Dell Laptop Screen Flickering Problem

A flickering screen on your Dell laptop can quickly become an annoyance that can leave you scratching your head. What could cause the flickering? More importantly, how do you stop the Dell laptop screen flickering problem? The good news is that this problem can typically be fixed with a simple solution that will take only a few moments.

When your Dell laptop screen is flickering, change the computer’s power to high performance and then restore back to its default settings. This will correct the flickering problem that you have been experiencing.

Bring up the Run program by pressing the Windows logo key at the same time as the R key. Then enter powercfg.cply into the Open box and click on Enter. This will bring up the Power Options. Toggle the High Performance button and then click on the ‘Change plan settings’ link. This will bring up the Edit Plan Settings box. Click on the ‘Restore default settings for this plan’ link and then click Yes to confirm this action. You will also need to restart the computer before the changes take effect.

Dell Laptop Screen Flickering When Not Plugged In

Dell laptops have a Dell Intelligent Display feature that monitors the light levels in the background. This feature automatically adjusts the screen’s brightness based on the light conditions, which helps extend battery life. Unfortunately, sometimes it can continuously adjust the screen brightness, which causes the screen to flicker.

When a Dell laptop screen is flickering when not plugged in, it is usually caused by Dell’s Power Saving Technology feature. Thankfully, this issue can be easily corrected by simply disabling the Dell Intelligent Display feature.

To disable this feature, go to the laptop’s Control Panel and then click on Power Options. Find the Dell Extended Battery Life section, which is typically located on the left-hand side of the screen, and untoggle the Dell Intelligent Display button. Click on OK to confirm the action. A restart of the computer is not required for the action to take effect. Keep in mind, however, that disabling means the battery may be drained much quicker than if  the setting was left on. This is because the feature helps to conserve battery power when the laptop isn’t plugged into a power source.

Dell Laptop Screen Flickers When Plugged In

No matter how hard you try, you are sure to handle the laptop a little too rough at times. Because of this, it isn’t uncommon for the wiring in your Dell laptop’s keyboard chassis base to become damaged or loose. When this occurs, it can cause your screen to flicker even when it is plugged in.

When your Dell laptop screen flickers when plugged in, it is usually caused by damaged or loose wires. Check to see if this is the cause by raising and lowering the laptop screen several times. If it flickers when performing this action, the issue is with the wiring on the keyboard.

Unfortunately, there isn’t an easy fix for damaged or loose wiring, and the wiring will need to be replaced or reconnected. If you’re not sure how to replace a keyboard chassis and wiring, consider taking the laptop to a computer repair store for assistance. If the laptop is still under warranty, reach out to Dell customer service for assistance.

Dell Laptop Screen Jumping

Dell laptops with Windows 10 installed often have screen jumping issues. This issue is typically caused by one of two problems. Thankfully, neither of these problems are too serious and won’t require a trip to a repair shop.

A Dell laptop screen jumping that also has Windows 10 installed is usually the result of an incompatible app or a display driver problem.

Check to see if the laptop’s Task Manager flickers. If it does, then the issue is a result of the display driver and will require fixing. If it doesn’t flicker, then there is an incompatible app causing the problem.

Rolling back the driver will typically correct the screen flickering caused by the Display Driver. This is done by bringing up the Device manager and then clicking on Display Adapters. Select Properties from the Display Adapters section and then click on the Driver tab. Select the Yes button next to Roll Back Driver, and then restart the laptop.

If, however, the issue is caused by an incompatible app, you will need to determine what app is causing the issue, and then either update or uninstall that app. Trying to figure out what app is causing the issue can be difficult. Try to remember when the screen jumping first started and think back if you had recently installed an app around that time. If so, then that app is probably your culprit.

Dell Laptop Screen Keeps Blinking

A blinking screen can be extremely frustrating, especially when you’re trying to work from home or enjoy the newest computer game. While you may think your laptop is going bad, the issue is probably a lot less serious and something you can fix in a few seconds.

A Dell laptop screen that keeps blinking is typically caused by an incorrect refresh rate. Most LCD panels have a recommended refresh rate of between 30 and 60Hz. Gaming laptops have a higher refresh rate of 120Hz or 240Hz.

To fix this problem, simply change the refresh rate of your laptop. Right mouse click on the laptop’s screen and click on Display Settings. Click Advanced Display Settings and then find the Refresh Rate section. Set the rate to 50Hz and then confirm the changes.

Dell Laptop Screen Going On and Off

It can be alarming when your Dell laptop screen keeps turning on and off. Especially if you’re not sure what could be causing the issue. Is it something serious that will require replacing the entire laptop? Or is it something that can be corrected without shelling out a bunch of money?

A Dell laptop screen going on and off is caused by either the power-saving settings or your battery level is too low. You can easily adjust your battery settings to stop the laptop from automatically turning the screen off to conserve power.

If you want to change the battery settings to increase the amount of time between activity and when the laptop automatically goes to sleep, navigate to the battery saver settings or the power and sleep settings, and adjust the time when the laptop goes to sleep.

Dell Laptop Screen Colors Messed Up

A laptop screen with messed-up colors can leave you wanting to pull your hair out. After all, it doesn’t cause the computer to not work, but it does cause frustration and can even make your eyes feel more tired and your head hurt. So how can one fix a Dell laptop screen that has distorted and messed up colors?

If the Dell laptop screen colors are messed up, restarting the computer will usually correct the problem. As with any piece of technology, glitches happen and restarting the device is typically all that is required to make the colors look crisp and vivid once again.

If the computer colors still appear messed up and faded ever after restarting, the issue may be due to a setting in Windows 10 or Windows 11. These two operating devices have an HDR (High Dynamic Range) setting that utilizes the HDR capable in the laptop screen. The downside to this is that applications that are not HDR content will appear faded and dull. What’s even worse is that, if you turn off HDR, any content that is HDR will then appear distorted and over saturated. The best way to prevent this is to only turn on HDR when you’re viewing HDR content.

Dell Laptop Screen Goes Grey with Lines

Laptops, including those made by Dell, are not immune to glitches and system failures. This is, unfortunately, the nature of the beast known as technology and electronics. The good news is that in most cases, these glitches and system failures are not a major concern and can be easily corrected.

When your Dell laptop screen goes gray with lines, this issue is typically caused by a simple glitch that causes the laptop screens to short out. Thankfully, you can correct this issue by turning off the laptop and clearing out any residual power from the computer.

Turn the laptop off, remove any items plugged into it (such as a USB driver or external mouse), and remove the battery. Then press the power button and hold for 20 seconds. This helps to clear any remaining power in the laptop. Reinstall the battery and reconnect any items you removed, and then turn the laptop back on. The gray lines should be gone once you restart the laptop.

Dell Laptop Screen Scrambled

Black laptop on the desk table

No one wants to turn on their laptop and be faced with a scrambled screen. Not only is it a frustrating problem, but it can quickly put a stop to any plans you had for the day. What’s even worse is that a Dell laptop with a scrambled screen could signal that there is an issue with the LCD screen’s hardware.

If your Dell laptop screen is scrambled, run the LCD Bist test to determine if there is a video distortion issue. If the test determines there is a hardware failure with the LCD screen, then you will need to contact Dell directly for assistance in fixing the problem.

Shut down the laptop. While you turn the laptop back on, press and hold down the D key. This will start the colored screen test, which checks for video distortion problems. If the screen fails the test, reach out to Dell Technical Support to learn about repair options in your area. If the laptop passes the test, that means the LCD hardware is functioning properly and the issue is probably due to incorrect video settings or outdated software.

Dell Laptop Screen Not Centered

A display that shifts to the right or left on the screen is not an uncommon problem with laptops. While annoying, this issue is something that can be fixed by simply adjusting a setting.

A Dell laptop screen that isn’t centered is usually caused when the desktop position is set incorrectly in the computer’s Display settings. This issue can be corrected by simply adjusting the desktop’s position.

Navigate to the Display settings and then click on the Adjust Desktop Size and Position. Find the position tab and then move the arrow until the display is centered. Click on Apply to confirm the changes. If that doesn’t correct the problem, look at your screen resolution and screen refresh rate, and adjust as needed.

Dell Laptop Screen Not Clear

Black laptop on the desk table

A blurry screen is not a fun thing to deal with. It can make reading text on the screen difficult and takes the enjoyment out of watching funny cat videos online. Thankfully, the issue with a blurry screen is usually due to the laptop’s screen resolution.

To fix a Dell laptop screen that is not clear, simply change the screen resolution in the computer’s control panel. The ideal screen resolution for laptops is 1366 x 768 for lower quality computers, and 1920 x 1080 for higher quality computers.

Bring up the Control Panel and then click on the Appearance and Themes tab. Then click on Display and locate the Display Properties section. Select Settings and then find the screen resolution section.

If the screen is still blurry after changing the resolution, then the issue may be with the DPI scaling enhancements in some Windows operating systems. When this feature is enabled, it can cause some text inside applications to appear blurry. You can correct this issue and make the screen clear by disabling the display scaling in the application’s properties. To do this, right mouse click on the application’s icon and click on Properties. In the Properties screen, click on Compatibility and then check the Disable Display Scaling on High DPI Settings box. Click on Apply to save the changes.
