulu app. If there is, it needs to be installed. Following that, perform a reset of your Apple TV.

Finally, if it still does not work then uninstall the Hulu app and then reinstall it again. Below, I will explain in depth how to perform each of these steps one by one:

Step 1: Check your internet connection

Your Wi-Fi might be temporarily down, or running slow for some reason. Perform a test by using the same internet connection on another device. For example, access the internet using your smartphone.

Open up a few web pages and see if it loads fast and loads well. If it’s running slower than normal or you can’t access the internet at all, then it’s a good idea to reset your router. Hulu needs to connect to the internet to stream video files. And a slow internet connection will mean Hulu can’t download the files it needs and the video won’t play.

If your internet is working fine, then try the next step.

Step 2: Make sure you have the latest version of Hulu

Apple recommends in their official article about fixing apps that you should check there isn’t an update for Hulu. To check it go to your Settings. Then select ‘Apps’. After that, make sure that automatic updates is turned on.

If it was turned off and you turn it on, you will have to give it 5 to 10 minutes to update all of your apps. But, to be sure you may want to come back to it after 30 minutes because there are likely a lot of pending updates.

Step 3: Restart your Apple TV

This step is very easy. You simply press and hold the home button. It’s the button on the top right of your remote that has a screen icon. That will bring up a menu on your Apple TV. Then you select the moon icon by pressing the touchpad and it will put it to sleep.

After that just unplug your Apple TV from the wall, wait for 6 seconds, plug it back in again, then turn it on. See if Hulu is working now. If not, then you should try closing Hulu manually, which is the next step.

Step 4: Close and reopen Hulu manually

Closing the app manually and then reopening it can reset the Hulu and resolve any issues which can be causing it not to work. To do that press the home button on your Apple TV remote twice. It’s the button on the top right of your remote with a screen icon.

Then scroll using your touchpad to the left or right and locate the Hulu app. Highlight the Hulu app. Then swipe up on the touchpad to close it. After it’s closed select it from the home screen or wherever you have the Hulu app located to open it again. Then test it to see if it’s working now.

Step 5: Reinstall Hulu

Finally, if it’s still not working then you should try reinstalling Hulu. To do that go to Settings, then select General. After that select Usage, and then Manage Storage. In that menu is a list of apps. Next to each of them is a trash can icon that can be used to uninstall it.

Locate the Hulu app in this list. Then select the trashcan icon next to it to uninstall it. Once it’s been uninstalled you need to install it again. Simply go to the App Store and search for the Hulu app then once you find it select it and you will have an option to install it.

It may show a cloud icon with a down arrow instead of an install button because you’ve installed it before. Either select the option with the cloud icon or the option that says install depending on what it shows you.

That will download a fresh version of the app. Once it’s downloaded tap on it to open it and see if it’s working. If it still does not work then I would contact Apple TV support and/or Hulu support via email. Or, raise a support ticket through their official website.

Hulu Keeps Freezing/Crashing on Apple TV

Sometimes you can open the Hulu app and it works fine but every now and then it will freeze or crash. I looked into how to fix this issue and here’s what I found.

As a general rule it indicates an issue with the internet connection or the app has crashed. To resolve this issue the Hulu app and Apple TV need to be restarted. The internet connection needs to be tested to ensure it’s working.

Finally, if it is still freezing or crashing the app needs to be reinstalled. The exact steps for how to do each of these fixes are listed in the section above. It’s a good idea to start from the first one, and work your way through them. They are all very simple and easy to do.
