What Can You Use To Cut A Glass Bottle? (How To)

One of the popular crafts that many people do at home is to cut glass bottles. It’s a fantastic way to upcycle and you can make some interesting-looking glasses for use at home in the process. What can be used to cut glass bottles properly?

The best way to cut a glass bottle is to cut entirely through the glass using either a Dremel tool or a tile cutter. This will provide you with the cleanest cut and the least likely possibility of splitting the glass or causing cracks.

Different glass bottle

There are a number of different methods that can be used for cutting a glass bottle. You should not necessarily limit yourself to one method and you may want to try all of them, because some may work better for you than others.

We’ll discuss some of the different ways that you can cut a bottle but we will also discuss some things that should not be forgotten because it can make a difference between you having fun doing it or a trip to the hospital.

What Can You Use To Cut A Glass Bottle?

When most people decide they are going to start cutting glass bottles and making their own glasses, they are surprised by how difficult it can be. They probably feel as if they can simply cut the glass because they’ve seen it done online.

Ask anyone who does it on a regular basis, however, they will tell you that it is not as easy as it looks. In fact, there are many different issues that can arise and one small mistake can make a difference between having a beautiful glass to add to your collection or having it shatter in front of you.

Obviously, we want to avoid having the glass shatter as much as possible. Honestly, we are making these bottles, in part, so that we are not wasting the bottle and throwing it away. Breaking the bottle would make it impossible to even recycle.

There are four primary ways to cut a glass bottle that we will discuss in this article in-depth.

1. Etch and Tap – This is the process where you etch the edge of the bottle and then tap it with a hammer to break it.

2. Etch and Dunk – In this process, you etch the glass with a glass cutter and then use alternating hot and cold water to break the glass where it is etched.

3. Etch and Burn – This is a surprising method but it can work well if you do it properly. You etch the glass with a glass cutter and then burn a string that is tied around the area where the bottle is etched.

4. Cut and Enjoy – This is the method that we recommend and will discuss in detail. Rather than etching the glass and running the risk of breaking it, you cut through the glass cleanly and then sand out the edge for use.

It really doesn’t matter which of these methods you want to use, it’s important to have all of the material gathered together before you begin using it. Don’t think that you can jump from one step to another without being prepared in advance.

Perhaps the most important factor to consider in advance is your own, personal safety. Anytime you are working with glass, particularly if you are running the risk of shattering it, you need to protect yourself.

One of the most important is wearing safety glasses. Most people think that they can just get away with wearing their prescription glasses, but that is wrong on a number of counts.

First of all, prescription glasses don’t often have a side shield that helps to protect your eyes from glass flying in from the sides. It happens, so don’t underestimate this. Additionally, glasses are not made for protecting you from projectiles and they can even shatter and become a projectile.

If you have to wear prescription glasses, you can get safety glasses that fit over your prescription glasses. It’s the best way to protect your eyes easily.

For additional protection, you may want to consider using a safety shield. This is better than the shields that are used for COVID protection, it is a shield that is OSHA approved and will protect your eyes and your face from flying glass.

Gloves are also important to wear, especially if you are going to be holding the glass while you cut it. If the bottle were to shatter in your hand, it could cause a severe cut that would require stitches.

Other things to consider are wearing long sleeve shirts and long pants. It may seem extreme to some people but the more you can protect yourself and your skin, the more you can enjoy the hobby without having to worry about getting hurt in the process.

Can You Cut A Glass Bottle With A String?

One of the methods of cutting glass bottles is to use a string. You have heard about it but can you actually do it?

Cutting a glass bottle with a string involves etching the bottle and then tying the string along that line. The string should be soaked in fingernail polish remover so you can light it on fire. After the string burns away, quickly submerge the bottle in ice-cold water for 30 seconds.

This is a method that is often used because it has somewhat of a coolness factor associated with it. It’s always fun to do something with fire, but there is also a hazard involved with it as well.

In many cases, you will have to burn multiple strings because it is not going to completely break the entire way through the bottle on the first try. If you are persistent, it may work well for you.

One other thing to consider is the way that you etch the glass. Some people try to go around the bottle multiple times to etch it more deeply. Doing so could actually make it more likely for the bottle to crack or break.

Simply etch the bottle one time and then allow the string to do its work.

Can You Cut A Glass Bottle With Water?

Water is a powerful force but can it be used to cut a glass bottle?

Cutting a bottle is possible with water, but not unless you etch the glass first. After etching the glass, you will have created a weak spot in the bottle. You can then alternately dunk the bottle into hot and cold water for 30 seconds at a time until it breaks cleanly.

Although it may be possible to cut a bottle with water, it is not the best option. In fact, the bottle is likely to shatter if you don’t do everything properly at first.

That is why we always stress the importance of wearing gloves would working with glass. If the bottle should break in your hand, you may end up needing stitches.

One other option for cutting a bottle with glass is to use a waterjet. This isn’t something that most homeowners have, but if you do have access to one, it can be used.

A waterjet shoots out a thin stream of water at high pressure. It can cut through a bottle but it can also shatter a bottle.

Can You Cut A Glass Bottle With Dremel?

Tools to glass bottle

Most people who love doing crafts have a Dremel tool at home. Is it possible to use this tool for cutting a bottle?

Dremel tools are actually one of the best methods for cutting a glass bottle. If you use the proper attachment that cuts through glass, you can cut the whole way through rather than only etching the surface.

You may find that there are some problems with using a Dremel tool for cutting glass. One of those issues is the fact that you need to have a very steady hand because you will have to cut through the glass and work your way around the bottle.

A similar method that works much better is to use a tile saw. Not only do you have the benefit of using water, you can make a jig so that it will cut through the bottle cleanly from one side to the other.

Can You Cut A Glass Bottle With Saw?

Saws are often used for cutting a wide variety of materials. Can you include a glass bottle in the list?

You can quickly cut through a bottle with the proper saw. The best option is to use a wet saw that is equipped with a glass cutting blade. Not only can it cut through the bottle cleanly, but it will also do so from the front to the back.

A tile saw does provide a convenient option for cutting glass bottles. There is one particular part of the job, however, that will either make or break the project.

As you are cutting through the bottle, you will have the strength of the bottle that has not been cut to hold things together. As you reach the end of the cut, however, there is a very thin amount of glass and this is where it typically blows out.

Hold the bottle steady as you finish the cut and go slowly during the last seconds. It will make a difference between having a nice glass or a shattered bottle.

It is obvious that a glass cutter will cut glass but can it cut a bottle?

You can use a glass cutter for etching a bottle and then a variety of methods can be used to break it cleanly. A glass cutter does not typically cut the whole way through a bottle, so you need to use one of those other methods.

Some common methods for breaking a bottle at the edge include tapping it with a hammer, dunking it in hot and then cold water over and over again, or burning a string along the etched mark.

It’s easier just to use a saw and cut the whole way through the bottle rather than trying one of these methods.

Can You Cut A Glass Bottle With Grinder?

Tools to glass bottle

Is an angle grinder a good tool for cutting a glass bottle? Make sure you read this before trying.

Since an angle grinder equipped with a glass cutting blade will cut entirely through the glass, it’s a good option. You will be limited, however, because it will not cut through the entire bottle so you have to work your way around the bottle with the angle grinder.

As long as you have a steady hand and work meticulously, this method can work well.

Can You Cut A Glass Bottle With Fire?

Have you ever heard of using alcohol to cut a glass bottle? You need to do this first.

You can soak a string in alcohol and tie it around a glass bottle where it has already been etched. Light the string on fire and it will make the mark easier to break. After the fire burns out, dunk the bottle in ice-cold water for 30 seconds.

Alcohol is just one of the many different flammable liquids that can be used for this purpose. Other people prefer to use acetone or perhaps nail polish remover.

Can You Cut A Glass Bottle With Tile Cutter?

A tile cutter can obviously be used for cutting tiles but can it be used for cutting a glass bottle?

A tile cutter is one of the best methods for cutting a glass bottle cleanly. If the blade is large enough, you can slowly push the bottle through until it cuts from one side to the other. A tile cutter may also use water, which helps to keep things cool.

If you are going to use a tile cutter, make sure that you are using one equipped with a glass cutting blade. Water is good for this purpose but it is not always necessary unless you are using a wet saw.

How To Cut Glass Bottle Properly

Confused man standing

Although there are many ways you could cut a glass bottle, that doesn’t mean that they are all the best ways to do it. In fact, there is one way that is much better than the others.

The best way to cut a glass bottle is to cut entirely through the glass. Many methods etch the glass and then either cut it by breaking it or burning it. Cutting through the glass bottle provides a much cleaner cut and less likelihood of chipping or breaking.

It is important to prepare properly if you are going to cut a bottle in this way. One way that you would do so is to mark the line before you cut it. Even if you are using a jig, it’s a good idea to mark the line with a sharpie.

Since you are going to be using water in the process, it’s also important that you don’t use any type of masking tape. Masking tape will not hold up underwater, but a sharpie will.

Your personal safety is also a priority when it comes to cutting glass. This includes wearing the proper PPE, and the following should be part of it.

1. Safety Glasses – There are no excuses for not wearing safety glasses. If the bottle should shatter, the flying glass could blind you permanently. Prescription glasses are not safety glasses, if you must wear prescription glasses then get safety glasses that fit over them.

2. Face Shield – It is also a good idea to wear a face shield. This will help to protect your face from any flying glass particles. Face shields should be worn over safety glasses, not instead of safety glasses.

3. Gloves – Since you will likely be holding onto the bottle while you are cutting it, you don’t want it to break in your hand and cut you. Some good leather gloves are going to work wonders but you can also wear cutlass gloves or all-purpose gloves.

4. Respirator – There are likely to be some glass dust particles that become airborne. It will be minimal because you will be using water but it is still good to protect your respiratory system. Your best option is to use an N95 or better.

5. Long Sleeves – you could also protect your arms by wearing long sleeves. Hopefully, the glass bottle will stay intact but if it does shatter, you don’t want to be picking glass out of your arm.

The next step of the process is to run water over the bottle as you cut it. Most people will use a Dremel tool for this purpose but you could also use a wet saw.

If you do use a Dremel tool, which incidentally is not recommended by Dremel, do not submerge the tool in water. Just use it to wet down the cutting wheel and keep the dust at a minimum.

After you have successfully cut the bottle and created a glass, you will want to sand the cut edge. This is done with wet sandpaper or you can use your Dremel tool with a grinding bit.

The best option for cutting glass is to use a Dremel tool or tile saw. Doing so allows you to cut completely through the glass rather than only etching it and running the risk of breaking it when you break it on the line.
