If you have an Apple TV, Apple TV is included within your device, but if not, it is a separate entity that is put to work alongside your TV to give you the ability to watch ad-free subscription videos on demand. If movies on Apple TV aren’t working, what can you do?
If Apple TV Movies are not working, try updating the Apple TV app to the latest version, log out and log back into the application, reset your network, reset the app to its original settings, or change the format within the ‘Audio’ to allow for better function.
The appeal behind Apple TV is not only the ad-free content that it is able to offer subscribers, but its ability to work on just about any TV as long as you have devices that are compatible. Apple TV allows subscribers the chance to watch videos, listen to music, play games, and use other applications through its interface, but when it comes to movies, some subscribers have had problems. Read below to find what to do if Apple TV movies stop working.
Apple TV Movies Not Working
Although the ability to find a wide variety of games, videos, and music is a great benefit of Apple TV, one of many subscriber’s favorite perks are the movies supplied through this streaming service. Gone are the days of having to endure long movies full of ads like other apps and satellite TV shows, making the user experience second to none. However, if you go to watch a movie on Apple TV and notice it is no longer working, what can you do?
If Apple TV movies are not working, you may need to update to the latest version of the Apple TV app. To do this, on Apple TV go to ‘Apps’ and select ‘Automatically Update Apps’ then turn on this feature. This will then cause the app to update if any updates are available at the time.
Keep in mind, the Apple TV app should update automatically as long as it is being used with either an Apple TV, a compatible smart TV, or a gaming console, all of which should be connected to the internet. If the ‘Automatically Update’ apps feature is turned off, it will cause the app to wait for any updates until manually prompted, which could be the reasons for the movies suddenly not working.
Downloaded/Purchased Movies Not Showing On Apple TV
When using Apple TV, there will be content that comes to you free, but there will be other content which needs to be purchased and downloaded in order to view. This allows subscribers to customize their Apple TV experience by downloading content that they prefer and enjoy. However, some subscribers have noticed that once the movie has been purchased, it will not appear within the available movies on their Apple TV.
If downloaded or purchased movies are not showing up on your Apple TV, try logging out of Apple TV and back in to allow for a quick reset. Once you have logged out, go back to the sign-in page and input your information. From there, look once more to see if purchased movies are available.
If this does not work and you are still not able to see any of the downloaded or purchased movies on your Apple TV, look and see if you can find the movie in the store within the ‘Movies App’ and play it from there. If you do not see the movie within this app, it is likely that the movie is no longer available.
Apple TV Won’t Play Purchased/Rented Movies
If you are able to download purchased or rented movies, you may be thinking you are right on your way to watching a great plot unfold. Although this would be justified to assume, some Apple TV subscribers have found that once they purchase or rent a movie, although they are able to find and access them, they are not able to play them. If you have recently rented or purchased a movie on Apple TV but it will not play, read below for a few solutions.
If Apple TV won’t play purchased or rented movies, check the System Status page for service interrupts that may be causing the stall. If this is not the problem, it may lie within your network connection. To see if your network is the problem, try using another device to see if the internet is functioning properly.
If you notice that on other devices, such as your phone or computer, that the internet is lagging and causing things to slow, try rebooting your modem or router. To do this, simply disconnect them directly from the power source and allow them to sit for 60 seconds before plugging them back in. Give them time to reboot and once they are back in working order, try to play movies once again from Apple TV to see if they play without issue.

Apple TV Movies Not Loading/Opening
Once you get to the movie that you want to watch within Apple TV, there may be a brief period of time where the movie loads as it catches up with your network. This should only take a few seconds, but if you notice that the movie is stuck on the loading page for minutes at a time and will not open up and play, you may be wondering what could cause such an inconvenient issue. If the movies on Apple TV are not loading or opening, read below.
If Apple TV movies are not loading or opening, this could be a simple network issue that can usually be resolved by resetting your modem or router (see previous section, “Apple TV Won’t Play Purchased or Rented Movies”). If this does not work, you may need to reset the app to its original settings.
To reset the Apple TV app to its original settings, open the app and go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Reset Apple TV and Apple Music’ > ‘Reset Apple TV app.’ This will confirm your choice and cause the reset to ensue, but keep in mind that this will sign you out of your account on that particular device and will remove any personal information. Once it has been reset this way, you will need to input your personal information once again.
Apple TV Movies No Sound/Audio/Volume Not Working
When watching a movie on Apple TV, you want the picture to be crystal clear with plenty of pixels so that you can see every tiny shadow, glimmer, and tiny movement that make great movies so great. However, if you have a great picture with no sound, there is way too much left to the imagination, making users of Apple TV wonder how to fix such a confounding problem.
If your Apple TV movies have no sound, no audio, or the volume is not working, check first to make sure that your TV has not been accidentally muted. Once this has been confirmed, go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Video and Audio’ > ‘Audio Format’ > ‘Change Format’ > ‘On.’

Another option will then appear below it called ‘New Format’ and it will show Dolby Digital 5.1 as default, which should then be chanted to ‘Stereo.’ Once this has been changed, try to play your movie again and see if the sound issue has been resolved.
