The thermostat that controls the temperature of your home can malfunction, and resetting it can fix many issues, especially those to do with the functioning of the digital display. I’ve done a bunch of research into how to fix thermostats so today I’ll share how to reset every kind of thermostat there is.

First turn off your thermostat, and then disconnect the power by turning it off at the fusebox, wait for 10 seconds and then turn the fuse back on. After that, turn the thermostat back on. The off button can be on the digital display or located on the sides of the thermostat.

If you’ve never used your fuse box before it’s not too difficult at all once you know how. Below I will explain how to use the fusebox to disconnect the power to your thermostat. Then I’ll explain more detailed instructions for each of the different thermostat brands in case you’re having issues with this general method.

How to Reset Thermostat

There are various ways to perform a normal reset and a factory reset on a thermostat due to the wide range of brands of thermostats. But, in general there is one broad method that will reset any thermostat regardless of the brand. Here’s how to do it.

You should disconnect the power, and reconnect it again. Generally, it’s recommended to turn the thermostat off first. Then disconnect the power at the power to it at the fusebox, also called a switchboard. Turn the fuse back on, and then turn your thermostat back on again.

As you may know, the fuse box is the main control point for power to the different wall outlets around your home. A thermostat is generally wired directly into the mains, and doesn’t have a wall outlet you can switch on and off. Therefore, the only option is to turn it off at the fuse box. If you don’t know how to do it, it’s very likely someone in your household will know. Honeywell makes a wide range of products to increase the comfort of your home. All of their thermostats are digital, and like all electronic devices they can have a glitch and need to be restarted. Here’s how to do a factory reset as well as a standard reset.

There are 3 different Honeywell thermostats: a Lyric Round thermostat, a Lyric t5 thermostat, and a Wi-fi smart thermostat. Each is a little bit different but for all of them you want to go to the menu, then select factory reset or reset.

Because each of the Honeywell thermostats are a little bit different, below is the info for each different of the 3 types of Honeywell thermostats.

The ‘>’ symbols mean after pressing or navigating to that option then choose the next option after the > symbol. For example where it says Menu > Preferences. First go to the menu and then select preferences.

How to Reset Nest Thermostat

A Google Nest is part of a Google Home setup. When it has a malfunction it can be helpful to restart it, and if that hasn’t helped then you should do a factory reset. Here’s how to restart your Google Nest – the way that doesn’t delete any settings or data.

Press and hold the ring on the outside of your Google Nest until the screen goes off. This usually takes about 10 seconds. This turns off your Google Nest completely. Turn it back on by pressing the ring on the outside of your Google Nest again. It will load and then return to the homescreen.

If that hasn’t solved the issue you’re having with your Google Nest or Google Home, then it’s a good idea to do a factory reset. However, this does delete any of the data and settings.A lot of the data on your Google Nest can be a bit annoying to reprogram in. After that, here’s how to factory reset so you know how to do it, but after that I will explain how to back up the info for it.

Touch the side to open the menu, then scroll down by swiping down on the right edge of your Google Nest to the cog wheel icon and touch the side again to open it. This is the settings menu. Scroll down to the last item which is ‘factory reset’. Touch again to select it and then select ‘reset’.

How to Reset Emerson Thermostat

Remove it from where it’s seated on the wall to access the rear of the thermostat. Remove the batteries for 2 minutes and then put them back in. To factory reset it you need to press and hold various buttons which differ by model. Instructions for how to do it for your specific model are below.

Removing the batteries will reset an Emerson thermostat but in some cases this doesn’t fix the issue you’re having with it, and you need to do a factory reset. To see how to do a factory reset refer to this page on the official Emerson website and search for your model number.

How to Reset Lux Thermostat

Lux is quite unique in that they mostly only sell thermostats. Therefore, it’s safe to assume they’re very good at it. If you need to reset it to fix a glitch, or want to remove all the settings to return it back to the original settings, here’s instructions for how to do a reset, and/or a factory reset.

Take the front part of the thermostat off, and on the part you removed look for a small round button that has written next to it H.W. reset. Hold the H. W. reset button for 5 seconds until it resets. To do a factory reset hold the S. reset instead of the H.W. reset button.

When doing a normal reset be careful not to press the S. reset button by mistake, as it can be a pain to add all the schedules and preset settings you had before. A factory reset is generally only necessary if you’ve done a normal reset and you’re still having issues with your Lux thermostat.

How to Reset Ecobee Thermostat

You can either reset everything, reset just the registered account, or reset the schedule and preferences. On the thermostat select ‘main menu’, ‘settings’, ‘reset’, and then either ‘reset all’, ‘ reset schedule and preferences’, or ‘reset registration’ depending what you want to do.

How to Reset Lennox Thermostat

Resetting a Lennox thermostat is very straightforward but can be a bit confusing without the proper instructions. Here’s how to do it according to the official owners manual. On the home screen there is a Lennox logo on the bottom right hand corner. Touch and hold this for 5 seconds. A warning message will appear on the screen that asks you if you want to proceed. Press the reset button on the pop up to restart it.

The warning message is there to stop the thermostat from being restarted if the buttons to reset it were pressed on accident. But, since you’re sure you do want to reset it, and the reason you’re pressing and holding the buttons is to reset it, then you can ignore this message.

How to Reset Trane Thermostat

I found it very difficult to find the instructions for how to reset a Trane thermostat. I found the official website says to reset it to solve any issues you have but after a lot of searching I couldn’t find it on their official website. I finally found out how to do it, and here’s what you should do.

On the home screen select the menu icon, the select settings, after that press the reboot button, and then select yes. It will take some time to load, and then it will reset itself for 1 to 2 minutes before returning to the home screen.

This method only works for a Wi-Fi trane thermostat, if you have a different type of thermostat I recommend getting in touch with the Trane support team through their official website.

How to Reset Dometic Thermostat

Dometic makes a wide range of products including thermostats. Their thermostats have a very simple design. Exactly how to reset them requires a special combination of buttons. Here’s what it is:

Press and hold the temperature up button, and the ‘on/off mode’ button until two dashed lines next to each other show on the screen, then release the buttons. After that press the on / off mode button again to turn it off. Then turn it back on.

The way to know that you’ve reset is it will show this ‘–’ on the LCD display. If you don’t see this after about 10 seconds release buttons, and re-hold them down again.

How to Reset Braeburn Thermostat

Braeburn are a US based company that makes a suite of air conditioning/heat pump control mechanisms, and parts for air conditioning systems. If your Braeburn thermostat is having problems and you need to reset, here’s what to do.

Turn your Braeburn thermostat off. If it has batteries, remove them, and then press the reset button on the front of your thermostat. Put the batteries back in, and turn your Braeburn thermostat back on, and that will have reset your Braeburn thermostat.
