Frigidaire Dishwasher Lights Flashing and Won’t Start

Man fixing the dishwasher

So you’ve gotten the dishwasher loaded up, and you’re ready to wash the load of dirty dishes. When you turn it on, all the lights start flashing, and it just won’t start running. There are several different troubleshooting options to get past this that we will explore.

If your Frigidaire dishwasher lights are flashing and won’t start, make sure the dishwasher door is shut completely. If so, reset the dishwasher by unplugging it or flipping the breaker. If it’s still flashing, something more sinister (like a faulty dishwasher part) could be the issue.

The first thing to try is resetting the dishwasher. You can do this by flipping the breaker or by unplugging the unit if you can reach the power source. Leave it off for around five minutes before powering it back up.

Occasionally, you may have to cycle through the breaker multiple times. The first time is not always successful.

Once you have done these steps, power the dishwasher back on and attempt to select a wash cycle. If it still doesn’t work and the lights continue flashing, move on to the next step.

As simple as this may be, you need to ensure that the door is shut completely. Check all the crevices to make sure no foreign objects are blocking it from closing tightly.

Inspect the door latch to ensure that it still works. You may find that the latch has gone bad and needs to be replaced. There is also the possibility that the sensor is faulty on the door latch, causing the machine to think the door is open.

Blinking lights could also indicate a faulty heating element. The heating element is critical for your machine to run correctly as it heats the water and the air inside the unit. You can use a multimeter to help you determine if the heating element has continuity or needs to be replaced.

You also could have a faulty drain pump. As with the heating element, you will use a multimeter to determine if the drain pump has continuity. If it does not, you will need to replace it.

Your dishwasher’s touchpad may not be functioning correctly. You can test it by pressing some of the buttons to see if they respond. If some respond correctly and others do not, the touchpad is no good.

Finally, you can attempt to enter diagnostic mode on the touchpad. By pressing a specific combination of keys, you can enter this mode and reveal the code behind the flashing lights. Then by cross-referencing the manual, you should be able to find the real cause of the flashing lights.

Frigidaire Dishwasher Start Light Flashing

Modern dishwasher in the kitchen

You finally got the dishes pre-washed, loaded into the dishwasher, hit start, and…it won’t start.

There are several reasons why your start light could be flashing on your Frigidaire dishwasher:

  • The door was opened mid-cycle
  • The door was unlatched when the dishwasher was set for a delayed start
  • There was a power interruption mid-cycle
  • You may have pressed the button too many times
  • Child lock feature

There are possible solutions to all of these issues. One of the first solutions is to reset the unit. If the buttons were pressed too many times, the light will blink for 30 – 90 seconds, depending on your model, then allow you to reset the machine.

Hold down the start button for 2 – 3 seconds to reset the dishwasher. Confirmation of the reset will come in the form of a beep. If the reset function does not work to start the dishwasher, either unplug it or flip the breaker to do a hard reset.

If this still does not work, check if the door is open or the child lock is on. Some models of dishwashers will turn off all other processes until the child safety lock feature is disabled. To disengage the function, follow the manual and press the appropriate button, which will most likely be the child lock button or the power button, for a few seconds.

If it was not the safety lock, check if sleep mode is on. If it is, press and hold the correct button per your manual (usually the resume or cancel button) until the sleep mode light turns off.

Check if your door was left unlatched with the delay start time set if you have the option. The start light will flash in this situation.

Frigidaire Dishwasher High Temp and Heat Dry Lights Flashing

Man fixing the dishwasher

Sometimes the Frigidaire dishwasher “High Temperature” and “Heat Dry” lights flash at the same time. This error usually occurs mid-cycle and this is the reason:

When the high temp and heat dry lights start flashing together, the dishwasher has likely experienced a power failure. Dishwasher power failures are not uncommon, so start by resetting and waiting. If that doesn’t work, you may need professional help.

If you are using the dishwasher and the power goes out, you will most likely deal with a power failure situation. You need to hold the cancel button for a few seconds until the light goes out.

Leave the dishwasher alone for five minutes. Then try turning it back on.

You can also try turning the dishwasher off and letting it sit for a few minutes uninterrupted. When you turn it back on, it may have cleared the error.

If neither one of these reset methods has worked, you may need to try a hard reset with the circuit in your house. Unplug the washing machine or flip the breaker. Wait five minutes and then turn it back on.

Power failure can also be the result of internal damage to the dishwasher. Following the previously discussed reset methods for power failure may work in this situation if the damage is not too significant.

Severe damage may require professional repair.

The high temp and heat dry lights may blink even when the unit is working. This disparity can be related to a bad control board. Unfortunately, replacing the control board does take some work.

You will first have to switch off the breaker. Use a screwdriver to detach the inner door from the outer door and remove all the mounting screws along with the latch. Then remove the latch by unfastening the screws.

Find the control board cover and remove the screws. You should be able to see the wires connecting the board to the machine, and you will need to disconnect these wires from the control board.

Once the wires are disconnected, remove the screws holding the control board in place. Take out the old control board and set it to the side. Get the new control board, attach it in place of the old one, and reconnect the wires. Now it’s time to reattach the cover, the inner door, and the latch. Once you power up the dishwasher, the blinking lights should be gone.

Frigidaire Dishwasher Clean Light Flashing

Modern dishwasher in the kitchen

The next most common flashing indicator on the Frigidaire model is the “Clean” light.

A broken, damaged, or burnt-out heating element is the most common cause of the Clean light blinking.

Is the light flashing repeatedly?

Won’t turn off no matter what you try?

The dishwasher could be trying to tell you that the keypad or some circuits could have shorted out.

Is the light flashing in sequence, not repeatedly?

This could signal a wiring or heater drive circuit problem.

First, try resetting the dishwasher. If your control pad is faulty, you will have to replace it. Some models will require the changing of the control panel with the touchpad.

If there are excess suds or foam, you will need to remove them as the machine can detect them and affect its ability to run.

Scoop out the excess with a plastic cup. Empty the dishwasher and run an empty cycle to clean out excessive soap. Avoid the use of soaps and detergents that are not made for dishwashers.

Frigidaire Dishwasher Washing Light Flashing

Modern dishwasher in the kitchen

So you were smack-dab in the middle of a washing cycle and your Frigidaire dishwasher’s “Washing” light started flashing? Here’s what that means:

When your Frigidaire dishwasher’s washing light is flashing, there could be an issue with the volume or temperature of your water. It can also mean too much suds or foam in the tub.

The machine will not operate as long as this light is blinking. The first fix you will want to try is resetting it. If the reset doesn’t work, there are several other options to try.

Ensure enough water is flowing into the machine. You’ll need to check the amount of water in the tub before the cycle starts washing. It will need to be deep enough to cover the heating element.

If there is no water flowing into the dishwasher, you must ensure the supply valve is open. If it is open, then the dishwasher’s inlet valve will need to be replaced.

You will need to ensure your installation was done correctly. For instance, if your drain hose is draining water from the tub, there will not be a high enough volume of water to clean the dishes.

If there is a buildup of foam or excess suds, you will have to remove them following the steps outlined above.

Frigidaire Dishwasher Washing Clean Sanitized (All 3 Lights Flashing)

Modern dishwasher in the kitchen

This is what it means if all 3 lights (“Washing”, “Clean”, and “Sanitized”) are flashing on your Frigidaire dishwasher:

When the washing, clean, and sanitized lights all flash simultaneously, it can be an indicator that the flood switch has been activated. You will find the emergency pan has suds or water in it. Typically, this is caused by overflow from suds or an incorrect drain hose setup.

The drain hose should be placed as high as possible to prevent the sink from backing up into the dishwasher and prevent regular dish soap residue from entering the dishwasher.

If you use the wrong kind of detergent, it will cause excessive suds to overflow into the pan. You can try using a wet/dry vac to drain the pan. Otherwise, you may have to maneuver the dishwasher around and tip it back to drain the pan.

If you have recently replaced your garbage disposal, double-check that the plug has been removed where your dishwasher’s hose connects.
