Whirlpool washers may sometimes have a problem with excessive beeping. It does happen as part of normal operation, but it can also be due to certain problems.
Door Not Closed
If you are trying to start a load and your Maytag washer beeps at you when you push a button, it might be letting you know that the door is not closed properly. The easiest way to fix this problem is to close the door, but there may be more to it.
Sometimes, the door is closed but the door switch is not operating properly. The door switch lets the control panel know that the door is closed or open so that it can either start or stop operation. If the switch is failing, it may think that the door is open at all times.
You might also have a problem with the door latch. This is sometimes seen in the middle of the cycle when the machine stops and starts because the pressure of the wash forces the door to open slightly.
Wrong Cycle
Another possibility is that you are trying to do something that is not part of the cycle that is currently selected. A good example of this is if you are running a delicate cycle and are trying to add hot water. The beeping will let you know it is not a possibility.
It is always best to know the limitations of your washer and the different cycles that are available. You can then use them to your advantage.
Top Reasons Why Your Whirlpool Washer Is Beeping
We rely on our washing machines every day. When we have laundry to do, we expect that we will just put the laundry in dirty and take it out clean. There are times, however, when problems occur and this may lead to the washing machine beeping. What can you do if your washer is beeping?
The most common reason why a washer is beeping constantly is due to the lid not closing properly. Regardless of whether it is a front load washer or a top load washer, this issue can lead to a persistent beeping sound and it may stop the machine from working.
Fortunately, this problem is not always difficult to fix and you may find that it is one of the easier issues to repair on a washer. That being said, there are some things to check before you just go and decide that it is the only problem you’re experiencing.
For example, if you have a washer that is beeping, it may just be a normal part of the operation. Sometimes, washers beep to let you know that you pushed a button, that the load is starting, that the load has paused, or the load has finished.
Some washers will give you reminder beeps, such as what may be necessary if you need to put some fabric softener in. These beeps are a part of the normal operation of the machine and they should not be confused with any random beeps that may be part of an error.
Of course, most manufacturers realize that you may not want to hear the beeping continuously so they make it possible for you to turn the sound off. Sometimes, they may even have a single dedicated volume button that will mute the beeps until you press it again.
This can be a convenience and it is a good idea if you want a quieter home, such as if your baby is napping or even if you are napping. At the same time, however, you don’t want to miss the possibility that something has gone wrong and would need to be fixed.
Fortunately, there is usually a difference between muting the beeps that are a normal part of the operation of a washer and stopping the washing machine from beeping due to an error. Even if you have the machine muted, it will likely continue to make the sound when problems occur.
Let’s take a look at some of the top reasons why a washer is beeping. These are issues that can be checked on almost any machine, regardless of the manufacturer.
We will also look into three different things that you can do quickly and easily to stop the beeping in almost every case. These can really help you to silence the machine and to get it working properly again.
Reasons Why Your Whirlpool Washer Is Beeping
When it comes to reasons why your washer may be beeping, the possibilities are practically endless. At the same time, however, there are some things that can be done that will fix the problem in many cases. Here are 7 different things to consider:
1. Lid Not Closed – This is the number one reason why a washer may be beeping. If the washing machine sensors determine that the lid is not closed, then it will make the washer beep and it will not resume normal operation.
This is more than just a convenience to let you know that the machine is not operating properly, it’s a matter of safety. Your washing machine is not designed to operate with the lid open because that could be harmful if something got stuck in the machine, such as your arm or fingers.
There may also be times when the machine is beeping with the lid open and it is also operating. This should be a huge red flag and if you are experiencing it, unplug your washing machine and contact a repairman.
2. Clogged Water Intake – Obviously, we need our washing machine to fill with water in order for our clothes to be washed. Without water, we are not going to have clean clothing.
Water comes into the machine through a limited number of means, which essentially are a hot water and cold water line that then enters the machine and is filtered before being released inside.
If there is anything stopping the process, your machine may beep because it is not receiving the water that is needed. Water levels that are low can cause damage to the machine so you can be thankful they are running.
If you do have this problem, check the incoming water hoses for any damage, kinking, or other issues. Perhaps the water got turned off at the valve. You may need to replace the hoses or at the very least, clean them to ensure that they are not clogged.
3. Running a Large Load – Although we want to get our laundry done as quickly as possible, it is always best to avoid adding too much laundry to the washing machine. We need to know the limitations of the machine and then stick to it.
If there is too much in the washing machine, it could also become unbalanced and may start bouncing around and making a lot of noise. If it is just beeping, however, it may be that the newer model of washing machine has detected that it is overloaded and will stop it from operating to protect the machine from damage.
Fortunately, this is one of the easiest problems to fix. If you have too much in the washing machine, simply unload some of the clothing until it stops beeping.
4. Drainage Problems – There may be times when the washing machine is not draining properly. This is often seen when the laundry comes out of the washer soaking wet or if it is taking longer and longer to dry in the dryer.
Sometimes, drainage problems can also cause more issues than continual beeping. If there is water in the machine and it runs through all the cycles, it may continue to be locked in order to protect your safety.
You can check the drain line by removing the hose and cleaning it with a garden hose. Turn the garden hose on full and run the water through the drainage hose to see if it is blocked. If the drainage hose is kinked or bent, this should also be resolved.
5. Unstable Machine/Load – Stability is a very important part of having your washer run as it should. If the machine is not stable, you are going to have problems that could cause damage to the machine and will certainly cause it to beep.
This issue can sometimes be seen if you did not load the machine properly. Always load the machine evenly and if you are cleaning a larger item, such as a blanket, make sure that it is not lumped all to one side.
It isn’t only the load that can be unstable, however, the machine itself may also be experiencing a problem with stability. This is something that is easily repaired.
Grab a level and check to make sure that the machine is level by placing the level on the side and front of the machine. If it isn’t level, use the adjustable legs to fix it so that it is sitting on a level and solid base.
6. Software Error – Any time you hear a beeping in the washing machine, one of the first things you should do is check for an error. These typically appear on the control panel display and may vary from one unit to another.
Often, this is your first indication that there is a problem with the machine. You can check the owner’s manual that came with the machine or look it up online to cross-reference and see what the error means.
This may also be something that can be corrected by turning the machine on and off. Rather than just pushing the power button, unplug the machine or turn off the circuit breaker and wait five minutes before reestablishing the power again.
When you do this, you will likely be resetting the error message and the beeping may stop temporarily. If the issue that is behind the error message and beeping continues to be a problem, however, you will have to fix that issue eventually.
7. Faulty Control Board – Although this doesn’t happen very often, it is something that can be a problem on almost every washer. The control board is the brain behind the washer and if it is experiencing problems, then error messages and beeping is likely to take place.
You can’t easily test the control board with a multimeter, but you can make sure it is plugged in properly. The first thing that you do is to shut off the power to the machine by unplugging it or turning off the circuit breaker.
Once the power is off, open the machine and check the control board. Inspect it carefully for any burnt circuitry or cracks. Check the wires for any damage. Unplug and replug the pigtails to make sure that they are seated properly.
If you see any damage to the control board, it should be replaced with a new one.
Things You Can Try To Fix Your Whirlpool Washer Beeping
If you have a problem with your washer beeping, there are a few things you can do to fix the problem in almost every case. These are the three easiest fixes and they are not specific to any washer.
1. Reset the Washer – It may be necessary to reset the washer. There is not typically a reset button included on any washing machine, so you will have to do it manually.
Unplug – The first step in the process is to unplug the washing machine from the wall. If you don’t have easy access to the receptacle, you can turn off the circuit breaker for the washing machine. Verify that it is off by pressing buttons on the control board and looking for lights.
Wait – It is best to wait at least five minutes before plugging the machine back in again. This gives enough time for the machine to dissipate any energy that is in the circuitry.
Reestablish Power – After waiting five minutes, reestablish power by turning on the circuit breakers or plugging in the machine. Allow the machine to go through the entire startup process and the error should be gone.

2. Reload the Washer – It may sound like a simple solution, but it is one that can often work wonders when beeping and error messages come out of the blue.
Rather than just trying to remove one or two pieces of laundry, remove all the laundry and carefully put it back into the washing machine again. Be cautious that you don’t get any type of uneven load and don’t overload the machine.
You might try doing half of the wash first to see if it corrects the problem. If you are able to do the load at a much lower level, then you realize that you probably overloaded it on the first run.
3. Check the Lid – One of the most common reasons why a washer beeps is because the lid is not closed properly. This is a safety feature on your washer that keeps you from getting injured when your arms, hands, or fingers are in the machine.
On top-loading washers, one of the easiest pieces to damage is the lid switch. It is a simple piece of plastic and most people tend to slam the lid, so the lid switch can get broken easily. It only costs a few dollars to replace, so it may be worth replacing it.

On front loading washers, there is also a switch that signals the control panel if the lid is closed or not. If the switch is going bad or if the door latch is not operating properly, the machine may come open temporarily while the load is running.
This can cause the machine to shut down in the middle of the load but it can also cause beeping if the door is constantly opening and closing just enough to signal the control panel. You can check the switch and latch visibly or with a multimeter.
We will now take a look at some of the specific types of washers and the different options that can cause them to beep unnecessarily.
