When your Dell laptop cannot detect the battery, it won’t charge. This can leave you in a pickle, especially as the battery level on the computer continues to drain. Unfortunately, laptop batteries can be a bit expensive, and sometimes you just don’t have the extra cost in your budget. Thankfully, there is a way to reset the battery on your laptop.

To reset a Dell laptop battery, you will need to reset the battery by removing the battery, as well as all the cords, and then restart the computer. This will not only reset the battery, but it will also fix the issue the laptop is having detecting said battery.

Power down the laptop and remove its power cord. If you have any other items plugged into the laptop, make sure to remove those as well. Carefully flip the laptop over and push the release button to remove the battery from the back of the laptop. Plug the power cord back into the computer and then into the power outlet. Turn the laptop back on without the battery being attached. Let the laptop boot up entirely. Shut down the laptop once again and then remove the power cord from the computer. Install the battery back onto the computer and reattach the power cord. Turn the laptop on and let it boot up completely. This will reset the Dell laptop battery.

If the laptop is still having battery issues, the problem may be with the battery itself. Laptop batteries usually die way before the computer has issues, and it is not uncommon for laptop owners to replace the battery more than once during the life of the computer. If you can turn on the laptop when connected to an outlet, then you should consider purchasing a new battery.

How To Reset A Dell Laptop That Won’t Turn On

Black laptop on the desk

A Dell laptop that won’t turn on is never a good sign. In fact, it could mean that there is an internal issue with the computer that will require the assistance of a computer repair technician, or a complete replacement of a new laptop. Before you get too upset, however, there is a possible solution that isn’t only simple, but is rather quick as well.

To reset a Dell laptop that won’t turn on, performing a hard reset typically solves the issue. Make sure to remove all devices connected to the laptop before performing the hard reset.

Remove the battery, power cords, and even other devices connected to the laptop, such as webcams, USB drives, or media cards. Press the power button on your laptop and hold for 20 seconds. This drains any residual power left in the laptop. Attach the power cable and the battery to the laptop, and try to turn the laptop on.

If the laptop still won’t turn on, check to ensure the power cord is not frayed or damaged. Also, check to ensure the wall outlet that the laptop is plugged in to is functioning properly. If no damage is found and the wall outlet is working, your next step is to identify the symptoms.

Check the LED indicator on the AC adapter. If the light is off, then reach out to Dell Technical Support for assistance with repair options. If the AC adapter light is on but the laptop still won’t turn on, run the M-BIST diagnostic test.

Some Dell laptops feature the M-BIST (Motherboard Integrated Self-Test), which is a self-diagnostic test that can help identify certain failures. This test can be initiated on Dell laptops that won’t turn on. To run the test, press and hold down both the M key and the power button. Look at the battery status LED light during this process. If no error is found, the LED light will stay off. If, however, there is an error, the LED light will turn an amber color. If this occurs, reach out to Dell Technical Support for further assistance.
