Ice is a hot commodity these days. We use it to cool our drinks, to temper hot chocolate for a beautiful mirror glaze on a cake, or to ease the pain of an aching back. Whatever the need is, we depend on our Samsung ice maker to have ice ready and waiting for us.
The Samsung ice maker will not work if the water supply lines are cross-connected. One hose connects to the water dispenser; the other to the ice maker. Pull the refrigerator away from the wall and make sure the hoses are connected to the correct inlet valves.
While Samsung has a reputation for being a reliable refrigerator, it is not without its glitches. This article will help you troubleshoot some common issues with the Samsung ice maker. The solutions are simple and easy for any homeowner to do.
Samsung Ice Maker Frozen
It may seem like an oxy-moron talking about a frozen ice maker, but this is a real problem. Ice should be frozen, not the ice maker.
If your Samsung ice maker is frozen, check the seal on the freezer door. A tight seal is necessary to keep warm air out. If the seal is not tight, warm air will enter the ice maker, thawing the ice. The ice will then refreeze, forming a giant block of ice.
You can check the seal of your freezer door by closing a piece of paper in the door. If you can pull the paper out without any resistance, the seal is not tight enough and will need to be replaced.
Forced Defrost
Typically the ice maker will defrost on its own but if the freezer is too full or something is blocking the ice maker’s sensor, ice can form on the ice maker chamber and you will need to force a defrost.
Forcing a defrost will not affect the temperature of the refrigerator so there is no need to empty its contents. The steps outlined below will walk you through performing a forced defrost.
Step 1: Remove the ice bucket and place a towel in its place.
Step 2: On the display panel, simultaneously press and hold the Freezer and Cool buttons.
Step 3: When the display panel chimes and the lights turn off, press FF until FD displays. FD means Forced Defrost.
Step 4: The ice maker is now defrosting. The process will take at least 30 minutes and the freezer will continue to beep the entire time it is defrosting. This process will need to be repeated if there is a heavy buildup of ice to defrost.
Frozen Fill Tube
The fill tube is a white plastic rubber-like hose that supplies water to the ice maker. If the ice maker is too cold, this can cause the fill tube to freeze. The first step in addressing this problem is to keep the freezer temperature between -2 and 0 degrees.
If you are not able to do a forced defrost as mentioned above, you can thaw the fill tube with a hairdryer. You will begin by first unplugging the refrigerator and removing the ice bucket. Place a towel in the ice compartment to catch water as it thaws.
If your model of ice maker has a metal clip on the hose, remove the clip so it does not melt the hose as you use the hairdryer. Put the hairdryer on its lowest setting and begin warming the fill tube. Stop using the hairdryer once you see moisture dripping from the fill tube.
Plug the refrigerator back in and adjust the thermostat a few degrees cooler to compensate for the warm air now in the freezer. Replace the ice bucket and turn the ice maker on. Within the next few minutes, you should being to hear the sound of ice being made.
How To Reset Samsung Ice Maker
If your Samsung ice maker is not dispensing ice or is producing an unusually low amount of ice, resetting the ice maker is the first, and easiest, step in troubleshooting this issue. Resetting the ice maker will help to clear any glitches within the ice maker components.
Begin by removing the ice bucket. Press and hold the Reset button on the ice maker until you hear a chime. The ice maker is now in Test Mode and will reset. The test will take about 6 minutes.
After 6 minutes, the ice maker will chime once to signal it has been reset. If you do not hear a chime after 6 minutes, you can unplug the refrigerator from its power source for 2 minutes. After 24 hours your Samsung ice maker will begin making ice.
Samsung Ice Maker Beeps After Reset
Your Samsung ice maker will beep to alert you to an issue. The issue could be something as simple as the refrigerator door is not shut completely or something more serious.
If your Samsung ice maker is beeping after being reset, make sure the refrigerator doors are closed completely. Check the seal for any obstructions or bending of the seal that could prevent a tight seal. Once a tight seal is established, the beeping will stop.
Beeping could also be an indication the temperature inside the freezer is too high. Adjust the temperature to a lower setting. Samsung ice makers work best when the temperature is between -2 and 0 degrees.
If beeping continues, the issue could be with the thermometer or cooling system. Fixing these issues is more difficult and involves disassembling the refrigerator. Contact a local Samsung service technician to fix these issues.
Samsung Ice Maker Making Noise
It is normal for an ice maker to make noise – even new ones. But if the noise is so loud it is interfering with your conversations or your movie night, it is problem that needs to be addressed.
Popping Sounds
As the temperature within the refrigerator rises and falls, the plastic components of the ice maker contract and expand, making noise. This is more common when the fridge is new and will fade in time.
Humming Sounds
Your ice maker will make a humming sound when water is filling the waterline. If the water pressure is too high, the humming will be louder than usual. You may also be hearing the compressor working, which sounds like a motor.
Whistling Sounds
If the refrigerator is in a tight spot that is preventing it from getting adequate circulation, the circulation fan has to work harder and you will hear a whistling noise. Reposition the fridge, making sure there are at least 2 inches of clearance on the top, sides, and back.
Clicking or Buzzing Sounds
Clicking or buzzing could mean the ice maker is not connected to water. Make sure the fill tube is connected to the water supply line. Adjust the water pressure to ensure water can reach the ice maker.
Samsung Refrigerator Ice Maker Leaking
A puddle of water beneath the ice dispenser may seem like a simple diagnosis but requires a little investigative work. Water could be coming from various places. Here are three possible reasons why your Samsung ice maker is leaking.
The Samsung ice maker will leak if the water pressure is too high. If too much water is coming into the ice maker, it will overfill the ice tray and leak out of the freezer. Pull the refrigerator away from the wall and adjust the water pressure valve to decrease the pressure.

Ice Jam
Ice that remains in the chute can begin to thaw, causing drips from the chute. Melt any ice by pouring warm water into the chute. Use a wooden or silicone spoon to remove the thawed ice.
Ice Maker or Fridge Not Level

A Samsung ice maker that is jammed is never a good thing. It is usually not until we need ice that we are aware of an issue.
As we discussed earlier in this article, any time there is a buildup of ice within the ice maker it is important to check the thermostat. If the temperature is too warm, ice will continue to form on top of itself, forming an ice block.
One way to make sure the ice maker is not malfunctioning is by pouring ½ cup of water into the ice maker reservoir. If ice forms, the ice maker is functional. If ice does not form, there is a mechanical issue with the ice maker and you will need to call a Samsung technician to repair the ice maker.
If the Samsung ice maker is jammed, the auger motor could be frozen. The auger rotates to dispense ice from its mold into the ice bucket. If the motor is frozen, ice will not be released into the bucket and will continue to build in the ice tray.
