I’ve been using my Fire TV stick for a while and love how easy it is to use, but I recently noticed when I was trying to watch HBO Max it wouldn’t work. I looked at all the help information available from HBO and here’s what I found.
Start by closing HBO Max, then clear the cache, and finally restart your Fire TV stick. To close HBO Max go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Select HBO Max > Select Force Stop and then Clear Cache.
Hopefully, that has fixed the issue, if not then you should restart your Fire TV stick. Below, I will explain how to do that as well as the other fixes to do if it still doesn’t work after you try that.
Firestick HBO Max Not Loading
An issue you can run into that can be really frustrating is that HBO Max won’t load at all after you select it. Here’s what you should do to get it working again.
Start by hard resetting your Fire TV stick. Simply unplug it at the wall while it is turned on. Wait for 60 seconds and then plug it back in. After that check that you have a solid internet connection. After that you should attempt to force close the app, and clear the cache.
Below I will provide exact instructions about how to complete each of these steps
1. Check your internet connection
If your internet connection is running slowly or has limited connectivity then it can cause any apps that connect to the internet to not work properly. The easiest way to check your internet connection is typically to attempt to connect to the same network using your smartphone or computer.
Use one of these devices to go to Youtube and attempt to watch a video. If it loads up just fine and you can watch videos on Youtube then your internet is fine and you should attempt the next step.
If your internet is running slow it can be fixed by turning the modem on and off again. And failing that, get in touch with your internet service provider to troubleshoot your internet issue.
2. Force close the app & clear the cache
Force closing the app restarts it fresh which can solve a host of issues with apps. And it is a good thing to try with your HBO Max app. At the top of the screen is a menu, navigate to Settings using your Fire TV stick remote. Then select ‘applications’, after select ‘manage installed applications’, and then scroll through the list of apps until you find HBO Max. Select it and then select force stop, followed by ‘clear cache’.
Now open up HBO Max and see if it works now.
3. Manually restart your Fire TV stick
This step is very easy, hold down the home button on your Fire TV stick remote and the select button – the big round black button. Hold both buttons down until it says that your Fire TV stick is restarting.
Wait for it to start back up and open HBO Max again.
4. Uninstall and reinstall the app
Start by holding down the home button, a menu will pop up and one of the options is apps, select that. It will bring up a menu showing all the apps you have installed on your Fire TV stick.
Move the cursor so that HBO Max is selected and then press the button with 3 horizontal lines. That will bring up another menu. From that menu select uninstall. Wait for it to uninstall and then reinstall it again by going to the Apps option on the top menu.
Then see if your HBO Max is working now.
HBO Max App Not Showing up/Available on Firestick
Another common issue that occurs with HBO Max on a Fire TV stick is that it’s not listed as one of the apps. This is very easy to fix.
You first need to download HBO Max from the app store. To go to the app store use the menu at the top of the screen and select Apps. From there search for the HBO Max app, and select it. After that there will be the option to install it.
Select that and wait for it to install. If you have an existing account use that to log in, otherwise create a new account using the menus that come up when you open the app for the first time.
HBO Max is also not available in all countries, but HBO Max is rolling out to what appears to be most countries and add more and more countries each year. A full list of the countries can be accessed by going to the official HBO Max website.
Firestick HBO Max Won’t Download or Install
When downloading an app on your Fire TV stick it will typically just begin straight away. However, in certain cases an app just won’t download at all. To fix this issue here’s what you should do…
A bad internet connection commonly is the cause of HBO Max to have an issue downloading. Check that the internet connection to your Firestick is stable and has good speed. If your internet connection is not the issue, then restart your Fire TV stick.
I have included step by step instructions for how to do that above in the section titled 3. Manually restart your Fire TV stick.
HBO Max Keeps Freezing/Crashing on Firestick
It can be common when there is an issue with an app for it to freeze and crash. The method to fix is to:
Force stop the HBO Max app, then open the HBO Max app again to verify if the crashing issue has gone away. If it has not, then you should clear the cache, and manually restart your Firestick. Finally, uninstall and reinstall the HBO Max app.
