Dell Monitor Camera/Webcam Not Working

Using Black Monitor on the desk

Whether you are working from home, have online schooling, or are keeping in touch with loved ones, a webcam is a must these days. Are you experiencing issues with your Dell monitor camera? What can you do when your Dell monitor camera/webcam is not working?

If your Dell monitor camera/webcam is not working, make sure the application you are using has permission to access the camera. A recent update could have changed the app’s default permissions and the app no longer has access to the camera.

Oftentimes the solution to why the Dell camera/webcam is not working is a simple one. If the issue persists, this article will walk you through some other ways to troubleshoot the problem.

Antivirus Software

Antivirus software keeps our computers safe but they sometimes do too good of a job. Sometimes the antivirus software can block applications from accessing the camera. The only way around this is to temporarily disable the antivirus software.

Webcam Driver

An outdated driver can adversely affect the camera. Drivers provide the most recent data applications need to work correctly. When the data is outdated, the driver will stop working.

You can go to Dell.com to see if any driver updates are available. The website will provide instructions on how to manually download and install the latest driver. Installing a new driver is a bit of a process but thankfully there are applications available that make it easier.

One such application is called Driver Easy. Driver Easy is a free application that will automatically examine your system and find any outdated drivers.

Step 1: Download and install ‘Driver Easy’.

Step 2: Run Driver Easy.

Step 3: Click on ‘Scan Now’.

Step 4: Select ‘Update’ to automatically scan and install the most recent driver.

Step 5: After the drivers have been updated, restart your computer.

Step 6: Do a webcam test to see if the camera is now working.

App Permission

Sometimes the issue with the camera has nothing to do with the camera. A privacy setting in apps requires that you give permission for the app to access your monitor camera. If the app was not given permission, the camera will appear to not be working.

The following steps will walk you through how to turn on this permission for apps.

Step 1: Go to the Windows Start menu.

Step 2: Click on ‘Settings’.

Step 3: Select ‘Privacy’.

Step 4: Click on ‘Camera’.

Step 5: Under the option ‘Allow apps to access your camera’, toggle the switch to ‘On’. You should now see an image on the webcam.

Dell Monitor Webcam Not Detected/Recognized

Using Black Monitor on the desk

You need to start a video conference call but the camera is not even detected. What can you do when the webcam is not detected/recognized?

If the Dell monitor webcam is not detected/recognized, make sure the camera app is turned on. Click on the Windows Logo and type in ‘Camera’. Open the camera app and make sure the app is working. You should see a live view of yourself when the camera is working.

Sometimes the very thing that keeps our computers safe is the thing that causes applications to not work. The privacy settings on the camera could cause the camera to be undetectable to the computer’s operating system.

BIOS

Another place to troubleshoot issues with the webcam is by enabling the webcam inside the BIOS. BIOS is Basic Input Output System. Every time the computer is started, BIOS runs a scan of every operating system within the computer.

BIOS performs hardware initialization when the computer is starting. If the BIOS is not able to access the camera, the start-up process will not be completed and the camera will not be deemed functional.

The following steps will walk you through updating the camera through the computer’s BIOS.

Step 1: Turn off the computer.

Step 2: Power on the computer.

Step 3: When the Dell logo appears on the screen, press the F2 control key.

Step 4: Click on ‘System Configuration’.

Step 5: Scroll down and select Miscellaneous Devices’.

Step 2: Click on ‘Suspend Protection’.

Step 3: Click ‘Yes’ to confirm.

Step 4: Go back to Windows Search.

Step 5: Select ‘Support Assist’.

Step 6: Navigate to ‘Drivers and Downloads’.

Step 7: Click on ‘Run Now’.

Step 8: Support Assist will automatically show all available updates.

Step 9: Click on ‘Install’ to install any available updates.

Step 10: Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process.

Reinstall Webcam Driver

Step 1: Right-click on the Windows logo and select ‘Device Manager’.

Step 2: Right-click on ‘Imaging Devices’.

Step 3: When the box expands, select ’Uninstall Device’.

Step 4: Device Manager will remove the current camera driver. Once the process is complete, restart your computer.

Step 5: When the computer restarts, the missing webcam driver will be automatically reinstalled.

Step 6: Test the webcam to see if it is now working.

If you continue to have issues with your Dell webcam, contact a Dell Technical Support Technician for additional assistance.

How To Troubleshoot Dell Monitor Camera/Webcam Not Working

Using Black Monitor on the desk

There are a variety of reasons why the camera/webcam on a Dell monitor is not working. Before you start considering purchasing a new computer, here are some simple steps to try.

Camera Lens Screen Cover

Newer models of Dell computers come with a camera lens screen. Gone are the days of putting stickers or post-it notes over the camera when we don’t want to be surprised when we’re not camera ready.

There is now a screen built-in to the monitor that you can slide over the camera. The camera is blocked and there is no longer the risk of a sticky residue being left behind. If the camera appears to not be working, make sure the camera screen is not closed.
