HP Printer Not Working

Whether you are getting a new craft ready for your classroom or are printing your presentation for a boardroom, when using an HP printer, you want to be able to trust that the device will work. If you have an HP Printer and it isn’t working, how can such a problem be fixed?

If your HP printer isn’t working, reset the printer by unplugging it from power for a few minutes, confirm that the printer is on and is connected to a network, complete a clean install of the printer’s software, and uninstall the printer drivers to be replaced with Windows built-in drivers.

Printers’ relevance can oftentimes be long forgotten, as so much is done electronically anymore that such a piece of equipment is only used for very specific instances. Even though this use may be sparse for some people, when you are in need of a printed copy of something, the last thing anyone wants to deal with is a printer that will not work as it should, no matter how long it’s been. If you have an HP printer and it is not working, read below to find the right fix for you.

HP Printer Not Working

When using an HP printer, the process should be relatively simple once you find the item you need printed. By selecting the option to print, selecting the specific HP printer within your direct vicinity, and clicking on the option to print at that location, you should almost immediately hear the printer cranking out your piece or pieces. However, if you go to use this device and notice that it is not working, you may be wondering what the most common fix is, which is below.

If your HP printer isn’t working, try resetting the device. To do this, unplug your printer directly from its power source and allow it to sit without power for a few minutes. Once this time has passed, plug the device back in and power it back on to see if function has been restored.

HP Printer Not Available

As previously mentioned, when using an HP printer, you will be met with the option to choose the printer you are wanting to print from, which will display all printers within your immediate area. When this happens, you should be able to select the HP printer as your first choice for printing, which should then send the device into action. However, if you go to print something and notice that the HP printer is not available, what might the problem be?

If your HP printer is not available, check to make sure that the device is turned on and is not in sleep mode. Once this has been confirmed, be sure that the printer is connected to a network if using a wireless model, which will be indicated by a light next to the wireless button on your printer.

If you see that there is a light next to the wireless icon on the printer but it is blinking or is not on, this means that connection has been lost and the device needs to be reconnected. If this is the case, this is the cause of your issue with not being able to connect to that specific printer.

HP Printer Driver Not Available

At first glance, a printer may seem relatively simplistic, as its primary function is to copy content and print it out within a matter of seconds. However, during this short amount of time, this device is doing an incredible amount of translating in order to receive the message sent to it and interpret it in a way that gives proper results, which all happens through the printer driver. If you have an HP printer and the printer driver isn’t available, what might be the cause?

If your HP printer driver is not available, uninstall the printer drivers and then replace them through the installation of Windows built-in drivers. To do this, connect your PC and printer through a USB cable, allow the drivers to install, then go to ‘Control Panel’ > ‘Devices and Printers’ > then select the printer as default.

HP Printer Not Feeding Paper

Everyone who has ever used a printer knows the dreaded sound of the paper roller spinning within the printer, but no paper being fed into the roller and thus, the printer itself. When this happens, you know that the printer has received the proper message to bring printing, but in order to print the material, paper must be able to be fed into the device. If you have an HP printer and paper is not feeding into the device, take a look below to see what can be done.

If your HP printer isn’t feeding paper, one of the most common problems is that the paper simply isn’t engaged with the feed roller properly. For most users, the most immediate fix to this is to push the paper to the very back of the tray where contact can be made with the rollers.

HP Printer Not Recognizing Ink Cartridge

Color printer ink catridges

You might not be having a problem with paper being fed to your HP printer, but if your printer begins a job and then indicates that it does not recognize the ink cartridge, actual printing will occur. This most often happens when the printer has just been set up or the ink cartridge has been replaced once the ink in the previous cartridge has run out. If you have an HP printer and it won’t recognize the ink cartridge, read on to see what the fix entails.

If your HP printer isn’t recognizing the ink cartridge, try resetting this cartridge. To do this, remove the new ink cartridge and replace it with the old one. Allow the old cartridge to sit for 10 minutes, then reinsert the new cartridge to see if the printer is able to recognize the cartridge.

If you are still having problems with the ink cartridge being recognized after you have completed this troubleshooting method, be sure that you have the cartridge properly inserted. If the cartridge is not evenly placed and secured into the proper position, your printer will not recognize that the cartridge is present, which will result in your printer trying to print while no ink is being transferred to the page bring printed.

HP Printer Not Scanning

For most HP printers, owners have the ability to take various items and scan them to print more copies of the same material or use the scanning option to get files digitally downloaded to their computer or phone to be sent off. This function is incredibly convenient when it comes to digitizing different materials, which makes it just as inconvenient when the function stops working. If your HP printer isn’t scanning, read on to find what can be done.

If your HP printer isn’t scanning, be sure that the scanner is enabled. To confirm this, open HP Printer Assistant, and from the ‘Start’ menu, select ‘All Apps’ > ‘HP’ > then select the name of your printer. Go then to ‘Scan’ > ‘Manage Scan to Computer’ > then choose the option to ‘Enable.’

HP Printer Will Not Copy

As previously discussed, one of the primary functions of the scanner on an HP printer is to be able to copy material so multiple items can be reproduced in an exact copy. To make this happen, the scanner must be enabled (see the previous section titled “HP Printer Not Scanning”), but what do you do if your device is enabled and it still will not copy? If your HP printer will not copy and you have enabled the scanner, read on to find the fix.

If your HP printer will not copy and the scanner has been enabled, try updating the firmware on the printer. To do this, press the ePrint button or icon on the printer, find ‘Settings’ or ‘Setup,’ then choose the option to update the firmware on your printer.

HP Printer Says Offline But It’s Not

Printers are devices that only work if they are being relayed the proper message and can interpret those messages in a way that results in action from the device. This may seem like a simplistic process, but the inner workings of this commutation are rather intricate, which means there is a good amount of room for error if something gets out of place. If you have an HP printer that says it is offline but you know a connection is present, how can this be fixed?

If you have an HP printer that says it’s offline but it’s not, it could be that the communication between the printer and your PC has been disrupted. To reestablish this communication, select ‘Start’ on the printer and go to > ‘Settings’ > ‘Devices’ > ‘Printers and Scanners’ > select your specific printer > ‘Open Queue’ > and confirm that ‘Use Printer Offline’ has not been enabled.

HP Printer Scan To Email Not Working

Finger pressing printer buttons

Just as you can use an HP printer to scan documents so they can be copied and printed, one of the most widely used and beneficial features of a scanner is the ability to scan any document directly into your email. This allows users to get documents out at a faster rate without having to jump over a heap of red tape to get the document saved, found, attached, and then sent. However, if your HP printer scan to email feature isn’t working, a fix is in order.

If your HP printer scan to email isn’t working, a hard reset may be the fix. To do this, unplug the device directly from its power source and remove the USB cable. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds and wait for another 2-3 minutes before plugging the device back in.

HP Printer Screen Not Working

Black printer console

You may be able to use your HP printer normally, but when it comes to a screen that does not work, it can be relatively frustrating to not have an idea of what is going on with your device. The screen on a printer allows owners to follow the progress of different actions, read off any issues that can be notified with text, and allows you to access different functions within the device if changes need to be made. If the screen isn’t working on your HP printer, read on.

If your HP printer screen isn’t working, try turning the printer off and back on again to complete a quick reset. If this does not work and you are using any kind of extension cord to run your printer, unplug the device and then plug it in directly to a power outlet to see if the problem persists.

If you are still having trouble with the screen not working, it could be that the printer needs to be formally reset through a power reset. To do this, unplug the printer directly from its power source and allow it to sit for 60 seconds and once this time has passed, you can plug the printer back in and allow the device to reboot after turning it back on. Once you turn the printer on after a power reset, you should be able to see the display screen without a problem.
