Whirlpool Refrigerator LED Lights Not Working

My Whirlpool refrigerator has been working really well, but recently the LED lights inside the fridge stopped working. So, I looked at all the help documents and the user manual to figure out how to fix it, and here’s what I found.

The steps to fix the LED lights on your Whirlpool refrigerator are:

  1. Check that the door hasn’t been open for a long time
  2. Inspect the door switch that controls the LED light
  3. Double check the wiring harness is connected
  4. Power cycle your Whirlpool refrigerator
  5. Get a replacement LED light.

If you try each of these and it’s still not working, then it’s best to get a refrigerator repair person to fix it for you.

You also may not have much hands-on experience, and doing some of the steps may be too difficult for you. But, if you can use a screwdriver, you should be able to perform all the checks above yourself. Below, I will explain each of these steps in detail so you know exactly what to do:

Whirlpool Refrigerator LED Lights Not Working (Off or Out)

When your refrigerator LED lights aren’t working, it can be difficult to see what’s in your fridge especially at night time, when you only have a few lights on. So, how do you generally fix the LED lights when they aren’t working?

The LED light is turned on and off by a small switch that is located on the hinge of the door. It gets pressed in when you close the door. It may be broken, so it’s best to inspect it first. Otherwise the wiring or the bulb might be broken.

There are some steps to try in order, they are:

Step 1: Check that the door hasn’t been open for a long time

If the door has been open longer than 10 minutes the light will turn off automatically to save power. If your door isn’t completely closed then because something is blocking it, the light can stay on.

Then when you open the door the light stays off. Therefore, you should inspect the door switch.

Step 2: Inspect the light switch that controls the LED light

The light switch is typically located on the top of a Whirlpool fridge and has a label that says light switch.

Have a quick look for it, if you can’t find it then you should have a look at the user manual for your fridge, which you can find on the Whirlpool website. However, it’s always located somewhere where the door touches as it closes against the rest of the fridge.

The switch may be broken, and spring in the tab that gets pressed in as the door closes to turn the light on and off may be broken. As a result, the tab doesn’t get pressed in or bounce out as the door opens and closes.

Step 3: Double check the wiring harness is connected

To check this is only possible if you’re fairly good with your hands. As this step involves removing one of the panels on your fridge to get to the wiring underneath.

The LED light plugs into the main power board of the fridge. The plug looks a little different to a standard plug that you plug into a wall outlet at home. However, it works in exactly the same way.

Whirlpool recommends checking the wiring harness when your LED light isn’t working, but says that it’s more likely to happen if you recently moved your fridge which can cause it to be shaken loose.

Step 4: Power cycle your Whirlpool refrigerator

Refrigerators are similar to devices like TVs, smartphones, and computers, and simply turning them on and off again can fix a large percentage of issues.

Simply, turn your fridge off at the wall. Pull out the plug, then wait for around 30 seconds to a minute. Then, plug it back in and turn the wall outlet on.

After that, check to see if your LED light is working now.

Step 5: Get a replacement LED light

If none of those solutions worked for you then, replacing your LED light is fairly straightforward. The entire compartment that houses the light can be unscrewed, lifted out, and unplugged from where it plugs.

A new one can then be plugged in, put into place, and screwed in. If it sounds a bit too difficult, much like step 3, where you check the wiring harness, then it’s best to get a technician in to fix it for you.

But, if it sounds like something you could do, you can order a replacement part online. You may try Ebay, or a specialist website that sells Whirlpool parts, and then use your manual and/or some videos online to replace it yourself.

Whirlpool Refrigerator LED Lights Flashing/Blinking

Your LED light may not turn on at all. And instead blinks on and off. To fix this issue here’s what you should do:

Generally, this is related to the wiring that connects to your LED light, or the wiring in the bulb. The component that holds the LED light including the wiring is replaced when the light is broken. But, it’s also possible the plug that the LED light connects with is loose.

When that happens the plug connects and disconnects, and the light turns on and off. It’s also possible the light switch that turns the LED light on and off when you open and close your fridge is broken.

If it is, it could be stuck in between the on and off position and turns the light on and off randomly.

The steps to fix all of these issues have been outlined above, and are the same when your LED light doesn’t work again. So, scroll up to the top to step 1 that says ‘1. Check that the door hasn’t been open for a long time’.

Whirlpool Refrigerator LED Lights Dim

The LED lights in your fridge or freezer can also appear dimmer than normal. There is no switch to turn them up or down, so the LED lights need to be replaced.

Generally, this is always caused by the LED light itself being faulty. All of the lights in a Whirlpool refrigerator are connected in a series. Therefore, if one LED light is faulty, it can cause the other lights to be dim.

It may be necessary to order 2 lights to verify whether 1 or all the lights are faulty. For example, if the light in your fridge is faulty it can cause the freezer light to be dim. But, if you replace just your freezer light it might not solve the issue.

Various master technicians recommend replacing the light in question first, and see if that fixes it. If not, you’ll need to order another light for the fridge or freezer to figure out which light is faulty.

It can be possible that the issue will be resolved by turning your fridge on and off, and it is very fast and easy to do. Simply unplug your fridge at the wall, and wait for 30 seconds or more. Then, plug it back in.

If that didn’t work, then you should order a replacement part online, and replace the LED light yourself. Or, get a technician in to repair it for you.
