Dell Monitor Speakers Not Working

If the Dell monitor speakers are not working, there could be audio playback issues due to incorrect audio settings, or corrupt audio drivers. Inspect the audio ports and cable for damage. Use a can of compressed air to clean the audio ports.

It can be very frustrating when the monitor speakers are not working. There are a variety of reasons why this happens. This article will address some of those reasons and how you can troubleshoot the problem.

Dell Monitor Speakers Not Working Mac

You want to increase the sound quality of your Dell monitor so you decide to connect your Dell monitor to your Mac. What does it mean when the Dell monitor speakers are not working when connected to the Mac?

If the Dell monitor speakers are not working when connected to a Mac, connect the speakers to the audio line-out jack. Make sure the Mac is set to regular stereo rather than a multi-channel. If using a USB soundbar, use the USB in addition to the HDMI audio cable.

USB soundbars are managed directly from the source, which is why the USB connection has to start with the Dell computer. If the audio stops working when you connect an HDMI cable, the computer is switching between the two audio sources.

Try using the HDMI cable to connect to another audio-capable HDMI source to see if the cable does indeed support audio. Oftentimes audio issues are the result of a faulty or incorrect HDMI cable than the monitor speakers themselves.

Dell Monitor Speakers Not Working Windows

We are no stranger to video conferencing apps such as Zoom and Skype. These apps require a working camera and speakers. What can you do when your Dell monitor speakers are not working in Windows?

If your Dell monitor speakers are not working in Windows, click on the audio symbol at the bottom of the screen to make sure the speakers are turned on and not muted. Right-click on the speaker icon and select ‘Sound Settings’. Select ‘Choose Where to Play Sound’ > ‘Speakers’ or ‘Add Device’.

If the speakers are all on and connected you can run the built-in troubleshooter within Windows to further diagnose the issue.

Step 1: In the control panel search bar type in ‘Troubleshoot’.

Step 2: Select ‘Troubleshoot Settings’.

Step 3: Scroll down and select ‘Troubleshoot’.

Step 4: Select ‘Other Troubleshooters’.

Step 5: Under the heading Most Frequent, select ‘Playing Audio’.

Step 6: Click on ‘Run’.

Step 7: The computer will begin running self-diagnostics. Follow any on-screen instructions or prompts during the process.

Step 8: Restart the computer and test the speakers.

Device Manager

If the issue was not resolved after running the Troubleshooter, you can manually update the speaker drivers.

Step 1: Right-click on the Windows logo and click on ‘Device Manager’.

Step 2: Expand the‘ Audio Inputs and Outputs’ section.

Step 3: Right-click on ‘Speakers’.

Step 4: Select ‘Update Drivers’.

Step 5: Select ‘Search Automatically For Drivers’.

Step 6: Once the drivers are updated, restart your computer, and test the speakers.

Dell Monitor Speaker Noise

Your Dell monitor speakers are working but you are hearing a low hissing noise coming from the speakers. Why is the Dell monitor speaker making noise?

If the Dell monitor speaker is making noise, inspect the audio cables for any signs of damage. Make sure the cables are tightly connected to the correct audio port. Adjust the volume within the computer’s audio settings. Plug the speakers directly into a wall outlet instead of a power strip.

It can be annoying when you hear a constant buzzing or humming sound from the speakers. If the noise is heard when the speakers are not actively in use, the internal speakers of the computer need to be adjusted.

Right-click on the speaker icon and open ‘Sound Settings’. Scroll down to ‘Advanced’ and select ‘Volume Mixer’. Adjust the volume settings accordingly.

If the noise persists, refresh the speakers by disconnecting them then reconnect them again. Make sure you are using a newer audio cable that can support the audio output.

Dell Monitor Speakers Not Detected

It can be extremely difficult to determine the reason why the speakers are not working if the computer cannot even detect them. Why would the Dell monitor speakers not be detected?

If the Dell monitor speakers are not detected, the computer may be behind in recent Windows updates. Install pending Windows updates in Settings > ‘Update and Security’ > ‘Windows Update’ > ‘Check for Updates’. After the updates are installed, restart the computer to refresh everything.

Updates are crucial to the performance and security of our electronics. When an update is late in coming or has not been fully or correctly installed, the outdated data will confuse the computer’s operating system and it will not work correctly.

System Restore

A system restore will refresh the computer’s operating system. You can either refresh Windows without losing files or do a hard reset, which will result in losing all personal files and preferences.

The following steps will walk you through the process.

Step 3: Select ‘Reset This PC (System Setting)’.

Step 4: Select ‘Get Started’.

Step 7: Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

Step 8: Once the reset process is complete, the computer will automatically restart.

Factory Reset

A factory reset will return the Dell computer to its original default settings. The computer’s operating system will be wiped clean and will be set to factory settings, the same as when it was first purchased.

The type of reset will delete everything that was added to the computer – apps, photos, bookmarks, saved settings, everything. Before starting, make sure you have all your information backed up to a secure location that you can access to reinstall on the computer after the factory reset.

Step 1: Click on the Windows logo and type ‘Reset’ into the search box.

When the monitor speakers are not working, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to hear or be heard. If the speakers are not working on your Dell monitor, there are some ways to troubleshoot the issue before you call Tech Support.

Restart Computer

Restarting the computer will resolve most minor software glitches in the computer’s operating system. The memory will be cleared and any apps or programs that are not working correctly will be shut down.

Before you restart the computer, bookmark any web pages you are working from. Save documents, spreadsheets, or any other program you are working in.

Microsoft Sound Troubleshooter

Microsoft Windows comes with preprogrammed troubleshooters that are designed to diagnose and resolve many software issues. The troubleshooter will not resolve hardware issues but it gives you a place to start when trying to figure out why something is not working, such as the monitor speakers.

Here are the steps for running the troubleshooter on Windows 10 and 11.
