Are you having problems with your Asus Chromebook? Here’s how to fix it when it isn’t turning on.
Remove External Devices:
Remove anything that is plugged into the Chromebook, including USB devices and memory cards. If the computer restarts, plug them in one at a time to find which external devices are causing the problem.
Extended Charge:
Sometimes, you must charge the Chromebook for at least an hour before it turns on. This is true when you first use the Chromebook or after an extended time when it was running on battery power.
Reasons Asus Chromebook Won’t Turn On
Chromebooks are relatively simple machines, but they can still experience problems occasionally. When they won’t start, what can you do?
Although possible problems exist, certain issues are more likely to occur. We have limited them to eight different problems, and if you try these one at a time, you will likely find the solution.
1. Problems With The Battery Charger
The battery charger is one of the more significant issues that can occur with a Chromebook. Since it is external, it tends to get more abuse, and sometimes, we may not see the damage until it is too late.
If you feel that the battery charger may be to blame, there are certain things you can do to test it. Try these possible solutions:
Look for Damage – One of the most important things you can do is to look for any physical damage to the battery charger. This is more likely to be seen on the cord, which could be frayed or cut.
Swap out the Pigtail – On almost all Chromebook computers, the charger disconnects from the pigtail. This allows you to replace the pigtail if it has become damaged.
Even if you don’t see any physical damage, try disconnecting the pigtail and plugging it in using a different pigtail. If it works, you have found the solution.
If the damage is to a part of the cord permanently attached to the brick, you must replace the charger.
Check for Continuity – It is possible to check the power cord for continuity. You can do this using a multimeter. If you have continuity, then the problem is likely something else.
Try a Different Cord – Most Chromebooks plug in using a USB-C connection. You can sometimes charge a Chromebook using a regular phone charger that you would use for an Android device.
If you have any problems with the battery charger, you will have to find another way to charge it or replace the charger.
2. Problems With The Internal Hardware
Although Chromebooks are relatively stable, they do experience problems from time to time. Some of those issues can be internal and difficult to fix.
If you dropped the computer or any other sudden impact occurred, it could have damaged internal hardware that would cause these problems. If so, contact tech support or return the Chromebook for repair.
Like any other computer, there are many working parts on the inside of the Chromebook that could experience problems. If the Chromebook isn’t starting and there is no other noticeable issue, especially with charging, then it is likely an internal problem.
If it is an older Chromebook, you can open it using the screws on the back panel. You can then test some of the interior components and you may even be able to repair it.
Just be aware that if you do remove the screws, you could also void the warranty. It’s better to avoid opening the Chromebook that way if possible.
3. Problem With Connected Device
Do you have any devices connected to your computer? If so, one of those could be causing the problem.
Some devices that could be connected to your Chromebook include a wired mouse, secondary keyboard, additional monitor, printer, or scanner.
Unplug everything from the Chromebook and see if it will restart. You may need to drain the battery completely and recharge the Chromebook before this works.
At this point, it is hit-and-miss which of the connected devices was causing the problem. Sometimes, it’s a matter of plugging the devices in one at a time and restarting the Chromebook to see if it works.
On rare occasions, a combination of connected devices can lead to the difficulty. You will just have to experiment to see what is causing the problem and then find a solution for it.
4. Problem With Installed App
One of the things we appreciate about Chromebooks is the available apps. They can do almost anything and you could even install apps, at times, that are also available for your other mobile devices.
Sometimes, apps can cause problems that would even keep your Chromebook from starting. This is difficult to diagnose, especially if the Chromebook isn’t starting.
If it starts and then crashes, you can try removing any additional features you added to the Chrome browser. You might also try deleting one app at a time until you find the one that is causing problems.
The issue with apps causing difficulties with starting a Chromebook is that it isn’t always the newest app you installed. Sometimes, an older app gets an update that causes problems.
You will just have to try one app at a time until you find the one that is the culprit. Otherwise, you could do a full restart if you don’t mind setting things up again.
PRO TIP: Sort your apps by date rather than alphabetically. Try removing the apps that were recently installed or updated first.
5. Issues With Chrome OS
The Chrome operating system is not as old as other operating systems, such as Windows or Linux. They are still trying to add features to make it more user-friendly, but sometimes it causes problems.
Sometimes, the operating system will update in the background without any prompting from you. It is a setting that allows it to happen.
Although Google does their part to make sure everything is covered before the updates take place, there may be some computers that have apps installed or other issues that cause a conflict.
More than likely, a problem with the Chrome OS is not going to cause a computer to completely die. It is more likely that the computer will start and crash frequently.
If that is what is happening that is not allowing your Chromebook to start, then the operating system may be to blame. You can roll back the operating system to a previous install or you can do a hard reset, known as a power wash.
If you do decide to do a power wash, be aware that all of your information is going to be deleted. This includes any pictures or documents you have stored on the Chromebook.

6. External Hardware Interference
One of the features that we enjoy about Chromebook is that it can connect to other devices wirelessly. It does so over the Wi-Fi network or Bluetooth if available on your Chromebook.
Although this is convenient, the fact that you are wirelessly connected can also cause problems. If you are connected to something that is causing interference or if there is something nearby that is interfering, it can keep your Chromebook from starting fully.
This is one of the often overlooked issues with Chromebooks and other computers. Often, we are looking for a simple solution but this can be rather complex.
The first time I ran into this problem when troubleshooting a Chromebook, it took me hours to determine the issue. I was so busy looking for a rogue app or software update that I missed the possibility of radio interference. It is now one of the first things I consider.
If you have anything nearby the Chromebook that could be causing the problem, move it from the area. Sometimes it is easier to move the Chromebook to a place without interference.
Medical equipment can cause this type of interference, as can microwave ovens or anything that is connected wirelessly.
You may even want to try disconnecting your router temporarily to see if anything on the network is causing the problem.
7. Chromebook Battery Has Failed
Like any other type of battery, the Chromebook battery can fail. A Chromebook battery is internal and is not easy to replace or repair.
If you have noticed that the Chromebook battery life is shortening, it may have now failed completely. Some Chromebooks will start by being plugged in, even if the battery is dead, but that isn’t the case with every Chromebook.
If you have tested everything, then you may want to consider the possibility that you need a new battery. Many Chromebooks are easy to open using the screws on the back panel, but be careful you aren’t voiding the warranty in the process.
It’s always better to contact the computer manufacturer and discuss the possibility that it may be covered under warranty before you try this work on your own.
8. Chromebook Needs Reset (Power Wash)
Finally, there may be times when the Chromebook needs to be reset. Perhaps it has too many issues, and the errors have compounded to the point where it continually crashes and will not restart.
If that is the case, you can do a power wash. Before you do so, make sure that anything you can back up is backed up before you reset because it will be cleared during the process.

To do a power wash, sign out of the Chromebook account and hold the Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R buttons. You will be prompted to restart which you should do.
Another prompt box will appear, and you can choose Powerwash in that box. After continuing, you will go through the steps of signing into your Google account and, eventually, wiping all data from the Chromebook.
After doing a power wash, you will be back to factory specs. If any of the problems causing your computer to not start properly were software or operating system related, they would likely be fixed at this point.
Restarting your computer in this way is not something that should be taken lightly. Always make sure that you try every other option before doing a power wash.

Chromebooks are fantastic computers with a good price point and are easy to use. There may be times when they don’t turn on, but the problem is usually easy to fix.
A battery without charge is the most common reason a Chromebook won’t turn on. After plugging in the Chromebook, allow the battery to charge for a few minutes before trying to restart the Chromebook. Otherwise, it may not fully start.
