What Can You Use To Clean Glass?

Cleaning the glass

One of the chores that we have to do around the home, whether we like it or not, is clean the glass. Since this isn’t something that we would necessarily want to hire out to another service, what can be used to clean the glass quickly and easily?

The most effective product for cleaning glass is a mixture of 1/4 cup white vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon Dawn dishwashing liquid, and 2 cups of water. Put it in a bottle of water, shake and spray it on the area.

That is just one of the many different options that you have available for cleaning glass surfaces and windows. In fact, you will find that there may be many other options that you can consider, depending upon what you are cleaning and why you are cleaning it.

It’s even a good idea to experiment with the many different products and natural methods for cleaning glass because one may work better for you than another. You are always going to have opinions, as far as which cleaner to use, but the one that works best for you is always a good choice.

What Can You Use To Clean Glass?

One of the interesting things that you will discover about cleaning glass is the fact that it’s not all about the chemicals that you use. Even just using water will work in some cases, but it won’t work unless you use the right tools.

Most people simply grab a roll of paper towels and a bottle of Windex when they need to clean glass. I’m not necessarily saying that is a bad choice, but there are so many other options that can do a better job that it may be something you want to consider.

A good example of this is the tool that you use to wipe the glass dry. You will find that there are a variety of options that are suggested, but which one is going to be best for you?

Some people will tell you that the best thing you can use for cleaning windows is to grab some old newspapers. That may work for some people but for others, it will leave frustrating streaks and cause more problems than it is worth.

Some people just use paper towels, but that can be difficult and it can even be wasteful. That is why we recommend using a cloth.

It isn’t just any cloth that you should use for cleaning windows, you really need to use a microfiber cloth that is designed for that purpose. Why is that so important?

Microfiber can collect almost anything that is on the glass, including the fluid that was used to clean it. It will also leave behind a dry surface which helps to cut down on the streaks that may appear later.

Another benefit that microfiber has is removing bacteria. Although it is not always necessary to disinfect glass, especially when you’re cleaning something such as a window, it’s a great idea when you’re cleaning a surface that you eat from regularly.

Here are some of the other tools that you may want to consider having on hand for cleaning glass:

Squeegee

One of the basic tools that any cleaning company will have on hand is a squeegee. As a homeowner, you can also make use of this simple tool to keep your glass clean and streak-free.

Applicator

Along with the squeegee, you also need a way to apply the cleaner to the surface. In most homes, this is done by simply spraying the area with a spray bottle but an applicator can both apply the cleaner and get some scrubbing action going.

Another benefit of using an applicator is that you can get into the nooks and crannies, which is especially beneficial for cleaning windows. Rather than simply cleaning the surface, you are cleaning around the edges as well.

What type of applicator should you use? It could be something as simple as some paper towels wrapped around your squeegee but a lambswool applicator is going to be a premium choice.

Poles

If you are doing any glass cleaning at heights, it’s better to do so from the ground. An extendable pole can go a long way in helping you to stay safe and to get your windows or other glass surfaces at heights cleaned.

Of course, you also need the proper type of pole that has an end that will connect either a squeegee or an applicator. You also need to have those other tools to make it as convenient as possible.

Cleaning Bucket

Most homeowners simply throw a bottle of Windex into their general cleaning bucket but it’s best to have a small carrier that is specifically dedicated to cleaning glass. You can have all of your tools in that one small space and you will find that it makes it very convenient to get the job done.

At this point, we will take a look at some of the specific types of cleaners that may be used for getting glass squeaky clean. Some of them will work well and others are best avoided.

Can You Clean Clean Glass Using Vinegar?

Cleaning the glass

We often use vinegar for cleaning around the house but it is not well-suited for every job. Can you use it for cleaning glass?

Vinegar is an excellent cleaner for glass if you mix it in a solution of water at a 50/50 mixture. Putting it in a spray bottle and spraying it on the surface will get the job started. You can also use a lambswool applicator for applying more of the mixture and scrubbing the surface.

A vinegar and water mixture on its own will do a great job with Windows but sometimes, you want to take things to the next level. At times, adding a few drops of Dawn dishwashing liquid will help to clean the windows even further.

Dishwashing liquid affects the water by making it less likely to form droplets. As a result, it is easier to wipe or squeegee away from the glass so that you are left with a dry, streak-free shine.

In addition, if you have windows or another glass surface that has not been cleaned in a very long time, you may need to pre-clean it. This can be done with soap and water and then you can go through with vinegar to get it cleaned properly.

Vinegar will not harm glass but it can harm certain surfaces, including rubber and corrosive metal. Don’t allow the vinegar to come in contact with those other surfaces or it could cause damage over time.

Can You Clean Clean Glass Using Alcohol?

Have you ever considered using alcohol for cleaning glass? Is it even something to think about in the first place?

Rubbing alcohol can be used to clean glass in the home and in your automobile. It is safe for use on glass and since it evaporates quickly, it will leave behind a streak-free shine. You will still need to wipe the window after spraying your water and alcohol mixture, but it makes it easier to clean.

Generally speaking, you will want to mix about 10% rubbing alcohol into the water for the proper cleaning solution. Some people also add a little dishwashing liquid to help keep the water from spotting.

How To Clean Glass Properly

We’ve talked a lot about the different products that can be used for cleaning glass. What method should be used to clean glass properly?

The most important factor for cleaning glass is to use the proper cleaner. Vinegar and water with a little dawn dishwashing liquid is an excellent choice but don’t overlook the possibility of using a commercial cleaner. They are specifically designed for that purpose and can leave a streak-free finish when complete.

If you are cleaning a difficult surface or one that has not been cleaned in a long time, you may need to wash it with soap and water first to remove as much of the residue as possible. This works especially well for dirty windows and tabletops.

Apply the cleaning solution to the glass at this point using a lambswool applicator or by simply spraying it on the surface. The applicator has the added benefit of scrubbing the surface while you are cleaning.

There is no need to wait to remove the cleaner. Make sure that you remove it thoroughly, however, because any moisture left on the glass will leave a streak. Microfiber cloths work excellent for that purpose.
