Unfortunately, an easy fix is not always going to take care of the problem entirely. There may be times when you have to dig a little deeper and find out the reason why it is happening rather than simply looking for a quick fix.

Quite honestly, it can be due to a lot of different reasons and if you don’t find the right reason at first, it just means that you have to try something else.

The good news is, the black screen of death is not something that is typically an occurrence with most Samsung TVs. It does happen from time to time, and if it happens to you it can be very frustrating.

What is behind the black screen of death is often going to tell the real tale as to why it needs fixing in the first place.

How To Fix Samsung Tv Black Screen Of Death

As we spoke about earlier, a restart of your Samsung TV is the most important thing to consider when you experience the black screen of death. It is the first line of defense when this happens.

To overcome the black screen of death with your Samsung TV, you have to perform a soft restart of the TV. Doing so will not affect your programming or anything else, but it will remove the error messages and the black screen of death.

Follow these step-by-step instructions to restart your TV properly.

1. Unplug – removing the power source for your TV is the first step in the process. Unplugging the TV is the obvious way to do this but sometimes, you don’t have easy access to the receptacle.

If that’s the case, you can restart your TV by using the circuit breakers. Access the circuit breaker panel and turn off the circuit breaker associated with your Samsung TV. This will disconnect the power as well.

2. Dissipate – The power button on the TV remote control should be pressed and held for 30 seconds. Do this while the TV is disconnected from the power source.

When you press the power button on the TV, and when you hold it in, you are removing any of the residual energy that is left within the unit. In that way, it will fully restart rather than partially restart.

3. Power up – After unplugging the TV and pressing the power button for 30 seconds, you are ready to reestablish the power again. Do so by either plugging in the TV or turning on the circuit breaker.

You have to wait for the TV to go through the entire startup process. After it does so, the black screen of death should be gone for good.

Here are 10 different things you can do at home to fix the black screen of death on your Samsung TV.

1. Soft Reset Your Samsung TV

This is perhaps the easiest way for a repair to take place on your Samsung TV. It isn’t always going to work, but it is a good first check to make sure that the problem is easy to fix.

Resetting the TV in this way is very similar to rebooting the TV. The difference is, that once you unplug the TV or turn off the circuit breaker, you simply wait a minute and then plug it back in.

The real key to soft resetting your TV is that it resets many of the internal issues. Like any electronic device, glitches can occur over time so doing a soft reset on occasion is all that is needed.

In addition, you probably soft reset your TV every night. Some people turn off the TV using the power button on the remote control and other people allow it to go to sleep.

Try restarting your TV every night by doing a soft reset and you will love how responsive your Samsung TV can be.

2. Hard Reset Your Samsung TV

Performing a hard reset is similar to the soft reset that was just discussed. The difference is that you will dissipate the residual energy by holding the power button.

Began by unplugging the TV. Doing so will power the TV down fully, but you will still have some energy inside of the TV in some of the electronics.

The 60 seconds that you have to wait while the TV is unplugged are enough to get you started. Taking things so the next level during a hard reset is what truly resets the TV.

In order to fully dissipate all residual energy, you should point the remote control at the TV and press the power button. Hold the power button for 30 seconds before releasing.

Something similar can also be done by pressing the power button on the TV itself. You’re trying not to use the energy but rather, you are releasing the energy.

After you plug the TV back in again, you will generally find that the black screen of death is gone. If it shows up again, try a soft reset and if it doesn’t work, try a factory reset like we just did.

3. Verify the Source on Your Samsung TV

As you likely have noticed, there are many different ports on your Samsung TV and if you don’t have the right one selected, you are going to experience a black screen.

This isn’t necessarily the black screen of death, which is one that you may be experiencing but rather, it is just a black screen because of an error on the user’s part.

Look on your remote control and find the source button. When you press that button, it will pop up a display on your TV that shows you all of the different sources that are possible.

On some TV remote controls, the sources button may be labeled as input. In either case, it is the same scenario and the same way of fixing it.

After you see the various sources, you will see that some may have live plugs in them and others may not. This is normal, but what you really want to look for is what source is selected.

Most modern-day Samsung TVs can recognize what is plugged into the port. It may be labeled according to what is plugged in, such as a DVD player, game console, or cable box.

Make sure that you are using the port that is the right source for what you’re trying to do. Otherwise, you may be using the port with a device that is currently powered down and you are seeing a black screen as a result.

If you don’t have this capability on your remote control, you can use the input setting on the side of your Samsung TV.

Typically, you would press the input button on the side of the TV and the input options will display. At that point, you can press the input button multiple times until the proper input is selected.

After it is selected, simply wait for the input screen to go away and you should now be watching whatever was plugged into that port.

4. Verify the Cables Plugged into Your TV

Believe it or not, issues with cables are very common and they can certainly lead to the black screen of death on your Samsung TV.

A common reason why cables cause the black screen of death is because they are not the latest technology. Just like anything else, cable technology increases and improves and you must use the newest technology for it to work.

A good example of this is HDMI. Older HDMI cables look a lot like newer HDMI cables, but they are not going to work the same.

If you are using something plugging into an HDMI port on your Samsung TV, you need to make sure that it is using the right technology. Otherwise, it will not carry the proper signal or enough signal to work.

You should also visually inspect all the cables and make sure that they are not damaged in any way. If cables are cut or pinched, they will not send the proper amount of signal. This can lead to a black screen and a lot of frustration on your part.

If a lot of dust has accumulated on the cable since the last time you worked on them, this can be a problem as well. When you remove the cables, make sure that you dust them and clean them all before using them again.

You should also clean the areas around the port and use a can of compressed air to blow out the ports. This will go a long way in helping you to use the cables effectively.

Now that the cables and ports are clean, and you have verified they are up-to-date, you can replace them. Pay careful attention to how you replace the cables, because it will make a difference.

Many people try to simply put the cables back, thinking that they are not going to see them because they are behind the TV. Crossing cables can be a problem, especially if you plug the wrong cable into the wrong port.

Keep the cables neat and make sure that they are well seated into each port. That way, you will be able to get the proper signal and enjoy your Samsung TV again.

5. Check your Power Settings

One of the convenient options that is on Samsung TVs is the ability to put it to sleep automatically. Many of us use this to ensure that the TV is not on all night long, because we may fall asleep in front of the TV frequently.

Look at the power settings as well as the sleep settings to ensure that you haven’t actually put the TV to sleep. In addition, there may be certain power settings that cause it to power down after another timer has gone off.

You can sometimes reset the power sleep settings by resetting the TV. Unplug the TV, leave it unplugged for 60 seconds and press the power button on the TV remote for 30 seconds. Plug the TV back in and after it starts up, this issue will be gone.

6. Check Your Remote Control Batteries

Although this would be considered a no-brainer by most people, it is something that needs to be called out because it is a problem more often than you believe.

If the batteries to your remote are not working properly, your Samsung TV will not get a signal and it will remain on a black screen. Try replacing the batteries in your remote to see if it corrects this problem.

Along with checking the batteries in the remote, you may want to check the buttons on the remote as well. Sometimes, they get stuck and when they do, the TV may become unresponsive.

To fix the black screen of death on your Samsung TV, it may be necessary to turn off the energy-saving mode. You can do so by going through the settings on your TV, selecting General, Eco-Solutions, and Auto Power off.

After you turn off the auto power-off function, your TV will continue to remain on indefinitely. This is convenient and it may overcome the black screen of death, but you also want to turn the TV off when you’re done watching it manually.

After changing the HDMI port, you also need to change the input. Select input on your remote control and an option box will appear. Choose the new input port and your TV should be running again.

2. Settings – Scroll until you get to the settings menu.

6. Follow – Follow all of the prompts to fully restart your TV. It will reboot and once it starts up again, it will be reset to factory settings.
