Why My AirPods Are So Quiet

AirPods give us so much more freedom. We can listen to music or a podcast while working in the yard or exercising without having to worry about a cord getting wrapped around our neck or accidentally disconnecting the cord. While they give us freedom, they are not completely stress-free.

Generally speaking, the AirPods will be quiet when there is an accumulation of earwax, sweat, and dust on the speaker. Turn off the power-saving mode of the connected device. Install any pending software updates to the connected device.

AirPods are fairly simple devices that don’t require a lot of attention. If you are experiencing volume-related issues with your AirPods, this article will help you troubleshoot some reasons why this is happening.

AirPods Quiet In One Ear

The benefit of using AirPods is that you can easily wear each earpiece. You don’t have to worry about a cord pulling one earpiece out. That being said, it is quite frustrating when one earpiece is quieter than the other one.

If the AirPods are quiet in one ear, this means the device the AirPods are synced to is in need of a software update. Updates are typically installed automatically but it’s not always flawless. Go to the connected device’s Settings > General > Software Update > Install.

Another reason for the unbalanced volume output is the AirPods need to be charged. When the battery is low, the AirPods will go into energy saver mode and reduce the volume level in an effort to preserve the remaining battery.

Thankfully the AirPods charge quickly so take a few minutes to charge the batteries so you can have hours of enjoyment later. Be sure to check the charging status of the Airpods on the device they are connected to.

AirPods Volume Low

Does the volume seem quieter than usual? Are you having a hard time hearing the music or podcast despite increasing the volume? Here are some reasons why the volume is reduced.

The AirPod volume will be low if the Airpod speakers are covered. This can easily happen when there is a build-up of sweat and ear wax. Use a dry Q-tip or toothbrush to gently clean the rubber earpieces and speakers. Do not get the speakers wet.

While this article is not about self-hygiene, keeping your ears as wax-free as possible is beneficial for your Airpods. Eventually, the Airpods will need to be cleaned, no matter what. But you can reduce the number of times you have to clean them by keeping your ears clean in the first place.

If you wear the AirPods while exercising, sweat gets inside them. The salt from your sweat remains in the AirPod and affects the quality of the sound. Even moisture from the rain can cause a problem.

Another downside to wearing the AirPods while exercising, whether outside or not, is the moisture in the AirPods now makes them little magnets for dust. Clean the AirPods regularly. A Q-tip is easier to clean inside the rubber cover where ear wax and dust can hide.

Be careful when cleaning the AirPods. You do not want to use soap and water as this can damage the tiny speaker inside the AirPods. If you feel the AirPods need some extra TLC, use a Q-tip that has been lightly dipped in alcohol, avoiding the speakers. Only clean the rubber earpiece.

If the AirPods have been exposed to a large amount of moisture, either from wearing them in the rain or worse, getting accidentally thrown into the washer, they could now have hardware issues.

This, sadly, is not fixable. The AirPods will need to be replaced. Once they have been exposed to that amount of water and heat, the damage is irreversible.

How To Increase Volume On AirPods On Android

AirPods are designed to be used in conjunction with another Apple device. But what if you have an Android device? Thankfully you can still use your AirPods with an Android device. You will not be able to use all of the bells and whistles that AirPods come with, but they will work.

You can increase the volume of AirPods on Android by resetting the AirPods. Sometimes the AirPods fail to sync with the Android operating system, affecting the volume output of the AirPods. Resetting the AirPods will resync the volume setting, normalizing the volume output.

Another way to adjust the volume is by disabling the volume setting within the Android device. There are a few steps to this process but it will resolve the issue.

Step 1: Go into the Settings of your Android device.

Step 2: Select System.

Step 3: Select Build Number.

Step 4: Tap on Build Number 7 times. You should get a notification that you are now a Developer.

Step 5: Go back to System and select Developer Options.

Step 6: Turn on Disable Absolute Volume.

You should now be able to control the volume output between your Android device and your AirPods.

AirPods Quiet On Full Volume

Whether you are exercising outside, listening to a podcast on the train ride home, or you are having a phone conversation with someone, you need to be able to increase the volume so you can hear.

If the AirPods are quiet on full volume, turn off the Low Power Mode of the connected device. AirPods have their own battery but if the battery of the connected device is low, the connected device will go into battery saving mode, affecting every device connected to it, including your AirPods.

If the Low Power Mode setting is turned on, the volume in your Airpods should return to normal once the setting is turned off. Since the volume in the Airpods went down to preserve the battery in your phone, don’t forget to charge your phone once you turn the setting off.

Headphones of all varieties – in the ear, over the head, all have a safety mechanism built into them that prevents the volume from getting too high. We want to enjoy what we’re listening to but we don’t want to damage our ears in the process.

Sometimes, though, the audio we’re listening to was mixed at a low setting or we’re in an area that is unusually loud and we have to turn the volume to max just to hear it. This is a problem when your Airpods only let you increase the volume so much.

There is a volume limit setting within your iPhone that you can turn off.

Step 1: Using your iPhone, go to Settings.

Step 2: Go to Sounds and Haptics.

AirPods Are Quiet In Ear But Loud Outside

Woman using an Airpods

AirPods let you discreetly listen to anything. They fit inside the ear. They are small. And yet someone is telling you they can hear what you are listening to. How is this possible?

If the AirPods are quiet in the ear but loud outside, make sure the Airpods are in the correct ears. The speakers inside the AirPods are specifically placed based on the right and left ear. If the speaker is facing out of the ear, instead of in, the volume will seem louder outside of the Airpod.

If you continue to experience volume issues, reset the AirPods to resync everything.

The following steps will walk you through how to reset them.

Step 1: Place both AirPods in the charging case and close the lid.

Step 2: Wait 30 seconds and then open the charging case lid.

Step 3: Go to the Bluetooth setting on your Android device.

Step 4: Find the AirPods and then select Forget This Device.

Step 6: Hold the button until the status light changes to white.

Step 7: Reconnect your AirPods to your Android device.

AirPods Left One Starts Loud Then Gets Quiet

Musical scores speak volumes when notes fade in and out. These changes can calm us, excite us, or make us anticipate what is next. But when our AirPod itself is fading in and out, there is nothing good or calming about that.

If the left AirPod starts out loud and then gets quiet, the left AirPod is losing its battery charge before the right one. When charging the AirPods, make sure each earpiece has its own charging symbol and status indicator. The charging case itself also needs to be charged.

When we are tired or in a hurry, we may not pay attention to how we put the AirPods away in the charging case. If one AirPod is not inserted correctly, it will not fully charge.

Balance Settings

The speakers need to be balanced in order for the sound to come out of both earpieces simultaneously. If this setting has been adjusted, the speaker will favor one side over the other.

Step 1: Go into the connected device’s Settings.

Step 2: Select Accessibility.

Step 3: Select Audio/Visual.

Step 4: Select Balance. Make sure the setting is in the middle.

Game Sounds Quiet Through AirPods

Woman using an Airpods

AirPods are great for gamers. The crystal clear sound from the game makes you feel more a part of the game. And best of all, you are not disturbing anyone.

While updates to our electronics are usually a good thing, sometimes it creates more problems. This has been the case with the recent Windows 11 update. Within that new update, there was a change in codes for audio headsets and it is now affecting your Airpods.

If the game sounds quiet through AirPods, go into your computer’s Device Manager and uninstall any devices your AirPods are connected to. Once the devices are uninstalled, restart your computer. Reset the AirPods. Repair the AirPods with your computer.
