Headphones Not Working on Dell Laptop

Dell Laptop Headphones Not Detected

This allows Dell laptop owners the ability to expand the capabilities of their laptop and tailor their use of the device to fit their exact needs, such as connecting headphones. If you go to plug your Dell laptop headphones in and notice that they are not being detected, how can you get them to be recognized?

If your Dell laptop headphones are not detected, ensure the Waves Maxx Audio application has been enabled. To do this, go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Apps’ > ‘Startup’ and confirm that the application has been set to ‘ON.’ Once on, test to see if your headphones are easily detected.

If enabling the Waves Maxx Audio application does not cause your headphones to be detected, it could be that you need to enable more applications that are related to Relatalk. These settings include the HD Audio Background Process and the Realtek HD Audio manager. To enable these applications, simply go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Apps’ > ‘Startup Apps,’ find both applications, and be sure they have been set to ‘ON’ as well.

If your Dell laptop headphones microphone isn’t working, it could be that the drivers need to be updated on the device. To do this, go to dell.com/support/drivers, find the laptop model, select ‘Check for Updates’ when found, click ‘Download’ then follow the instructions to install.

Once you have all the drivers downloaded and installed to your computer, restart the device to enable the change and see if you are able to use the microphone on your headphones without a problem. If the microphone is still not working, switch it to another port on your laptop and be sure that all ports you are using are free of any dust or debris that may be interfering with the function of the headphones and thus, the microphone itself.

However, if you are in the middle of a movie, game, work meeting, or are listening to a favorite album and notice that the sound is echoing, such an issue is beyond maddening and needs a fix sooner rather than later.

If your Dell laptop headphones are echoing sound, disable all sound effects within ‘Enhancements.’ To do this, search for ‘Control Panel’ and go to ‘Best Match’ > ‘View By’ > ‘Small Icons’ > ‘Sounds’ > ‘Speakers’ > ‘Properties’ > open the ‘Enhancements’ tab > and click ‘Disable all Sound Effects.’

The reason this is done is due to the fact that not all headphones and headphones sets are made alike when it comes to their compatibility with Dell laptops. If you are using a set of headphones that are not compatible with your device, you may find that they do not work altogether, or that the audio is echoing when you have them completely connected. By completing the steps above, you should be able to resolve this issue in a matter of moments.

Dell Laptop Headphones No Sound

You may not be someone who is dealing with the issue of echoing sound when headphones are connected to your Dell laptop, but even more troubling than this is a set of headphones that have no sound coming from them at all. If you have headphones connected to your Dell laptop and there is no sound coming from them, read on to see what the cause of this likely is and what you can do to get audio streaming from the accessory.

If your Dell laptop headphones have no sound, set the headphones as a default device. To do this, search for ‘Control Panel’ and select ‘Sound’ and under the ‘Playback’ tab, right click the headphones and select ‘Default Playback Device,’ right click ‘Headphone’ > ‘Enable’ > ‘Set as Default Device.’

Once you have selected ‘Set as Default Device,’ you will then select ‘Ok’ before removing the headphones from the headphone jack or USB port (depending on which type of connection your accessory uses) and plug them back in.

Dell Laptop Headphones Not Working When Plugged In

Although there are some devices that are not compatible with Dell laptops, when it comes to headphones, there are typically quite a few different workarounds that will get your accessory working no matter what the brand. When connecting headphones to a Dell laptop, the laptop must first be able to detect the accessory being plugged in, and if it is not able to do that, the accessory will not work. If your headphones aren’t working when plugged in, what is the fix?

If your Dell laptop headphones aren’t working when plugged in, be sure your headphones have been enabled. On the Volume icon, right click and select ‘Open Sounds Settings,’ > ‘Manage Sound Devices’ > select the headphones you have connected and click ‘Enable’ if available.

If the headphones have not been enabled, this is the cause of your accessory not working when plugged in and once you have the headphones enabled, you should unplug them, reconnect them, and then be able to use them as you wish going forward. Dell Laptop Headphones Jack Not Working

For most headphones connected to a Dell laptop, they will use the headphone jack that is found on the side of the device to connect and begin outputting audio. This jack can connect to other devices as well, but when headphones are connected, users should be able to hear sound coming from the jack immediately so long as the accessory connected has been enabled. If the headphone jack on your Dell laptop is not working, how can it be fixed?

If your Dell laptop headphone jack is not working, try disabling the Front Panel Jack Detection. To do this, from the Control Panel go to Realtek HD Audio Manager and select the option to ‘Disable Front Panel Jack Detection.’ Turn the laptop off and back on, then see if the jack is working.

Once turned on, be sure you have also enabled Bluetooth on the headphones so that the accessory is made discoverable and thus, can be selected to connect once found on your Dell laptop.
