HP Laptop Freezes/Crashes After/During Update

You’ve finally accepted that the laptop update your notifications told you about. Now you’re staring at a frozen screen and don’t know what to do. This happens to many people, and it has a solution.

An HP laptop might freeze in the middle of an update because of a software conflict, memory problem, corrupt hard drive, or overheating issue. You could also have outdated drivers or high CPU usage.

We’ll try to help you get through this with the best possible solutions and some troubleshooting advice.

HP Laptop Crashed During BIOS Update

Getting a BIOS update is sometimes necessary to ensure your system runs appropriately. However, it can crash during an update due to incompatibility issues. Your problem may resolve itself if you shut the laptop down and leave it off for a few hours. If not, you can try something else.

If your laptop crashed during a BIOS update, try unattaching everything from it. Flip it over and remove the cover using the appropriate screwdriver. You may need to replace the CMOS battery on the left side of the motherboard.

Replace the battery and reinstall the cover on your computer. When you’re finished, you can go through the process again and try to re-install the BIOS update.

You will need to run a virus scan if you get the laptop running. Your computer should not be crashing in the middle of any updates. Viruses and malware corrupt files and cause such issues, however. You’ll need to pay close attention to warnings about files and have your virus program get rid of any intruders it finds.

You could have a subtle hardware issue that’s causing the problems you’re dealing with as well. If that’s the case, an HP technician can work on it for you. First, you need to run a diagnostic test to see if you do indeed have a hardware problem.

To run diagnostics on an HP, you must turn your computer off. Press “Escape” repeatedly as the computer boots. Click on “Symptom Tests” when you use the hardware diagnostics UEFI menu pop up. Wait while all the tests run and use the information to determine if you need to take your computer in for work.

You might have to install a BIOS update before installing a new Windows version. In doing so, your computer might freeze after it gets to 100 percent and stays stuck. This is a common issue and there is a way out of it.

If your HP laptop freezes during a BIOS update, you’ll need to unplug all of your accessories and hold your power button down for about 40 seconds. Next, release the power button and plugin only the essential items you need. Turn your system back on with the power button.

Your screen may now show a BIOS update window with the “Cancel” and “Update” options. Wait approximately 20 seconds to see if the BIOS update proceeds on its own without having to click “Update.” If so, allow BIOS to update. When the update is complete, your laptop should automatically boot up as usual.

Don’t be alarmed if your HP laptop crashes during a Windows update. Take a deep breath and then take the following steps to figure out what’s going on.

If your HP laptop crashed during a Windows update, your first response should be to force the computer to shut off. Press and hold your “Power” button for several seconds until it shuts down. Wait a few seconds and press the power button to turn the device back on.

Restore Your System

Press the F11 key as the computer boots back up to get into the recovery manager window. From there, you can navigate to “Troubleshooting” and then “Advanced Options.” Select “System Restore” and choose a recovery point that existed before Windows attempted to update. The screen will guide you on how to do that.

Viruses and Malware

Once you get your computer up and running, you should check three areas that might be giving you trouble. The first area is viruses and malware. Run a scan with your anti-virus program to see if there’s anything you should know about attached to your computer.

Unwanted Programs

Remove any programs you don’t need on your computer as they could cause conflicts with the update. To delete programs, you can visit your “Control Panel” and look under your list of items. You can use the filters to view them by file size first to see if you can get rid of any large programs.

Look for Memory Issues

Next, check the amount of memory you have on your computer. A proper Windows update requires you to have enough space. You should have that amount of space plus ample room, or the update could go awry.

Check for Overheating

Next, ensure that your computer isn’t hot or sitting in an area that isn’t well ventilated. That can cause it to crash when CPU use is high during an update.

Inspect the Hardware

Check for hardware issues by repeatedly rebooting your computer and hitting the F2 key. You will see a system diagnostics menu showing itself. Run all the tests it offers to see if all your hardware passes. You may need to send your device to a technician if something fails and you continue to have issues with the Windows update.

Re-Install the Update

Once you’ve taken those steps, your next move is to try to install the update again. You can initiate that process by searching for “Windows Update” in the task bar’s search box and then clicking “Check for Updates.” You’ll then be able to initiate your update and try again.

In some cases, HP laptops accept Windows updates but they act up afterward. You might notice that your laptop freezes a lot now that you’ve updated to the latest software. The problem could have multiple causes, such as conflicting software conflicts, corrupted files, registry issues, outdated drivers, and more.

If your HP is freezing after a Windows update, you can start your troubleshooting process with small tasks. First, look at common issues like having too many windows open at the same time or having too many peripheral devices and accessories attached.

Do a Malware Scan

Run a complete malware scan to see if it tells you about viruses, adware, or spyware. Remove the culprit.

Clean the Registry

Try a registry cleaner to see if you’re having issues with the registry files. CCleaner is one of the most popular programs for cleaning up the registry and hard drive. Thus, you may need to download it and use its features. You can also perform a disk cleanup by clicking your “Start” button and then navigating to “Programs,” “Accessories,” “System Tools,” and then “Disk Cleanup.”

Perform a Hard Reset

See if any of those methods cause your computer to stop freezing. You may have to do a hard reset on your laptop if not. You can initiate a hard reset by removing the power cable from your computer and disconnecting all of the accessories you have attached. Press your power button down for 15 seconds to eliminate any excess energy. Turn the laptop back on when you’re finished. Use the arrow keys to select the “Start Windows Normally” option if you see a startup menu pop up.
