The Microsoft Surface recently has become a popular tool amongst all sorts of different people. Teachers and college students are using them along with some professional sports teams such as the NFL. Unfortunately, some have reported having issues with different features.

If your Microsoft Surface is experiencing HDMI problems check the connections. Run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter to update the graphics driver then restart your Microsoft Surface and plug HDMI back into the port for connection.

Many times when your Microsoft Surface isn’t working properly, the graphics card driver needs to be updated. To do so, press the Windows key + R and type devmgmt.msc, click Enter and the Device Manager will launch and select Display Adapters. Find your graphics card and right-click on it and choose Update Driver as this should fix most issues if not working properly.

Among some of the common issues using the Microsoft Surface, one of the most common involves the HDMI connection. Fortunately, this appears to be an easy fix for even the most novice computer users out there.

If your Microsoft Surface HDMI is not working follow these steps to correct it.

Step 1: Check the HDMI connections, unplugging and plugging back in

Step 2: Run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter

Step 3: Update the graphics driver

Step 4: Restart your device and connect all HDMI cords again

If a few different troubleshooting steps are not successful, then there may be another issue you are dealing with. It could be a hardware or software issue or it could be something as simple as a bad HDMI cord. If that is the case, a new one can be purchased at most retail stores these days.

Microsoft Surface HDMI No Sound

It was a game-changer when HDMI technology came out, eliminating the use of multiple cords for audio and video down to an all-in-one cord. Occasionally Microsoft Surface users have found a glitch with producing no sound while video seems to work with no issues.

If your Microsoft Surface HDMI is producing no sound, go to Control Panel, Hardware, and Sound, then select Sound. Locate the Playback tab and choose Digital Output Device. Find the HDMI on the list and Enable it, select Set As Default, and then Apply.

For those who have an Android T.V. and are having trouble with sound, check the signal format on the T.V. settings to see if it is set to Enhanced, you will need to switch it to Standard. To do so, select the External Inputs, then select HDMI Signal Format, select the correct HDMI option (some have up to 4), and then switch to Standard Format. Keep in mind that each HDMI port has specific settings so the steps will need to be repeated for each you are wishing to change.

A common issue that users are finding with the Microsoft Surface is the issue with the HDMI adapter. This would allow for multiple monitors and other connection features with your Microsoft Surface.

If your Microsoft Surface HDMI adapter isn’t working, as a general rule start by checking the video input settings. Next, check the video port on the external screen or device and its cables then duplicate or extend the display on the external display.

If you are wanting to use your Microsoft Surface but need a large number of people to see what you are displaying, there is an option for this. The Surface comes with capabilities to connect to a larger screen such as a T.V. or even a projector, all you need is the right cable and adapter. You will need one of the following to successfully perform this feature, an HDMI cord or an adaptor allowing USB-C to HDMI and the HDMI cord.

Microsoft Surface No HDMI Port

For most devices today, there are a few different connection options underneath or on the backside of the device. The HDMI ports have become increasingly more common on most devices but still, if you may find a newer device that doesn’t offer an HDMI port, then what?

If your Microsoft Surface has no HDMI port then you will need an adapter. You will need a USB-C to HDMI adaptor and an HDMI cable to connect to most other devices. If that doesn’t work then you will need a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and HDMI cable.

Depending on what external device you are wanting to connect your Microsoft Surface to will determine which option you’ll need. For most large screens, an HDMI cord is all you need, however, on some models of the Surface there isn’t an HDMI port. If this is the case, you’ll need the USB adapter and still the HDMI cord.

If you want to connect to more than one external device you will need the Microsoft Surface Dock. To do so, connect both the monitors to the Mini DisplayPort to the dock.
